Player Outlook
Darick Hall showed flashes as a 26-year-old rookie in 2022, posting a 121 wRC+ in 42 games, so when Rhys Hoskins suffered a season-ended ACL tear in March, an opportunity was available for Hall to establish himself as a major-league regular. His season statistics demonstrate emphatically that he failed to do so, as he hit .167/.196/.241 while appearing in just 18 games. Those who took note of the horrible plate discipline (3.5% walk rate, 31.0% strikeout rate) that accompanied his rookie numbers won't have been too surprised, however, though that wasn't the entire reason he failed to get off the ground in 2023. He earned an Opening Day starting role despite those plate discipline worries, and it wasn't a slump but rather a sprained thumb suffered in early April which cut his starting job short. By the time he recovered from surgery, Bryce Harper had made his miraculous return. Hall did himself no favors with a three-week cameo in July, striking out over 40% of the time, and he never got another chance.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Optioned to Triple-A

Hall was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. With Bryce Harper making his first start at first base Friday and Kyle Schwarber being used at designated hitter, Hall is headed back to the minors. He has just a .437 OPS at the big-league level this season.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Exits starting nine

Hall is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Brewers. The lefty-hitting Hall sat out both ends of a doubleheader last weekend when the Padres brought a pair of lefty starters to the hill, but he had manned first base in both of the Phillies' last two games against right-handed pitchers. However, Hall will find himself on the bench Wednesday versus righty Colin Rea, allowing Edmundo Sosa to crack the lineup at third base while Alec Bohm shifts over to first.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Sitting nightcap versus lefty

Hall isn't in the Phillies' lineup for Game 2 of Saturday's doubleheader against San Diego, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Left-hander Ryan Weathers will start Game 2 on the mound for San Diego, so the left-handed bat of Hall will stay put in Philly's dugout. Alec Bohm will take over at first base, allowing Edmundo Sosa to start at third and bat seventh.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: On bench against lefty

Hall will sit for the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Padres. The Phillies will rest a handful of lefties against Blake Snell, though the Padres are starting a second southpaw (Ryan Weathers) in the nightcap, so Hall could see himself stuck on the bench all day. Drew Ellis starts at first base in the afternoon game.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: On bench versus southpaw

Hall is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Marlins. Hall will hit the bench Sunday for the second straight game with lefty Jesus Luzardo pitching for Miami. Alec Bohm is covering first base while Edmundo Sosa starts at the hot corner.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Hits first homer of 2023

Hall went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's win over the Rays. After going homerless in his first nine MLB games this season, Hall finally got on the board with a 398-foot moonshot off Jake Diekman in the fifth frame. After missing nearly two months with a thumb injury, Hall was called back up to the big league roster July 2 and has been acting as the Phillies' starting first baseman. Since the promotion, Hall is batting 3-for-16 (.187) with the solo homer and an additional RBI.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Rejoins parent club

The Phillies recalled Hall from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday. He'll start at first base and bat eighth in the Phillies' series finale with the Nationals, Todd Zolecki of MLB.com reports. Hall missed approximately two months earlier this season while recovering from a torn ligament in his thumb, but he was activated from the injured list in early June and was simultaneously optioned to Triple-A. After slashing an impressive .325/.406/.537 at Lehigh Valley over the past month, Hall will move back to the big leagues and is expected to get a look in a strong-side platoon role at first base. He'll be replacing Kody Clemens, who was optioned to Lehigh Valley after falling into a 5-for-39 drought at the plate over his last 13 games.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Reinstated, optioned to Triple-A

Hall (thumb) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Monday. Hall will return to the 40-man roster for the first time since he suffered a torn ligament in his right thumb in early April. The 27-year-old went 13-for-51 with six extra-base hits, including two homers, and 10 RBI over 13 games with Triple-A Lehigh Valley during his rehab assignment and he'll look to remain hot moving forward. Over 42 games with the Phillies in 2022, Hall produced a .250 average with nine homers, 16 RBI and 19 runs scored. With Bryce Harper holding down the designated hitter role in 2023, if Hall were to get called up, he'd likely operate in a platoon with Kody Clemens at first base. In a corresponding move, Dalton Guthrie was designated for assignment Monday.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Rehab moved to Triple-A

Hall (thumb) had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Friday. Hall played two games for Single-A Clearwater, going 3-for-8 with a double and a walk. He's eligible to return from the 60-day injured list June 5, but it's possible the Phillies keep him in Triple-A past that date to ensure he completely shakes off any rust. Hall has been sidelined with a torn ligament in his right thumb since April 5, but he figures to immediately slot back into the starting lineup at first base when he returns with Alec Bohm (hamstring) now sidelined as well.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Cleared for rehab games

