  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Starting ALDS Game 3

Montero will start Wednesday in Game 3 of the ALDS versus the Guardians. Montero tossed two shutout innings in relief in Game 1 and will now be handed a start on three days' rest. The right-hander was used primarily as a starter by the Tigers this season, but while he's capable of providing length, manager A.J. Hinch no doubt will have a short leash with Montero. Lefty Brant Hurter is a prime candidate to enter after Montero and provide multiple innings.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Left off wild-card roster

Montero is not on the Tigers' roster for the American League Wild Card Series against the Astros, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. The Tigers' starting pitching plans beyond Tarik Skubal in Game 1 are cloudy, but Montero didn't make the cut despite a 3.79 ERA over 10 starts and two relief appearances from August on. He could potentially be added to the ALDS roster, if the Tigers advance.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Uneven start Wednesday

Montero allowed one run on four hits and two walks across 2.2 innings and did not factor into the decision Wednesday against the Rays. He struck out two. Montero started the game and managed to limit the damage, but he allowed too many baserunners and got lifted after only tossing 55 pitches. The Tigers then turned to Sean Guenther, who was much more effective, as he posted two perfect innings with three strikeouts to earn the win. Montero has had some nice moments during his rookie season, though the Tigers didn't take any chances extending the youngster Wednesday as they claw toward a playoff spot. The righty is not slated to start again during the regular season but could be used in relief over the weekend if a need arises. If this is it for Montero in 2024, he'll finish the year with a 4.81 ERA, 1.32 WHIP and 75 strikeouts across 95.1 innings.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Struggles as bulk pitcher Friday

Montero allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk across 4.2 innings of work in Friday's 7-1 loss to the Orioles. He struck out seven. Montero followed opener Tyler Holton, who allowed two runs of his own, so the former wasn't charged with the loss. However, Montero still struggled as he gave up four home runs and saw his ERA climb from 4.60 to 4.86. The silver lining was the seven strikeouts, which were one away from matching a season high. Montero was previously penciled in to start Sunday's contest against Baltimore, but the team will likely go in a different direction after the righty tossed 82 pitches on Friday. Montero would then likely start or serve as a bulk pitcher sometime next week.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Coughs up five runs

Montero allowed five runs on seven hits and a walk over 4.2 innings during a no-decision Friday. He struck out seven during the loss to Baltimore. The only reason Montero didn't take the loss is because Tyler Holton opened the game and coughed up two runs in the first inning. Montero gave up a combined four home runs against Colton Cowser and James McCann during his outing. Montero had delivered 14 scoreless frames over his previous two outings before Friday's hiccup. The right-handed rookie owns a 4.86 ERA with a 73:28 K:BB through 92.2 innings. Montero is lined up to end his 2024 season with a home start against the White Sox.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Second consecutive scoreless start

Montero (6-6) earned the win Sunday, allowing five hits and one walk over five scoreless innings against the Orioles. He struck out one. Montero did not allow a run for the second game in a row, with the biggest threat coming when he worked around a one-out second and third situation in the third inning. The 24-year-old rookie was pulled following just 63 pitches through five innings after coming off a complete-game shutout of the Rockies in his last start. Montero's ERA has dropped nearly a full run thanks to his most recent performances, moving from 5.47 to 4.60 with a 1.27 WHIP and 66 strikeouts through 88 innings. He's next slated to get another shot at the Orioles, this time in Baltimore.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Can't get through five frames

Montero did not factor into the decision in an extra-inning loss to the Padres on Wednesday, allowing five runs on seven hits and two walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two. Montero held the Padres scoreless through the first three innings before failing to retire three of the first four batters in the fourth -- the latter of which would take the right-hander deep for a three-run shot. Montero then went on to surrender another two runs in the fifth as San Diego tied the game at 5-5, and he would not make it through the frame, marking his shortest outing since June 26 against Philadelphia (span of 11 starts). The five runs allowed on the night matched a season high for the 24-year-old and he's now given up multiple runs in each of his last three starts. Montero has also issued multiple free passes in five-consecutive outings.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Gives up three runs in loss

Montero (4-6) took the loss Thursday against the Angels, giving up three runs on five hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out five. Montero entered Thursday's game with a 3-0 record and 3.00 ERA over his last four starts, but he was bested by the Angels. Montero still managed to get through five innings, and he has now gone 11 straight starts pitching five or more innings. The right-hander has a 5.17 ERA over 69.2 innings in his rookie campaign.

