Thompson was designated for assignment by the Twins on Wednesday, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports.
Thompson was claimed off waivers by the Twins just last month, but his stay on the 40-man roster didn't last long. The 25-year-old speedster has slashed just .242/.286/.305 in 241 career major-league plate appearances.... See More ... See Less
Twins' Bubba Thompson: Claimed off waivers by Twins
The Twins claimed Thompson off waivers from the Yankees on Wednesday.
Thompson is now with his fifth different organization since August as he continues to bounce around via waivers. The Twins are known to be seeking some center field help as protection for Byron Buxton (knee) and Thompson could fill that role. The 25-year-old has slashed just .242/.286/.305 in 241 career major-league plate appearances, but he runs well and can play all three outfield spots.... See More ... See Less

The Yankees designated Thompson for assignment Friday.
With the signing of Luke Weaver becoming official Friday, Thompson will lose his spot on the Yankees' 40-man roster. The 25-year-old Thompson registered nine hits in 53 major-league at-bats last season, and he slashed .256/.334/.391 across 302 plate appearances in Triple-A.... See More ... See Less

Cincinnati claimed Thompson off waivers from the Royals on Thursday.
The former Rangers prospect was let go by Texas this past August and finished out the 2023 season with the Royals' Triple-A affiliate in Omaha. The Rangers DFA'd Thompson on Friday after he slashed just .170/.237/.283 through 60 plate appearances in the majors. The former top prospect will now get a second chance with the Royals, but he will have to prove himself with their Triple-A affiliate in Omaha before cracking the major-league lineup.... See More ... Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Designated for assignment
Thompson was designated for assignment by the Rangers on Friday.
Texas selected Thompson as the 26th overall pick in the 2017 MLB Draft out of an Alabama high school and he ranked as a top-100 prospect at one point, but the 25-year-old outfielder is now off the 40-man roster after slashing just .242/.286/.305 in 241 major-league plate appearances since his debut in August of 2022. He'll be an intriguing reclamation project for some club as he heads into DFA limbo. J.P. Martinez is joining the Rangers in a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less

This move opens up a 26-man roster spot for catcher Austin Hedges, who was acquired from the Pirates ahead of Tuesday's trade deadline. Thompson, 25, has slashed just .170/.237/.283 in 37 games this season at the major-league level.... See More ... See Less
Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Recalled from Triple-A
Texas recalled Thompson from Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.
Thompson has good speed, but he's slashed just .170/.237/.283 in 60 major-league plate appearances this season with the Rangers and probably won't play enough to carry fantasy relevance.... See More ... See Less
Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Optioned to Triple-A
The Rangers optioned Thompson to Triple-A Round Rock on Friday.
Thompson hadn't collected a hit since May 2 until Wednesday, when he broke a 17-game drought with a single. The 24-year-old outfielder will try to re-discover his swing in the minors before getting another crack at the big leagues. Thompson slashed .301/.352/.471 across 375 plate appearances in Triple-A last season.... See More ... See Less
Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Gets rare start
Thompson started in left field and went 0-for-3 in Monday's 5-0 win over Detroit.
Thompson made his first start since May 12 and was eventually removed for pinch hitter Travis Jankowski. With Mitch Garver's (knee) pending activation expected this week, Thompson's spot on the roster is in jeopardy. He's 8-for-51 (.157) over 35 games.... See More ... See Less
Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Fills in, steals bag
Thompson entered Saturday's game after left fielder Josh Smith was removed due to foot soreness. He went 0-for-1 with a walk and a stolen base in a 5-0 win over Oakland
Thompson walked for the third time in the last two games and stole a base in each contest. The light-hitting outfielder had walked once over his first 45 plate appearances before his three free passes over the last six PAs. With the Athletics scheduled to throw right-hander Drew Rucinski on Sunday, it's likely Texas will deploy the lefty-hitting Robbie Grossman in left instead of Thompson.... See More ... See Less
Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Steals, scores in loss
Thompson went 0-for-2 with two walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Friday's 9-7 extra-inning loss to Oakland.
Thompson made his first start in seven games, which is appropriate for a player hitting .178. He's reached base 11 times (eight hits, three walks) over 49 plate appearances and attempted four steals (caught once). Thompson's always looking to run, so the two walks were an encouraging sign.... Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Registers second steal
Thompson went 0-for-1 with a stolen base and a run scored in Saturday's 10-1 win over the Angels.
The Rangers had a great ninth inning -- Thompson initially entered as a pinch runner for Robbie Grossman, and he still got a turn at the plate, flying out to end a seven-run rally. Playing time is still a bit sparse for Thompson, and it's deserved, as he's slashing a meager .186/.205/.326 through 45 plate appearances. He's 2-for-3 on stolen base attempts, and he's added three RBI, eight runs scored, four doubles and a triple.... See More ... See Less
Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Collects two hits in win
Thompson started in left field, going 2-for-4 and was caught stealing in Saturday's 2-0 win over the Yankees.
Thompson, who made his first start in five games, entered the contest with one hit over his last 17 at-bats. He's always a threat to steal but getting on base has been problematic for Thompson, who has one walk and a .258 OBP over 32 plate appearances. Travis Jankowski, who started in center field for a resting Leody Taveras on Saturday, has emerged as a semi-regular, which makes Thompson's roster spot precarious. When Corey Seager (hamstring) returns, Thompson could be sent down while either Josh Smith or Ezequiel Duran remain to serve as the fifth outfielder.... See More ... See Less
Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Steals first bag
Thompson went 1-for-2 with a walk, a stolen base and a run scored in Monday's 7-6 loss to the Reds.
Thompson snapped an 0-for-15 skid with a bunt single in the second inning and later scored after stealing his first bag following his first walk of the season. He had 18 steals in 55 games last season, but Thompson's been a forgotten man in the outfield rotation in 2023. To use speed, a player has to get on base, and Thompson isn't doing that (.214 OBP).... Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Moves to bench Wednesday
Thompson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Royals.
After starting in each of Texas' last three games while going 3-for-12 with three extra-base hits, three runs and three RBI, Thompson will take a seat in the series finale. Leody Taveras (oblique) was activated from the 10-day injured list and will start in center field Wednesday, but Thompson could still have a path to playing time in the corner outfield with Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran likely to see more time in the infield for the foreseeable future after star shortstop Corey Seager (hamstring) was placed on the IL.... Rangers' Bubba Thompson: Sparks slumping offense
Thompson started in center field and went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, two RBI and two runs scored in Sunday's 8-2 win over the Cubs.
The Rangers' offense slumbered through the first two games of the series in Chicago, before Thompson and Travis Jankowski made their first starts of the season Sunday. The duo combined to go 3-for-7 with three RBI, three extra-base hits, four runs and a stolen base out the final spots in the order. To make room in the lineup for both players, Adolis Garcia moved from center field to designated hitter, and slumping right fielder Robbie Grossman (one hit in last 18 at-bats) rode the pine. Rangers manager Bruce Bochy has much to consider going forward. Center fielder Leody Taveras (oblique) is on rehab assignment and could return as early as Monday. For Thompson to land a regular gig, he could be part of the mix in left field, which had been penciled in as Grossman's job (with a healthy Taveras in center) and was being filled by Josh Smith and Ezequiel Duran....
