Evan White has not appeared in an MLB game since 2021, as the former first-round pick has dealt with a plethora of injuries, including surgery on his left hip this past May. The 27-year-old was signed to an MLB deal before he had played in the majors, and while he has shown elite defense in his limited time at the highest level, his career .544 OPS in 306 plate appearances tells the story of how much he's struggled at the plate. An inability to make contact has been the biggest culprit, as he's struck out in 37.6 percent of his plate appearances in his time with Seattle. White is expected to be ready for the start of spring training with his new team, the Angels, after several offseason transactions that included him losing his 40-man roster spot.

  • Angels' Evan White: Cleared to resume activities

White has been cleared to resume limited activities Monday after experiencing soreness in his surgically repaired left hip Saturday, Sam Blum of The Athletic reports. White -- who hasn't appeared in a major-league game since 2021 -- had surgery on the hip last May. The first baseman was acquired from Atlanta via trade earlier this offseason and is in camp as a non-roster invitee.

  • Angels' Evan White: Flipped to Halos

The Angels acquired White (hip) and Tyler Thomas from Atlanta on Friday in exchange for Max Stassi (hip/personal) and David Fletcher, Jeff Passan of ESPN.com reports. This is basically a swap of bad contracts, with White's maybe being the worst of them all. He hasn't appeared in a major-league game since 2021 and holds a career .544 OPS in 306 plate appearances at baseball's highest level. On top of that, he is currently in recovery mode from May hip surgery. The 27-year-old former top prospect is due $15 million guaranteed between 2024-25 and carries a total of $4 million in buyouts on his club options for 2026, 2027 and 2028.

  • Braves' Evan White: Pushed off 40-man roster

Atlanta outrighted White (hip) to Triple-A Gwinnett on Thursday. White was just acquired from the Mariners on Sunday as part of the Jarred Kelenic trade, but the 27-year-old former top prospect has already lost his 40-man roster spot. White is a career .165/.235/.308 hitter in 306 major-league plate appearances and missed the majority of the 2023 season following May hip surgery.

  • Braves' Evan White: Traded to Atlanta

White (hip) was traded from Seattle to Atlanta on Sunday along with Jarred Kelenic and Marco Gonzales in exchange for Jackson Kowar and Cole Phillips. White is entering his age-28 campaign and is owed $8 million over the next two seasons, but Seattle didn't use him in the majors in 2022 or 2023. Last season was a lost campaign for White, who ended up having hip surgery in May. He hasn't been a league-average hitter since his stint at Triple-A in 2021, and this was primarily a salary dump move by Seattle. White has a career .165/.235/.308 MLB slash line in 306 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Likely ready for spring

Mariners general manager Justin Hollander said Tuesday that White (hip) is expected to be ready for the start of spring training, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. White hasn't appeared in a major-league game since 2021 due to a series of severe injuries, but he's made steady progress in his recovery from his latest hip surgery this past May and should be able to enjoy a relatively normal offseason. The 27-year-old former top prospect owns a career .165/.235/.308 big-league batting line with 10 home runs and 115 strikeouts in 306 plate appearances.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Undergoes surgery

White underwent hip surgery Monday, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. White landed on the injured list in April with a left adductor strain, and the decision was ultimately made to send him under the knife. A timeline for his recovery was not revealed, but his absence will likely wind up being measured in months.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Heads to 60-day IL

The Mariners recalled White from Triple-A Tacoma on Sunday and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a left adductor strain. White suffered the injury while playing in an April 1 game with Tacoma, but he'll be moved to the 60-day major-league IL so that the Mariners can open up a 40-man roster spot. The 26-year-old hasn't appeared in a game at the MLB level since May 2021 due to a combination of injuries and ineffectiveness. He holds a career .165/.235/.308 big-league batting line.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Out two months with groin strain

White is expected to be sidelined two months after suffering a Grade 2 groin strain while playing at Triple-A Toledo, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. White has been snakebit by injuries, having missed most of the last two seasons with a hip injury and sports hernia surgery. Even when healthy, there doesn't appear to be a fit for White on the major-league club.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Optioned to Triple-A

White was optioned to Triple-A Tacoma by the Mariners on Tuesday, Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM reports. White will head to Triple-A as expected to receive regular at-bats after missing the majority of the 2021 and 2022 seasons due to injury. The former top prospect has struggled mightily at the highest level, but his strong defense at first could make him an option for the Mariners if he stays healthy and handles Triple-A pitching.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Hitless in return to action

White (general soreness) started at first base and went 0-for-2 in the Mariners' 6-1 Cactus League win over the Brewers on Sunday. White logged five innings in the field and took his last at-bat in the sixth as the Mariners eased him back into action following a two-game absence for rest. The 2017 first-round pick will continue his quest for a spot on the Opening Day roster moving forward, but he's hitting just .125 (1-for-8) across four Cactus League contests.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Back in lineup

White (soreness) is hitting sixth and playing first base Sunday in Cactus League action against the Brewers. White was scratched from the lineup Friday because of general soreness, and the Mariners gave him a couple of days to recover. The infielder is battling for a spot on the Opening Day roster, but the former top prospect is likely ticketed for Triple-A Tacoma to begin the year.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Scratched due to soreness

