  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Should be swinging bat this spring

Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow said Monday that Yoshida (shoulder) is "making a ton of progress" and should be swinging a bat during spring training, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports.

Yoshida underwent surgery in early October to repair a labral tear in his right shoulder. He's expected to be ready for Opening Day if all goes well during his rehab, and it sounds like he's checked off the necessary boxes thus far. Yoshida's name has come up in trade rumors this offseason, and while it appears the Red Sox would be happy to get out from under the $55.8 million he's still owed, they haven't been able to find any takers so far.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Undergoes shoulder surgery

Yoshida underwent surgery Oct. 3 to repair a labral tear in his right shoulder, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports.

The hope is that Yoshida will be ready in time for Opening Day, although it's not clear how limited, if at all, he will be during spring training. Yoshida slashed .280/.349/.415 with 10 home runs over 108 games for Boston this season as its full-time designated hitter.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: May have shoulder surgery

Yoshida may have right shoulder surgery soon, Carlos Yamazaki of Tokyo Sports Press reports.

Yoshida also expressed frustration about not getting enough at-bats and being a full-time designated hitter this year, per Chris Ryan of New Hampshire Today. The 31-year-old slashed .280/.349/.415 with 10 home runs, 45 runs, 56 RBI and two steals in 108 games this year. He will be UT-only next year in fantasy in the vast majority of formats after getting just one start in the outfield.

Yoshida is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against Tampa Bay, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports.

Mickey Gasper will serve as the designated hitter and bat eighth in the Red Sox's regular-season finale. Barring a pinch-hit appearance, Yoshida will end his second season in Boston having slashed .280/.349/.415 with 10 home runs and 56 RBI across 421 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Taking seat Monday

Yoshida is not in the lineup for Monday's contest in Toronto.

Tyler O'Neill (back) is being eased back into the lineup at designated hitter after sitting out the Red Sox's last two games, so Yoshida will take a seat. Yoshida is on the bench for the second time over the last four games, with both absences coming versus right-handed pitching.

  • Red Sox's Masataka Yoshida: Sitting against righty

Yoshida is absent from the lineup for Friday's game against the Twins.

The Twins are starting a right-hander in David Festa, but the left-handed-hitting Yoshida will nonetheless begin this one on the bench. After an excellent July and August, Yoshida is slashing just .231/.286/.365 so far in September. Tyler O'Neill will be Boston's designated hitter Friday.
