Player Outlook
Blake Sabol went from the Pirates to the Reds to the Giants during Rule 5 Draft day in December of 2022, ultimately landing in a place where his ability to both catch and play the outfield could be put to great use. He made 46 starts behind the plate, essentially subbing in for Joey Bart and Patrick Bailey, and he also made 32 starts in left field as the San Francisco outfield depth chart fell into disarray. In the end, though, Sabol did not show enough offensively to carve out an increased role for 2024. Bailey is still around, as his newcomer at catcher Tom Murphy, and the blockbuster addition of Korean center fielder Jung Hoo Lee leaves the Giants with too many outfield mouths to feed. Sabol can mostly be ignored in standard fantasy leagues as he enters his age-26 campaign.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Optioned to Triple-A

The Giants optioned Sabol to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Sabol's chances at making the Opening Day roster as a third catcher were already low, and he'll officially head back to the minors to begin 2024 after slashing .211/.333/.263 across 24 plate appearances during spring training. The 26-year-old backstop posted a .969 OPS during his last Triple-A stint in 2022, and he may be able to hit his way back into San Francisco if he performs at that level in 2024.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Back in action Wednesday

Sabol (groin) will return to action Wednesday for the Giants' Cactus League contest against the Angels, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Sabol is not in the lineup but will come off the bench and play some left field. It will be the 26-year-old's first game appearance since March 5, as he's been plagued by a right adductor strain. Sabol should be ready in time for Opening Day but appears ticketed for Triple-A Sacramento to start the season.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Beginning baseball activities

Sabol (groin) will begin baseball activities and a running progression Friday, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Sabol suffered a right adductor strain earlier this month but has been cleared to being ramping things back up. A timeline for his return to game action isn't clear, but it would seem a stint on the injured list to start the season could be in the cards.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Scheduled for MRI

Sabol pulled his groin adductor during the Giants' spring training game against Milwaukee on Tuesday, Andrew Baggarly of The Athletic reports. Sabol sustained the injury while attempting to beat out an infield single. He will use the Giants' day off Wednesday to receive an MRI, which should offer more clarity on the severity of his injury and how long he may be out for.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Could get looks at first base

Sabol will likely get a look at first base in spring training, Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area reports. Sabol, a natural catcher, is behind at least Patrick Bailey and Tom Murphy at that position. He also saw time in left field last season, but manager Bob Melvin wants to add more versatility to Sabol's profile. The 26-year-old had to stay on the major-league roster all of last season after being acquired in the Rule 5 draft from the Reds, but Sabol will be able to be optioned to the minors if he can't carve out at least a utility role in 2024.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Swats 12th homer

Sabol went 1-for-3 with a two-run home run in Friday's 9-8 win over the Rockies. Playing time has been fairly sparse for Sabol lately, but he's gone 7-for-23 (.304) across his last eight contests. His homer Friday was his 12th of the season, but his first since July 19. The rookie catcher/outfielder is at a .245/.304/.404 slash line with 40 RBI, 34 runs scored, two stolen bases and nine doubles through 97 contests. Sabol and Joey Bart will likely split time behind the plate while Patrick Bailey (concussion) is out -- Bart has drawn the start at catcher in two of the three games Bailey's missed so far.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Heads to bench Sunday

Sabol is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against Atlanta. Sabol had started at either catcher or in left field in five of the past six games, but he'll join several of the Giants' left-handed hitters on the bench Sunday while Atlanta brings southpaw Max Fried to the hill. Though he's continued to receive fairly steady playing time of late, Sabol has mustered a lowly .483 OPS while striking out at a 43.5 percent clip since the All-Star break.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Goes deep twice in loss

Sabol went 2-for-4 with two home runs and five RBI in Monday's 6-5 loss to the Mariners. Sabol accounted for both of the Giants' run-scoring plays with a two-run blast in the fourth and a three-run homer in the ninth. While they came up a run short, this was still a massive game for Sabol individually, as the five RBI were a career high. The catcher/outfielder is up to 10 long balls, 33 RBI, 27 runs scored, two stolen bases and a .255/.317/.445 slash line through 65 contests. He's hit safely in five straight games, but the returns of Mike Yastrzemski and Michael Conforto from their respective hamstring injuries could make it tougher for Sabol to see time in left field going forward.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Homers off bench

Sabol went 1-for-2 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 8-4 loss to the Mets. Sabol went deep in the seventh inning, but the Giants' comeback effort fell short. He snapped a 20-game homer drought. The 25-year-old has hit safely in four straight games, going 4-for-13 (.308) over that span. For the season, he's slashing .250/.313/.413 with eight homers, 28 RBI, 25 runs scored and two stolen bases over 218 plate appearances. He continues to see regular time between catcher, left field and designated hitter.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Heads to bench Monday

