Player Outlook
Jose Butto received an extended look in the Mets' rotation last season and was solid with a 3.64 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 38:23 K:BB over 42 innings. He fared much worse at Triple-A Syracuse (5.93 ERA in 19 starts), which gives some pause for the big-league numbers given the small sample size. The right-hander isn't likely to make the Opening Day rotation in 2024 but could earn a spot in the bullpen with a strong showing in spring training.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Hit hard in Friday's loss

Butto (0-1) took the loss Friday as the Mets fell, 4-2, to the Cardinals, giving up four runs on four hits and three walks over 5.2 innings. He struck out four. Homers by Alec Burleson in the second inning and Willson Contreras in the third accounted for all the damage off Butto, and were the first long balls he's served up this season. The right-hander tossed 94 pitches (56 strikes) before exiting, and while his 2.86 ERA and 1.09 WHIP through 22 innings look sharp, he's walking a tightrope with his control and command -- Butto has issued at least three walks in three of his four starts, and he's hit a batter with a pitch in three straight. The 26-year-old will look for his first win of 2024 when he takes the mound next week at home against the Cubs.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Trouble finding plate Saturday

Butto came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 6-4 win over the Dodgers, giving up two runs on three hits and five walks over 4.1 innings while striking out six. The right-hander threw only 47 of 95 pitches for strikes, but he was able to limit the damage. Butto was coming off back-to-back quality starts, so one shaky performance shouldn't jeopardize his spot in the rotation, but he now has a 21:9 K:BB through his first 16.1 big-league innings this season to go along with his 1.65 ERA and 1.04 WHIP. He'll look to sharpen his control in his next outing, which lines up to come next weekend at home against the Cardinals.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Dominates Royals

Butto yielded two hits and one walk over six scoreless innings in a no-decision in Sunday's 2-1 win over the Royals. He struck out nine. Butto was promoted Sunday and made the most of his opportunity with a terrific outing. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza said afterward that Butto is "not going anywhere," per David Adler of MLB.com, implying the right-hander will remain in the starting rotation. Butto gave up a pair of doubles but ultimately never found himself in much danger Saturday, and he now has a 15:4 K:BB with just one run allowed over 12 innings at the MLB level this season. He should be picked up in most fantasy leagues, though managers may want to proceed with caution this upcoming week with a tough road matchup against the Dodgers on the schedule.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Promoted for Sunday's start

Butto was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start Sunday's game against the Royals. The 26-year-old allowed one run over six frames in a spot start during a doubleheader last week, and he'll rejoin the Mets to start the series finale versus Kansas City. Butto should receive at least a couple turns through the rotation while Tylor Megill (shoulder) is on the injured list.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: In line for Sunday's start

The Mets are expected to call up Butto from Triple-A Syracuse to start Sunday against the Royals, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Adrian Houser would be on regular rest Sunday, but the Mets will go ahead and bring Butto up this weekend rather waiting until early next week. Butto tossed six innings of one-run ball in a spot start last week against the Tigers after nearly winning a rotation spot following a strong showing this spring. The 26-year-old should be in line to make at least one additional start after Sunday due to Tylor Megill (shoulder) still being on the injured list.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Likely to start Saturday

The Mets are expected to recall Butto from Triple-A Syracuse to start Saturday against the Royals, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Butto was with the Mets last week when he made a spot start Thursday against the Tigers, tossing six innings and striking out six while allowing one run in a no-decision. Since he was designated as the Mets' 27th man for the twin bill, Butto was sent back to Syracuse after the spot start, but he doesn't look like he'll have to wait long to get the ball again for the big club. Saturday had been Julio Teheran's turn in the rotation, but Teheran was designated for assignment after just one start. With Kodai Senga (shoulder) and Tylor Megill (shoulder) on the injured list, Butto could wind up staying in the rotation for multiple turns.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Hurls six frames in spot start

Butto allowed one run on three hits and three walks while striking out six batters over six innings in a no-decision against the Tigers in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader. Butto was called up from Triple-A Syracuse as the Mets' 27th man and got the start for Game 2 of the twin bill. The right-hander made a strong impression, firing 90 pitches and racking up 12 whiffs among his 52 strikes. He allowed just a second-inning run but departed in line for the loss since New York's offense couldn't put a run on the board until the ninth inning. Butto held his own over nine big-league appearances last year, posting a 3.64 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 38:23 K:BB over 42 innings. The Mets signed Julio Teheran on Wednesday to fill a spot in the rotation with Kodai Senga (shoulder) and Tylor Megill (shoulder) both on the injured list, but if Teheran doesn't perform well, a door could open for Butto to make additional big-league starts.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Making spot start Thursday

Butto will be called up from Triple-A Syracuse to start the second game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Tigers, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. He will be added to the roster as the 27th man for the doubleheader once the matinee concludes. Butto nearly won a rotation spot with a strong spring, allowing just one earned run in 10 innings. He permitted two earned runs over five innings in his first start with Triple-A Syracuse.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Could start Thursday

Butto could be recalled from Triple-A Syracuse to start for the Mets in the second game of Thursday's doubleheader versus the Tigers, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Butto wouldn't be eligible to be recalled from Triple-A yet under normal circumstances, but because the Mets can add a 27th man for the doubleheader, the 26-year-old is an option. The righty allowed two earned runs over five innings in his first start with Syracuse and yielded just one earned run in 10 frames this spring.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Not immediate rotation option

