Player Outlook
An eighth-round selection out of Ohio State in 2019, Dominic Canzone tore up minor-league pitching in his time in the Arizona system, and he was one of the key components of the trade that sent Paul Sewald from the Mariners to the Diamondbacks near the deadline. His time in the majors wasn't nearly as successful with a OPS of .657 with six homers in 59 games at the highest level, but there were enough flashes of success combined with his stats in the minors to believe that there's fantasy upside in his profile. There's well above-average power in his left-handed bat, and he did a good job of making consistent contact with a strikeout rate of just 17.6 percent in his rookie campaign. The 26-year-old didn't show much patience at the plate, however, and well below-average speed means he won't be a stolen-base threat now or going forward. Canzone will have a chance to win a regular spot with the Mariners against right-handed pitching barring a plethora of offseason moves, and a breakout season -- while far from a foregone conclusion -- is well within reach.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Throwing and running

Canzone (shoulder) began a throwing and running program Friday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. General manager Justin Hollander added that the team hopes for Canzone to begin a hitting progression sometime next week, though he is still several weeks out from full baseball activities. The 26-year-old outfielder sprained the AC joint in his left shoulder April 14, and Hollander's comments suggest he is not close to returning anytime soon. Luke Raley and Jonatan Clase should continue splitting time in left field while Canzone works his way back.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: No timeline on return

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Monday that there is no set timeline for Canzone (shoulder), Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Canzone was placed on the 10-day IL on Monday. He sustained a sprained AC joint in his left shoulder Sunday after colliding with the outfield wall. Servais added that Canzone will be down at least a couple of weeks. While Canzone is out, Jonatan Clase will see more starts in left field, beginning Monday against the Reds.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Doesn't have structural damage

Canzone does not have structural damage to his left shoulder and will not require surgery, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. He's dealing with a sprained AC joint, but an MRI cleared him of any additional damage. Canzone will be sidelined at least a couple weeks, but it sounds like the diagnosis was close to a best-case scenario. Jonatan Clase is expected to see the bulk of the at-bats in left field in Canzone's place.

Canzone was removed from Sunday's game against the Cubs with an apparent shoulder injury, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. Canzone suffered the injury during the second inning when he collided with the wall in left field while making a catch. The 26-year-old didn't have a plate appearance prior to the injury and should be considered day-to-day as he continues to be evaluated.

Canzone isn't in the Mariners' lineup for Saturday's game against the Cubs. • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Projected as Opening Day starter

Daniel Kramer of MLB.com projects Canzone as the Mariners' Opening Day starter in left field following an impressive spring. Canzone finished Cactus League play having slashed .316/.372/1.109 with four doubles, four home runs and 11 RBI across 43 plate appearances. A trade-deadline acquisition from the Diamondbacks last season, Canzone also swiped a pair of bases during the exhibition slate, and he should see plenty of playing time against right-handed pitching beginning with Thursday's regular-season opener against the Red Sox.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Swipes bag in spring action

Canzone went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in a Cactus League win over the Angels on Thursday. He pushed his spring batting average to .231, while the stolen base was his first of the spring. The 26-year-old arrived via trade with the Diamondbacks last season and put in time in the corner outfield spots and designated hitter, but he limped to a .215 average and .248 OBP. However, Canzone was a stellar hitter in the minor leagues and struck out just 17.0 percent of the time with Seattle last season, lending credence to the notion he could be primed for much better production in 2024 now that he has some experience against big-league arms under his belt.