Sabol is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Cardinals, Maria I. Guardado of MLB.com reports. Sabol went 3-for-15 with three walks, two RBI and a run while starting in each of the past five games. Four of those starts came as a catcher, though Sabol's increased usage behind the dish may have been in some part due to the fact that Patrick Bailey had been dealing with neck tightness. Bailey is expected to operate as the Giants' primary backstop for the foreseeable future, but Sabol should still see semi-regular playing time against right-handed pitching while moving between catcher, designated hitter and the corner outfield.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Homers in loss

Sabol went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run in Sunday's 8-3 loss to the Orioles. Sabol went yard in the sixth inning to get the Giants on the board. He's hit safely in five of his last six games, going 7-for-23 (.304) over that stretch. With Joey Bart (groin) expected back soon, Sabol's hot stretch should help him maintain his place on the roster. For the season, the Rule 5 pick has slashed .254/.318/.442 with seven homers, 18 RBI, 17 runs scored and two stolen bases through 151 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Bows out of lineup

Sabol is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Pirates. He'll retreat to the bench as the Giants stock their lineup with eight right-handed options to counter Pirates southpaw Rich Hill. Sabol has been serving as the Giants' primary designated hitter of late, but he'll cede the role to David Villar in the series opener.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Playing regularly

Sabol will start at catcher and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Brewers, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Sabol will step in behind the dish in place of Patrick Bailey, who is resting for the series finale after catching in each of the past three contests. Even though Bailey looks poised to remain the Giants' primary backstop while Joey Bart (groin) is on the shelf, Sabol's ability to fill in at designated hitter or in the corner outfield has allowed him to retain a regular role. The rookie will draw a seventh consecutive start Sunday despite going 2-for-21 with seven strikeouts over the previous six contests.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Knocks three hits

Sabol went 3-for-4 with a double and a run scored in Sunday's 7-3 loss to the Brewers. Sabol appears to be settling in a bit, as he's hit safely in six of his last seven games with three multi-hit efforts in that span. The 25-year-old's playing time has dropped since Joey Bart returned from a groin injury, and Sabol can't be expected to start more than twice a week behind the dish. He's also spent less time in the outfield with Mitch Haniger taking over a starting role in left field. Sabol is slashing .264/.312/.500 with five home runs, two stolen bases, 11 RBI, 10 runs scored and two doubles through 77 plate appearances.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Heads to bench as Bart returns

Sabol is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Sabol hasn't picked up a start in the outfield since April 15, but he's been able to maintain a regular spot in the lineup against right-handed pitching while Joey Bart has missed time of late with a groin injury. However, with Bart back in action Sunday, Sabol's four-game streak of starts behind the dish will come to an end.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Adds steal in win

Sabol went 2-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Wednesday's 7-3 win over the Cardinals. Sabol hit a two-out single in the fourth inning, stole second and scored on an Austin Slater single to tie the game at 2-2. It's been a good stretch of late for Sabol, who has gone 6-for-14 (.429) with two home runs, four RBI, a steal and four runs scored over his last five games. His recent run of playing time behind the dish will likely end when Joey Bart (groin) returns to the lineup.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Goes yard Thursday

Sabol went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Thursday's 9-4 loss to the Mets. Sabol got the Giants on the board with his fifth-inning solo shot. Both of his homers have come in his last three games. The 25-year-old is playing primarily against right-handed pitchers, but his .190/.244/.405 slash line through 45 plate appearances isn't all that inspiring. He's added three homers, five RBI, four runs scored and a stolen base.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Sitting against lefty

Sabol is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Marlins, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The lefty-hitting Sabol will sit for the second time in the series, with both of his absences coming when Miami has brought left-handers Jesus Luzardo and Trevor Rogers to the hill. Joey Bart will handle catching duties Wednesday while Heliot Ramos covers left field in the series finale.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Sitting out versus lefty again

Sabol is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Marlins, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. For the fifth time in seven games, the lefty-hitting Sabol will take a seat while the Giants face off against another southpaw (Jesus Luzardo). The Giants' recent lefty-heavy slate has made it difficult to get a handle on whether Sabol will continue to maintain a strong-side platoon role at either catcher or left field, or if he'll start to lose out on opportunities against right-handed pitching after slashing .194/.256/.361 through the first 12 games of his MLB career.

  • Giants' Blake Sabol: Notches steal in win

Sabol went 1-for-4 with a stolen base in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Dodgers. The steal was Sabol's first at the big-league level. He stole a combined 10 bases between the Double-A and Triple-A circuits last season, so there's at least modest speed in his profile. The 25-year-old catcher/outfielder is slashing .194/.265/.290 with a home run, two RBI and two runs scored through 34 plate appearances. With prospect Heliot Ramos in the majors, Sabol will likely serve as a backup to Joey Bart rather than a starter in left field.
