Abbott allowed a solo homer in the first inning but was solid through four frames before his start was shortened by a lengthy rain delay. The southpaw threw 40 of 58 pitches for strikes with six whiffs, an encouraging effort after he was tagged for seven runs by the Cubs in his Aug. 29 outing. It's the first time in five June starts that Abbott's served up multiple homers, but on the season he's been tagged for 15 long balls in just 90 innings to fuel what would be a career-worst 3.90 ERA. He'll try to tighten things up in his next outing, which is scheduled to come on the road next week in Milwaukee.

The southpaw served up a solo shot to Paul Goldschmidt in the first inning, but Abbott shut down the home side from there and got plenty of run support before exiting after 97 pitches (59 strikes). While the end result Monday was disappointing, Abbott has righted the ship after a miserable start to the season, posting a 2.48 ERA and 1.18 WHIP across 40 innings over his past seven starts. The 27-year-old is tentatively lined up to take the ball Sunday against Arizona.
