Player Outlook
Otto Lopez saw just 10 plate appearances in the majors in 2023 as an oblique strain forced him onto the 60-day injured list in July, with the majority of his playing time coming across 346 plate appearances at Triple-A Buffalo. Lopez slashed .258/.313/.343 in Triple-A before the injury shortened his season. Capable of playing both middle infield roles as well as across the outfield, Lopez's path to major league playing time is pretty muddy. The signing of Isiah Kiner-Falefa knocks Lopez down the utility man depth chart for the Blue Jays as he'll likely compete with Ernie Clement for a bench role in 2024.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Absent from lineup

Lopez is not in the lineup for Saturday's game versus the Nationals. Lopez has been operating as the Marlins' primary second baseman, but his production has slowed in June with just a .477 OPS. He'll get a day off to regroup while Vidal Brujan handles the keystone.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Swipes bag in return

Lopez went 1-for-4 with a run scored and a stolen base in Tuesday's 4-2 win over the Mets. Batting sixth in his return from paternity leave, Lopez created an insurance run for the Marlins in the ninth inning nearly on his own -- he led off the frame with a single, stole second, took third on Francisco Alvarez's throwing error then scored on a sacrifice fly. Lopez extended his hitting streak to seven games in the process. Since taking over the starting job at second base in early May, he's slashing .296/.322/.395 over 24 contests with two homers, four steals, seven runs and 16 RBI.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Activated from paternity leave

The Marlins activated Lopez (personal) from the paternity list Monday. Lopez was away from the club for a few days while welcoming a new addition to his family. He had been operating as the Marlins' primary second baseman prior to going on paternity leave and should regain that role.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Lands on paternity list

The Marlins placed Lopez on the paternity list Friday. Lopez will step away from the Marlins for a few days to be with his growing family. Vidal Brujan will receive the start at second base Friday for the Marlins.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Three hits in Friday's win

Lopez went 3-for-4 with a stolen base in Friday's 8-2 win over the Rangers. The 25-year-old has five hits in the last two games as he solidifies his hold on the starting job at second base for the Marlins. Lopez isn't supplying any power right now, however -- while he's batting .325 (13-for-40) over his last 11 games with three steals, three runs and eight RBI, his last extra-base hit was a double May 18.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Pilfers third bag

Lopez went 2-for-4 with a walk, two runs scored, an RBI and a stolen base in Wednesday's win over the Padres. The 25-year-old infielder has seized the starting job at second base in the wake of the Luis Arraez trade. Through 30 games in the majors this season, Lopez is slashing a solid .273/.313/.429 with three homers, three steals, 11 runs and 15 RBI, and Statcast has graded him in the 89th percentile for outs above average on the defensive side of the ball. Given his career .288/.354/.401 line over nearly 1,000 plate appearances at Triple-A, this level of production seems very sustainable for Lopez, and he could even get more aggressive on the basepaths -- he's stolen 42 bags in 53 attempts at Triple-A.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Sitting Sunday

Lopez is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's series finale against the Diamondbacks. Lopez will sit Sunday after starting in the first two games of the series, going 2-for-7 with two RBI. Vidal Brujan will start at second base and bat eighth against Arizona southpaw Blake Walston.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Retaining regular role at keystone

Lopez will start at second base and bat eighth in Wednesday's game against the Brewers. Lopez will stick in the lineup for the 11th game in a row, with his starting assignments Tuesday and Wednesday being especially notable in light of Tim Anderson's return from the injured list earlier in the week. Vidal Brujan has been on the bench for both games since Anderson stepped back in as the Marlins' everyday shortstop, signaling that manager Skip Schumaker is content to stick with Lopez at the keystone while the 25-year-old is wielding a hot bat. Through 16 games thus far in May, Lopez is slashing .310/.362/.524 with two home runs, two stolen bases, 10 RBI and six runs.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Swipes bag in win

