Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Fans seven in spot start
Mathews completed four innings in Game 1 of Monday's doubleheader against Cincinnati, allowing one run on two hits and three walks while striking out seven batters in a no-decision.
Mathews was called up from Triple-A Memphis early Monday and handed the ball for the matinee. The southpaw held his own, allowing just one run on a fourth-inning solo homer by Dane Myers. Mathews racked up 12 whiffs and seven punchouts, though he was a bit wild and needed 95 pitches (55 strikes) to complete only four frames. It was just the second appearance of the 25-year-old's big-league career; in his MLB debut Aug. 1 in Toronto, Mathews yielded three runs over five innings in a loss. Unless St. Louis opts to shift to a six-man rotation, there doesn't seem to be room for Mathews to remain with the big-league club as a starter for now, but he'd likely be a top candidate to move into the rotation should any of the Cardinals' other starters suffer an injury or get demoted.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Added to roster ahead of spot start
The Cardinals recalled Mathews from Triple-A Memphis on Monday.
Mathews will start the first game of Monday's doubleheader in Cincinnati versus the Reds. He'll be making his second MLB start, after yielding two runs with a 3:3 K:BB over five innings in his debut in Toronto earlier this month. In 21 starts for Memphis this season, Mathews has collected a 3.27 ERA and 120:61 K:BB across 99 innings. He will likely be sent back down following Monday's spot start.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Returning to start Monday
The Cardinals will recall Mathews from Triple-A Memphis to start the first game of Monday's doubleheader with the Reds in Cincinnati, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Mathews will make his second career big-league start after he tossed five innings and allowed two runs on six hits and three walks while striking out three batters in his major-league debut Aug 1. versus Toronto. The southpaw has produced a 3.27 ERA and 1.23 WHIP with 120 punchouts over 99 innings in 21 starts with Memphis this season.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Sent back to Memphis
The Cardinals optioned Mathews to Triple-A Memphis on Tuesday.
Mathews had a decent major-league debut last week in Toronto, allowing two runs with a 3:3 K:BB over five innings. With Hunter Dobbins replacing Dustin May in the Cardinals' rotation, Mathews will head back to Memphis for the time being. However, he is a good bet to make additional starts down the stretch for the big club.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Solid in MLB debut
Mathews (0-1) took the loss Saturday as the Cardinals fell 5-1 to the Blue Jays, allowing two runs on six hits and three walks over five-plus innings. He struck out three.
In his big-league debut, Mathews kept things close but got little help from his offense, tossing 63 of 97 pitches for strikes and getting pulled after giving up a bunt single to Daulton Varsho to lead off the sixth. The Cards have yet to confirm whether the 25-year-old southpaw will stick around in the rotation, but with Dustin May likely to be moved by Monday's trade deadline, a permanent spot could be about to open up. If he stays on turn, Mathews lines up to make his next start at home next weekend against the Rockies.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Promoted ahead of start
The Cardinals selected Mathews' contract from Triple-A Memphis on Saturday.
After posting a 3.13 ERA and 1.14 WHIP through 92 innings at Memphis, Mathews will make his MLB debut Saturday against a Blue Jays lineup that's put up just a .642 OPS since the All-Star break. His promotion gives the Cardinals six starters in their rotation, though the 25-year-old could claim a permanent spot with the big club if St. Louis trades away another starter before the deadline Monday. Matt Svanson was optioned to Triple-A Memphis to make room for Mathews on the active roster, and Tink Hence was DFA'd to clear a 40-man spot.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Making MLB debut Saturday
Matthews will be called up from Triple-A Memphis to start Saturday against the Blue Jays for his MLB debut, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports.
Matthews was removed as the probable pitcher for Memphis on Thursday, which hinted at his promotion. He has been stellar in Triple-A since the start of June with a 1.55 ERA across 52.1 innings. The left-hander is joining the big club as a sixth starter for now, but a full-time rotation spot could open soon if Dustin May is traded ahead of Monday's deadline.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Joining big-league rotation soon?
Mathews is no longer listed among the upcoming probable pitchers at Triple-A Memphis and could join the Cardinals' rotation soon, Jeff Jones of the Belleville News-Democrat reports.
Mathews had been scheduled to start Thursday, but now he's not listed among Memphis' probables through Sunday. The left-hander could enter the Cardinals' rotation as soon as this weekend in Toronto, taking the spot of Dustin May, who is expected to be traded before Monday's deadline. Mathews has been on a roll at Memphis, authoring a 1.55 ERA and 59:19 K:BB over 52.1 innings since the beginning of June.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Surging at Triple-A
Mathews continued a terrific stretch at Triple-A Memphis with seven strikeouts over seven shutout innings in Thursday's start versus Gwinnett.
Mathews had an up-and-down first two months of the season but has been on a roll since the start of June, posting a 1.83 ERA, 0.79 WHIP and 45:15 K:BB over 39.1 frames covering seven starts. His 10.3 percent walk rate during that span remains a tad high, but it's greatly improved from the 18.2 percent mark he had in his first 10 outings. Mathews is not on the Cardinals' 40-man roster, but he looks ready for a chance at the big-league level sooner rather than later.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Authors best start of season
Mathews struck out nine while yielding just one hit and one walk over six shutout innings in a start for Triple-A Memphis on Thursday.
It's the best start of the season for Mathews, who faced just one over the minimum and induced 16 whiffs on 80 pitches. Mathews' major control problems have persisted this season at Memphis with a 17 percent walk rate, but he's also sporting a 30.5 percent strikeout rate and has been able to hold his velocity deep into outings. He could reach St. Louis at some point in the second half if he can get the walks down to an acceptable level.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Reassigned to minors camp
The Cardinals reassigned Mathews to minor-league camp Monday.
Mathews showed encouraging signs in his last Grapefruit League appearance in racking up seven strikeouts over 2.2 innings, but he was always destined to open the season in the rotation at Triple-A Memphis. The southpaw will be seeking a bounce-back year after he stumbled in 2025 with a 3.93 ERA and 107:74 K:BB over 94 innings with Memphis.

Cardinals' Quinn Mathews: Sharp in third spring outing
Mathews allowed two runs (one earned) on two hits while striking out seven over 2.2 frames in Thursday's Grapefruit League appearance against the Pirates.
Mathews served up a home run in his final inning of work after Nolan Gorman had committed an error. The lefty's outing was very encouraging on the whole, though. Mathews averaged 95.2 mph with his four-seamer, induced 12 whiffs on 50 pitches and didn't issue a walk to go along with his seven punchouts. The lefty had been shaky in his first two appearances of the spring, so this was a nice step in the right direction. Mathews is slated to open 2026 in the Triple-A Memphis rotation.