Butto can't be added to the 26-man roster until April 12 without an associated injured list move, and he likely isn't an option to replace Tylor Megill (shoulder) in the rotation when the Mets next need a fifth starter April 9, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. The Mets are caught in a bind when it comes to their pitching staff. With Yohan Ramirez facing a two-game suspension, the team elected to add Reed Garrett to the roster for bullpen depth when Megill landed on the IL, which blocks Butto or Joey Lucchesi from being promoted to plug the immediate hole in the rotation. That gives prospects Christian Scott and Mike Vasil, who aren't yet on the 40-man roster, a leg up to take Megill's spot. The Mets are also said to have interest in signing Julio Teheran. Butto could be added late in the month, however -- New York plays 13 games in 13 days starting Friday and will likely need a sixth starter to get through that stretch.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Candidate for rotation

Butto is an option to fill the spot in the Mets' rotation vacated by Tylor Megill (shoulder), Michael Mayer of MetsmerizedOnline.com reports. Butto pitched well during spring training in allowing just one run with a 9:2 K:BB over 10 innings. He lost out to Megill for the No. 5 spot at that time but could now slide into the slot due to injury. Joey Lucchesi is another candidate to replace Megill, and the Mets also are reportedly showing interest in Julio Teheran.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Optioned to Triple-A

The Mets optioned Butto to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday, Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Butto put his best foot forward this spring in the competition for the final spot in the Mets' rotation, yielding just one run with a 9:2 K:BB over 10 innings. However, the team ultimately decided on Tylor Megill to round out the rotation. Butto will join Syracuse's rotation for now but will still probably be needed to make some starts for the Mets this season.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Sharp in first spring start

Butto gave up three hits over two scoreless innings in Sunday's Grapefruit League game against the Astros. He struck out one without walking a batter. The 25-year-old right-hander got his spring off to a good start as he battles for an Opening Day spot with the Mets. Butto looked good at the end of last season in the majors, posting a 3.29 ERA, 1.10 WHIP and 28:9 K:BB over five starts and 27.1 innings, but his 5.93 ERA and 1.63 WHIP at Triple-A Syracuse in a larger sample (91 innings) are concerning. He's battling with Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi and others in camp for one of the team's open rotation jobs.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Fighting for rotation spot

Butto will be among those competing for the final spot in the Mets' rotation following the injury to Kodai Senga (shoulder), Tim Healey of Newsday reports. He'll be going up against Tylor Megill, Joey Lucchesi and Max Kranick for the gig. Butto, who turns 26 next month, held a 3.64 ERA and 38:23 K:BB over 42 frames covering seven starts and two relief appearances for the Mets in 2023. He posted a 5.93 ERA in 19 starts during his time at Triple-A Buffalo.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Yields four runs in loss

Butto (1-3) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over four innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Phillies. Butto's outing was derailed by a four-run fourth inning that included a two-run homer by Nick Castellanos. Butto had allowed just four runs over his previous three starts covering 17.1 innings, and Sunday's outing was his first time giving up more than three runs. His ERA jumped to 3.75 alongside a 34:21 K:BB through 36 frames. Butto is currently lined up to end his 2023 season with a home start against the Phillies.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Punches out six

Butto yielded one run on four hits and a walk over six innings in Monday's win against Miami. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. Butto turned in four scoreless innings before the Marlins finally tagged him with a run in the fifth frame. Over his last three outings, he's allowed four runs over 17.1 frames (2.08 ERA) with a 19:5 K:BB. His season ERA dropped to 3.09 through 32 MLB innings. Butto's next start is currently lined up to start in Philadelphia this weekend.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Falters after six standout frames

Butto settled for a no-decision against the Nationals on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 6.1 innings. Butto was outstanding through five frames, giving up just four hits and one walk while keeping Washington scoreless. He returned for the seventh and yielded a pair of singles before exiting with one out and a 2-0 lead, and he lost his chance at a victory when both baserunners crossed the plate following his departure. Despite the disappointing ending, this was easily Butto's best outing of the campaign, as he picked up his first quality start and recorded a season-high strikeout total. The right-hander has a good chance of sticking in the Mets' rotation given the solid outing and the fact that Carlos Carrasco is out for the season with a fractured pinky finger.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Recalled from Triple-A

Butto was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Butto is part of a wave of promotions for the Mets as rosters expand. He'll join the team's bullpen and could be an option for spot starts in the final month.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Joining bullpen Friday

Butto will be added to the Mets' major-league roster Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Butto is expected to work out of the bullpen down the stretch. The 25-year-old has posted a 4.30 ERA in 14.2 innings (two starts, two relief appearances) this season at the major-league level and a 5.93 ERA in 91 innings (19 starts) with Triple-A Syracuse.

  • Mets' Jose Butto: Returns to Triple-A

The Mets optioned Butto to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. Butto will presumably transition back into a starting role as heads back to Syracuse after he was called up from Triple-A on Tuesday to provide a fresh arm out of the New York bullpen. He came on in relief of David Peterson and proceeded to pitch 2.2 innings, taking the loss Tuesday against the Pirates after giving up three earned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out five. The Mets selected right-hander Dennis Santana from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Butto's spot in the bullpen and on the 26-man active roster.