Lopez went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a stolen base in Monday's extra-inning win over the Brewers. Making another start at second base, Lopez continued a strong stretch that has seen him slash .306/.350/.528 over the last 11 games with two homers, a steal, four runs and eight RBI. The 25-year-old has been forming an effective double-play duo with Vidal Brujan of late, but with Tim Anderson (back) poised to come off the IL, it's not clear how the Marlins will divvy up playing time at the middle-infield spots between the three players. Lopez has played well enough to remain in a significant role, however.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Homers again

Lopez went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run Monday against the Tigers. Lopez took advantage of his third-straight start in place of Tim Anderson by collecting his fourth hit and second homer during that short stretch of games. Lopez has played 17 games this season totaling 32 at-bats, hitting .313 with three homers, six RBI, eight runs and a steal. Lopez has displayed a nice hit tool throughout his seven-year rise through the minors, topping .300 in three separate seasons, but the recent power surge is not consistent with his expected profile.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Draws third straight start

Lopez will start at second base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Tigers. Lopez will make his third straight start in the middle infield while Tim Anderson sits again due to lower-back tightness. The 25-year-old has swung a hot bat over his last two starts, going 3-for-6 with a home run, a double and a walk.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Recalled from Triple-A

Lopez was recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Lopez earned a promotion after 15-for-26 with two home runs at Jacksonville. He's starting at third base Monday against the Giants but should ultimately settle into a utility role.

  • Marlins' Otto Lopez: Set to be recalled

Lopez will be recalled from Triple-A Jacksonville prior to Monday's game against the Giants, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Lopez was claimed off waivers earlier this month and has gone 15-for-26 with two home runs at Jacksonville. The utility player should be used in a reserve role.

  • Giants' Otto Lopez: Loses 40-man roster spot

Lopez was designated for assignment by the Giants on Monday. The Giants needed to clear a spot on the 40-man roster for Nick Avila. It's the second time since February that Lopez has been designated for assignment, as it previously happened with the Blue Jays before he was traded to San Francisco. There could be interest on waivers due to his versatility.

  • Giants' Otto Lopez: Optioned to Sacramento

The Giants optioned Lopez to Triple-A Sacramento on Tuesday, Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. The Giants acquired Lopez from Toronto during the offseason, and he will return to the minors to begin the season after going 5-for-21 with a homer and nine RBI during the spring. Lopez has three hits in five career MLB plate appearances, though he will have to prove he can perform consistently in Triple-A before he can secure a big-league role.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Exits 40-man roster

Lopez was designated for assignment by the Blue Jays on Friday, Kaitlyn McGrath of The Athletic reports. A spot on the 40-man roster was needed for Yariel Rodriguez, whose signing finally became official. Lopez saw spot action with the Blue Jays in 2021 and 2022 but spent all of 2023 at Triple-A Buffalo, posting a .656 OPS in 84 contests. The 25-year-old's bat is a little light, but he's young and can play all over the field, so there might be interest on waivers.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Reinstated from 60-day IL

Lopez (oblique) was activated from the 60-day injured list Monday. This is a procedural move for the Blue Jays after Lopez finished the 2023 season on the injured list due to a left oblique strain. He'll be ready to roll for the start of spring training.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Recalled, placed on 60-day IL

The Blue Jays recalled Lopez from Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a left oblique strain, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports. Lopez last played at Triple-A on July 22 and is thus technically eligible for activation in late September, but he'll most likely remain on the IL for the rest of the season. Assuming that's the case, Lopez will wrap up the 2023 campaign with a .251/.307/.330 slash line and 31 RBI across 330 plate appearances with Buffalo. His move to the 60-day IL clears a spot on the 40-man roster for right-hander Hyun Jin Ryu (elbow), who was activated off the 60-day IL on Tuesday ahead of his scheduled start against the Orioles.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Optioned to Triple-A

Lopez was optioned to Triple-A Buffalo by the Blue Jays on Tuesday. Lopez's stint in the big leagues lasted all of one day and he didn't make an appearance. Ernie Clement has taken his spot on the roster.

  • Blue Jays' Otto Lopez: Optioned to Triple-A

The Blue Jays optioned Lopez to Triple-A Buffalo on Tuesday, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Nathan Lukes beat Lopez out for the final position player spot on Toronto's roster. The versatile 24-year-old should get another shot with the big club soon enough.