White was scratched from the Mariners' Cactus League lineup Friday due to general soreness, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. Mariners general manager Justin Hollander called it a precautionary move and said it's not a huge concern. White slugged his first home run of the spring Monday in his second Cactus League game, and he'll hopefully be able to return to action over the weekend. He's trying to avoid being sent back to Triple-A Tacoma to begin the 2023 campaign, although it's tough to project him for regular playing time with Ty France at first base and Teoscar Hernandez likely to be the regular DH.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Ready for spring training

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said Wednesday that White (hip) is as "healthy as he's ever been" heading into the start of spring training, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Though White was limited to just 107 plate appearances at Triple-A Tacoma in 2022 due to his prolonged recovery from sports hernia surgery last spring and then closed the campaign on the affiliate's 7-day injured list due to hip discomfort, the 26-year-old looks as though he won't face any restrictions when he reports to camp in Arizona. White is entering the fourth season of the six-year, $24 million deal he inked with Seattle in November 2019, but due to his poor health in recent years and his underwhelming production at the big-league level, the Mariners no longer envision him as their everyday first baseman. He'll get the chance to compete for a spot on the Opening Day roster but is most likely to begin the campaign at Tacoma unless an injury to All-Star Ty France opens up an opportunity at first base.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Sidelined at Triple-A

Triple-A Tacoma placed White on its 7-day injured list Sept. 10 with hip discomfort, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. White has been sidelined nearly all season after requiring sports hernia surgery in March and then experiencing hip soreness in early June while on a rehab assignment. The 26-year-old returned to action in early August and was eventually reinstated from the 60-day injured list and optioned to Triple-A after his 30-day rehab window expired. White had gone 8-for-27 with three home runs and three walks over his last seven games at Tacoma to potentially put himself in the mix for a late-season call-up to Seattle, but the renewed hip discomfort likely ends those hopes.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Activated, optioned to Tacoma

The Mariners reinstated White (sports hernia) from the 60-day injured list Monday and optioned him to Triple-A Tacoma. White has been on the shelf all season while recovering from the sports hernia surgery he underwent in March. After being pulled off his previous two rehab assignments in May and June following setbacks, White resumed his assignment with Tacoma on Aug. 9 and now looks to be fully healthy again after reaching the end of his latest 20-day evaluation window. Since the Mariners don't have an everyday role available for White, he'll continue to play regularly at Tacoma, where he's produced a .197/.305/.423 slash line in 82 plate appearances between his three separate rehab assignments. White had been far more productive at the plate in his most recent games and could be a candidate to join Seattle as a bench bat in September, when the roster expands from 26 to 28 men.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Rehabbing again

White (sports hernia) resumed his rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday and has gone 1-for-6 with a home run while playing both of the past two days. White is restarting his rehab program for the third time, after previously being pulled off assignments in early June and then again in mid-June after suffering setbacks in his recovery from the sports hernia surgery he underwent in late March. The 2022 campaign is shaping up to be a lost season for White, and even if he remains free of setbacks moving forward, the Mariners are likely to keep him on his rehab assignment for an extended period since there isn't an opening for him to play on an everyday basis for the big club.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Set to resume rehab in August

White (groin) is set to resume his rehab assignment in early August, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. A setback in his recovery from sports hernia surgery has kept White off the field since the middle of June, but he took batting practice Monday and will seemingly do more work in the days ahead. Barring another issue, White should be ready to rejoin the Mariners at some point next month.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Ends assignment, timeline unknown

White (sports hernia) was pulled off his rehab assignment at Triple-A Tacoma following his last appearance June 14 and has since taking part in baseball activities back in Seattle while receiving treatment, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. White has now been pulled off his rehab assignment on two occasions this season, as he was previously shut down for two weeks before returning to action for Tacoma for one game in mid-June. Altogether, White went 3-for-27 with 11 strikeouts across his nine rehab contests, so he wasn't finding much success before he informed the Mariners that he wasn't feeling right physically. The 26-year-old has been on injured list all season and hasn't played in an MLB game since May 13, 2021, as his previous campaign was cut short when he required surgery to repair a left hip flexor strain. At this stage, the Mariners likely aren't counting on White being a major contributor in 2022 if and when he's healthy again.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Jumps back into rehab assignment

White (hip) resumed his rehab assignment with Triple-A Tacoma on Tuesday, going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a win over Sacramento. White had been out of game action since May 31 after suffering a reaggravation in his hip/groin area, so the infielder's return seemingly indicates he's back to full health. The 26-year-old's rehab assignment doesn't have a firm timetable for conclusion as of yet, and White could remain with the Rainiers even after activation.

  • Mariners' Evan White: Rehab shut down

White (hip), who last played in a rehab game for Triple-A Tacoma on May 31, has been sidelined due to an aggravation in his hip/groin area, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. White was riding a six-game on-base streak at the time of his apparent injury, and there's currently no timetable for him to return to action. The 26-year-old has undergone surgeries for both a left hip flexor strain and a sports hernia during the last 12 months, so his current issue is completely unsurprising but still concerning.
