  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Trending toward mid-August return

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Wednesday that Canzone (adductor) is expected to return from the 10-day injured list around the middle of August, Shannon Drayer of SeattleSports.com reports.

The target return date Hollander offered up more or less aligns with comments from manager Scott Servais over the weekend, when the skipper said Canzone was a couple weeks away from starting a rehab assignment. Canzone has been on the shelf since July 10 with a right adductor strain, an injury he sustained three days earlier while making a diving catch against the Blue Jays. Victor Robles had been seeing reps in right field following Canzone's placement on the shelf, but with Robles likely to be needed in center field more frequently after Julio Rodriguez (ankle) landed on the IL on Tuesday, Mitch Haniger and Cade Marlowe look to be the main candidates to pick up starts in right.

  • Mariners' Dominic Canzone: Not ready for IL return

Canzone (thigh), who is first eligible to return from the injured list Saturday, is still recovering according to manager Scott Servais and remains multiple weeks away from beginning a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports.

The fact the outfielder won't have a minimum-length stay on the IL is unsurprising, given the nature of his injury and the fact there haven't been any reports of Canzone engaging in any type of baseball activities yet. Servais estimated Friday that Canzone is still at least a couple weeks away from being sent down to an affiliate for a rehab assignment, and that timeline could naturally be extended if his recovery doesn't start gathering some momentum soon. While Canzone remains sidelined, Victor Robles could continue drawing the bulk of starts in right field, although Mitch Haniger and Jonatan Clase are also candidates to occasionally slot in.

The Mariners placed Canzone on the 10-day injured list Wednesday with a right adductor strain.

He'll be eligible to return from the IL shortly after the All-Star break, but it's uncertain whether Canzone will be ready for activation at that time.

Canzone exited Tuesday's win over the Padres after feeling discomfort in his groin while running, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports.

Canzone said he initially suffered the injury while making a catch during Sunday's contest, and it flared up in the fifth frame Tuesday while running to second base on a double. He's slated to receive an MRI on Wednesday, which will help determine his availability for Seattle's final stretch of games before the All-Star break.