Montero (1-4) took the loss Friday against the Twins, giving up six runs (five earned) on eight hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out five. Montero gave up home runs to three of the first seven batters he faced. He still managed to get through five innings, but Montero has now given up multiple home runs in three of his six career starts. • Tigers' Keider Montero: Allows five runs in no-decision

Montero did not factor into the decision in Saturday's 11-9 extra-inning win against the Dodgers, allowing five runs on seven hits and four walks with four strikeouts over five innings. Montero allowed the first batter he faced to reach base in four of five innings and yielded runs in the first, third and fifth frames. He had logged back-to-back quality starts but has now surrendered at least four earned runs in his three other outings this season. The rookie will take an uninspiring 5.47 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 23:10 K:BB across 26.1 innings into the All-Star break.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Dazzles in no-decision Monday

Montero tossed 6.1 scoreless innings but did not factor into the decision in Monday's game against the Guardians. He allowed three hits and a walk, while striking out four. Montero certainly pitched well enough to earn his second win in the majors, but Gavin Williams was equally as impressive for Cleveland, though the Tigers scored once in the eighth for a 1-0 win. After allowing nine runs over 8.2 innings in his first two MLB appearances, Montero has turned things around, allowing just two runs across 12.2 innings in his two most recent outings. The 24-year-old has good stuff, and given his recent performances, he may stick in the rotation for the foreseeable future. He's currently penciled in to start again Saturday against the Dodgers before the All-Star break.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Receiving second start

Montero is scheduled to start Monday's game against the Guardians in Detroit, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. He'll pick up a second straight turn through the rotation after he earned his first MLB win while limiting the Twins to two earned runs on six hits and one walk over 6.1 innings this past Wednesday following his promotion from Triple-A Toledo. Assuming he performs well enough against the Guardians to stick around with the big club, Montero will line up for one final start before the All-Star break next weekend versus the Dodgers at Comerica Park.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Expected to get multiple turns

The Tigers recalled Montero from Triple-A Toledo on Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Montero will draw the start Wednesday in Minnesota. While he's technically filling in for Jack Flaherty (back) on Wednesday, Montero will receive multiple turns as a replacement for Casey Mize (hamstring), per manager A.J. Hinch. Montero has allowed nine runs with an 11:4 K:BB over 8.2 innings with the Tigers this season and holds a 5.03 ERA and 54:30 K:BB across 48.1 frames for Toledo.

The Tigers recalled Montero from Tripe-A Toledo on Wednesday. Montero's lone prior big-league appearance came as a starter back on May 29, when he gave up four earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out five across 4.1 innings in a loss to the Pirates. Montero owns a 5.03 ERA and 1.70 WHIP over 13 starts with Toledo this season.

Mason Englert is expected to be optioned to Triple-A Toledo in a corresponding move. Montero, 23, allowed four runs in 4.1 innings in his major-league debut versus the Pirates last month. It would appear Wednesday's appearance will be another spot start for the righty and he'll head back to Toledo after the game.

  • Tigers' Keider Montero: Recalled ahead of MLB debut

The Tigers recalled Montero from Triple-A Toledo ahead of his scheduled start in the second game of Wednesday's doubleheader with the Pirates. Because they designated Montero as their 27th man for the twin bill, the Tigers waited until after their 8-0 win in the opening game of the day before activating him. The 23-year-old right-hander will make his MLB debut Wednesday before presumably heading back to Toledo immediately after the start. Over his nine outings with the Triple-A club this season spanning 30.2 innings, Montero has accrued a 4.40 ERA, 1.49 WHIP and 36:17 K:BB.
