Player Outlook
Kody Clemens hit .145/.197/.308 for the struggling Tigers as a 26-year-old rookie in 2022, so it was something of a surprise that the defending National League champions elected to acquire him in January. He didn't make the Phillies' Opening Day roster but was called up just a week into the season after Darick Hall suffered a thumb injury. Clemens spent the bulk of the first half on the large side of a platoon at first base, but his .230/.277/.367 slash line and 73 wRC+ better suited a backup catcher than a regular at a corner position. Unsurprisingly, he found himself optioned in early July and never returned to the majors. Clemens' .256/.373/.56 slash line with 18 homers in 62 Triple-A games indicates he has little left to prove in the minors, but a strong Triple-A showing from a 27-year-old shouldn't be taken to mean that a big-league breakout is on the horizon. Clemens has shown poor plate discipline in 106 career MLB games, combining a 26.5 K% with a 5.8 BB%, and he hasn't made much quality contact, posting a 5.9% barrel rate.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Sent to minor-league camp

The Phillies optioned Clemens to minor-league camp Sunday, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. The 27-year-old was in the running for a bench spot on Philadelphia's Opening Day roster, but he'll end up missing out despite posting a 1.244 OPS during spring training. Clemens should receive a look with the Phillies at some point in 2024, but he'll begin the campaign back at Triple-A Lehigh Valley.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Scratched due to illness

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Bound for minors

The Phillies optioned Clemens to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday. Clemens had been handling a strong-side platoon role in the corner infield for the past six weeks, but after falling into a 5-for-39 slump at the plate over his past 13 games, he'll lose his spot on the 26-man active roster. In a corresponding move, the Phillies recalled first baseman/designated hitter Darick Hall from Triple-A.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Sitting Saturday

Clemens will sit Saturday against the Nationals. Clemens hits the bench against lefty MacKenzie Gore. Outside of a four-game stretch in the first half of June, Clemens has sat against every lefty the Phillies have faced this season. Even while getting the platoon advantage in the vast majority of his at-bats, the 27-year-old first baseman is hitting just .232/.279/.370. Alec Bohm slides to first base Saturday, with Edmundo Sosa starting at the hot corner.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Not in lineup Wednesday

Clemens is absent from the lineup Wednesday against the Cubs. Chicago is throwing left-hander Drew Smyly, so Alec Bohm will cover first base and bat sixth with Edmundo Sosa handling third base and hitting eighth. Clemens is 3-for-19 with zero extra-base hits in limited action this year versus southpaws.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Out of Sunday's lineup

Clemens is not in the lineup for Sunday's game against the Mets. Clemens has one hit in his past 21 at-bats and will take a seat Sunday for the second time in Philadelphia's past three games. Alec Bohm will shift to first base while Edmundo Sosa starts at the hot corner.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Sitting against southpaw

Clemens isn't in the Phillies' lineup Friday against the Athletics. Lefty JP Sears will start on the mound Friday for Oakland, meaning the lefty-hitting Clemens will begin the game in the dugout. Alec Bohm will take over at first base, allowing Edmundo Sosa to start at third and bat eighth.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Two hits, walk-off winner

Clemens went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Thursday's 3-2 victory over the Tigers. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Clemens lined a base hit off Alex Lange to give the Phillies a walk-off win. The 27-year-old Clemens has filled in nicely at first base for Alec Bohm (hamstring), going 15-for-46 (.326) over his last 14 games. He's now slashing .267/.320/.433 with four homers, 13 runs scored and 11 RBI through 97 plate appearances.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Picking up reps at first base

Clemens will start at first base and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Mets. The 27-year-old will make his fourth straight start and appears to have temporarily supplanted Edmundo Sosa as a regular in the Philadelphia infield, at least versus right-handed pitching. Clemens has maintained a .308/.372/.462 slash line throughout May heading into the Phillies' final game of the month.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: On bench for second straight game

Clemens is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers. Before taking a seat for Tuesday's 13-1 loss, Clemens had started in three consecutive games at either first base or designated hitter, going 2-for-11 with a pair of home runs and a walk. With Bryce Harper (elbow) returning from the 10-day injured list Tuesday and set to serve as the Phillies' full-time designated hitter moving forward, Clemens doesn't look like he'll have a path to playing on a regular basis.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Getting more work versus righties

Clemens will serve as the Phillies' designated hitter and No. 8 batter in Sunday's game against the Astros. Clemens has now started against four of the last five right-handed pitchers the Phillies have faced, and he at least temporarily appears to have secured the final spot in the team's regular lineup over the struggling Jake Cave. For the season, Clemens has cobbled together an unimpressive .160/.222/.400 slash line in 27 plate appearances, and he'll be a prime candidate to see his opportunities fall by the wayside as soon as Bryce Harper (elbow) is cleared to return from the 10-day injured list.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Out of Saturday's lineup

Clemens is not in the lineup for Saturday's game versus the Reds. Clemens was called up Friday and went 0-for-2 with a walk against Cincinnati in his season debut. The 26-year-old is expected to serve as the Phillies' regular first baseman against right-handed pitchers, but he's on the bench Saturday with lefty Nick Lodolo on the bump for the Reds. Alec Bohm will shift to first base while Edmundo Sosa starts at the hot corner.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Recalled from Triple-A

Clemens was recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley by the Phillies on Friday. He's replacing Darick Hall (thumb) on the roster and could see a decent amount of playing time with the Phillies' corner infield depth being tested. Clemens struggled mightily with the Tigers last season, posting a .505 OPS over 56 games.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Expected to be promoted

Clemens is expected to be recalled by the Phillies, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. It could mean bad news for Darick Hall (thumb), who was injured during Wednesday's game. Clemens was acquired along with Gregory Soto from the Tigers in a January trade. Roger's son is capable of playing all over the infield and the corner outfield spots.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Bound for Triple-A

The Phillies optioned Clemens to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday. Clemens and Scott Kingery were among the players Philadelphia sent to minor-league camp in the latest round of roster cuts, moves that likely ensure that Dalton Guthrie and Jake Cave have claimed the final bench spots on the team's Opening Day squad. After being acquired from the Tigers this offseason in a five-layer deal, Clemens made a big impression in his first spring with the Phillies, producing a 1.002 OPS while stealing three bases over 19 games. His ability to play multiple spots in the infield as well as both corner-outfield spots should put him near the top of the list for a call-up if the Phillies' position-player depth is tested at any point.

  • Phillies' Kody Clemens: Heads to Philadelphia

Clemens and Gregory Soto were traded from Detroit to Philadelphia on Saturday in exchange for Nick Maton, Matt Vierling and Donny Sands, Jon Morosi of MLB Network reports. Clemens debuted as a 26-year-old last season but struggled significantly in 57 games, hitting just .145/.197/.308. A .148 BABIP undoubtedly accounts for some of his struggles, but his .193 xBA suggests his quality of contact was very poor. It's tough to see him earning significant at-bats on a contender like the Phillies, and he'll need a big step forward to deserve even a bench role.