Hall (thumb) is beginning a rehab assignment Tuesday with Single-A Clearwater. Hall will likely require a significant number of tuneup at-bats in the minors given that he's been sidelined since the first week of April because of a torn ligament in his right thumb. However, he's been cleared again for live competition and is about ready to offer the Phillies much-needed help at first base. Hall is first eligible to be activated from the 60-day injured list June 5.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Tuesday's Waiver Wire Targets

Coming back from surgery to repair a torn ligament in his thumb, Hall looks close to beginning a minor-league rehab assignment. That means he could be back from the IL within the next couple of weeks, and he's worth a look if you've got an IL spot to play with. He didn't do much before suffering the injury, but he hit nine homers with a .250 average in 41 games last season. I have my concerns about whether he'll be able to hit lefties at all – he had a .556 OPS and struck out 28% of the time against them in 2022, including the minors – but he's going to get an opportunity to hit in the heart of that Phillies lineup and could be a very good source of power if he proves last season wasn't a fluke.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Nearing rehab games

Hall (thumb) could start a rehab assignment early next week, Corey Seidman of NBC Sports Philadelphia reports. Hall has passed all of the necessary tests in his recovery from April 12 surgery to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb. He's on the 60-day injured list but can be activated by the Phillies as early as June 5. Kody Clemens and Alec Bohm are currently sharing starts at first base for the reigning NL champs. Clemens has been swinging a hot bat lately but would probably be at the biggest risk of losing playing time upon Hall's return.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Closing in on rehab assignment

Phillies manager Rob Thomson told reporters before Friday's game against the Cubs that Hall (thumb) is getting close to starting a rehab assignment, Alex Coffey of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Thomson notes that Hall hasn't hit live pitching yet, but he is hitting on the field and hitting off HitTrax while also taking groundballs, running and throwing. The first baseman is on the 60-day injured list and is not eligible to return to the Phillies until the early portion of June, but a rehab assignment in the next week or so could put him on track to do just that.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Removed from 40-man roster

Hall (thumb) was transferred from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day injured list by the Phillies on Saturday. The move opens up a spot on the 40-man roster for Dylan Covey, with Covey being claimed by the Phillies on Saturday off waivers from the Dodgers. Hall is currently out of action after undergoing surgery on a torn ligament in his thumb, and he'll be out until at least the middle of June while he recovers.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Out two months after surgery

Hall underwent surgery Wednesday to repair the UCL in his right thumb and is expected to remain out for two months. The timetable provided by the Phillies is an approximation but offers a general idea of when Hall might be back in action. Kody Clemens and Alec Bohm have been handling first base in Hall's absence and should continue to receive the bulk of the starts at the position over the next two months. Edmundo Sosa should also see extra opportunities to cover third base on the occasions Bohm is manning first base.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Needs thumb surgery

Hall will undergo surgery next week to repair a torn ligament in his right thumb, Scott Lauber of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Hall said he expects to return at some point later this season, but a clearer timetable should be made available after the procedure. It's a major blow to a Phillies team which has already lost Rhys Hoskins (knee) for the season. Kody Clemens is starting at first base Friday and is expected to play there regularly versus righties, with Alec Bohm possible shifting over against lefties. The Phils might also have no choice at this point but to look for help outside the organization.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Lands on injured list

Hall was placed on the 10-day injured list by the Phillies on Friday, retroactive to April 6, with a right thumb sprain. Hall injured his thumb on a slide into second base during Wednesday's game versus the Yankees. It's not clear at this point how long he might be out, but the fact that the Phillies are classifying it as a sprain suggests it could be a multi-week absence. Alec Bohm figures to see a lot of starts at first base while Hall is sidelined, with Edmundo Sosa, Josh Harrison and Kody Clemens picking up more playing time at third base.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: IL stint coming?

Hall (thumb) could be placed on the injured list, Jon Heyman of the New York Post reports. Heyman reported that Kody Clemens will be added to the active roster and references the injury to Hall. While it doesn't explicitly say Hall is indeed bound for the IL, it would seem to point in that direction. Hall injured his right thumb on a slide in Wednesday's game versus the Yankees and had been set to be re-evaluated. Edmundo Sosa, Josh Harrison and Clemens would figure to see a boost in playing time if Hall does indeed need to miss some time.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Leaves game with thumb injury

Hall was removed from Wednesday's game versus the Yankees with an apparent right thumb injury, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports. Hall appeared to hurt his thumb on a slide at second base in the fourth inning while trying to stretch a single to a double. He remained in the game initially but was lifted in the fifth. More should be known about Hall's condition after the game.

  • Phillies' Darick Hall: Sitting versus lefty

Hall is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Rangers. Hall started at first base in the first two games of the season and went 2-for-7 with a double, a walk and a run scored, but he'll head to the bench Sunday with southpaw Martin Perez pitching for Texas. Alec Bohm will slide over to first base while Edmundo Sosa starts at the hot corner.
