Player Outlook
A first-round pick by the crosstown White Sox back in 2018, Nick Madrigal is still looking for a true breakout campaign in his third season with the Cubs. The infielder has the contact skills and speed to make an impact, though health has been his biggest challenge to this point in his career. Madrigal missed time in 2023 due to a hamstring injury, and he dealt with back and groin ailments a year earlier. As a result, he's played in only 151 total games at the MLB level the last two seasons. On a more positive note, the 92 games he played in last year represent a new career high. Madrigal also set a new career best by recording 270 at-bats. He batted .263 and chipped in two home runs along with 10 stolen bases in 12 attempts. Madrigal will be entering his age-27 season in 2024, and if he can stay on the field, he may be Chicago's primary third baseman. Veteran Patrick Wisdom is still around, and he offers plenty of pop, but Madrigal is the better pure hitter. He could be a sneaky fantasy option this year if the playing time is there.

  • Cubs' Nick Madrigal: On bench for third straight

Madrigal is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rockies. Madrigal is on the bench for the third consecutive game, with two of his absences from the lineup coming against right-handed pitchers and one coming versus a lefty. After drawing the Opening Day nod at third base and going 1-for-3 with a double in a 4-3 loss to the Rangers, Madrigal has since ceded the hot corner to Christopher Morel. Morel had been expected to see most of his starts at designated hitter this season, but the Cubs now appear inclined to take a rotational approach to that spot in the lineup while lefty-hitting outfielder Mike Tauchman essentially replaces Madrigal when Chicago faces right-handed pitching.

The Cubs transferred Madrigal (hamstring) from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Sunday, Meghan Montemurro of the Chicago Tribune reports. After Chicago was officially eliminated from playoff contention Saturday, the team made a slew of roster moves ahead of Sunday's season finale versus the Brewers. Madrigal and Michael Fulmer (forearm) were both transferred to the 60-day IL for procedural reasons, as the moves opened up spots on the 40-man roster for relievers Shane Greene and Tyler Duffey. Madrigal will be activated and added back to the 40-man roster over the offseason and should be fully recovered from his right hamstring strain well in advance of spring training.
