Butto (1-4) allowed two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out four over six innings, taking the loss Sunday versus the Phillies. Butto earned his third quality start of the season but was once again let down by his offense. The right-hander allowed two or fewer runs in all but two of his nine appearances (seven starts), but he came away with just one win. He finishes 2023 with a 3.64 ERA, 1.33 WHIP and 38:23 K:BB over 42 major-league innings.... See More ... See Less

Mets' Jose Butto: Yields four runs in loss
Butto (1-3) allowed four runs on four hits and two walks over four innings Sunday, striking out five and taking a loss against the Phillies. Butto's outing was derailed by a four-run fourth inning that included a two-run homer by Nick Castellanos. Butto had allowed just four runs over his previous three starts covering 17.1 innings, and Sunday's outing was his first time giving up more than three runs. His ERA jumped to 3.75 alongside a 34:21 K:BB through 36 frames. Butto is currently lined up to end his 2023 season with a home start against the Phillies.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Punches out six
Butto yielded one run on four hits and a walk over six innings in Monday's win against Miami. He struck out six and did not factor in the decision. Butto turned in four scoreless innings before the Marlins finally tagged him with a run in the fifth frame. Over his last three outings, he's allowed four runs over 17.1 frames (2.08 ERA) with a 19:5 K:BB. His season ERA dropped to 3.09 through 32 MLB innings. Butto's next start is currently lined up to start in Philadelphia this weekend.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Collects first big-league win
Butto (1-2) picked up the win in Tuesday's 7-4 victory over the Diamondbacks, allowing one run on two hits and three walks over five innings. He struck out seven. It was a night of firsts for the Mets' younger players, as Ronny Mauricio's first career homer helped get Butto his first career win. The 25-year-old right-hander has looked good in his return to the rotation in September, giving up three runs in 11.1 innings over two starts with a 13:4 K:BB, but whether he's still in the mix for a starting spot in 2024 will likely depend on how aggressive the front office is in free agency this winter. Butto's next outing is likely to come early next week in Miami.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Falters after six standout frames
Butto settled for a no-decision against the Nationals on Wednesday, allowing two runs on six hits and one walk while striking out six batters over 6.1 innings. Butto was outstanding through five frames, giving up just four hits and one walk while keeping Washington scoreless. He returned for the seventh and yielded a pair of singles before exiting with one out and a 2-0 lead, and he lost his chance at a victory when both baserunners crossed the plate following his departure. Despite the disappointing ending, this was easily Butto's best outing of the campaign, as he picked up his first quality start and recorded a season-high strikeout total. The right-hander has a good chance of sticking in the Mets' rotation given the solid outing and the fact that Carlos Carrasco is out for the season with a fractured pinky finger.... See More ... Mets' Jose Butto: Recalled from Triple-A
Butto was recalled from Triple-A Syracuse on Friday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Butto is part of a wave of promotions for the Mets as rosters expand. He'll join the team's bullpen and could be an option for spot starts in the final month.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Joining bullpen Friday
Butto will be added to the Mets' major-league roster Friday, Tim Healey of Newsday reports. Butto is expected to work out of the bullpen down the stretch. The 25-year-old has posted a 4.30 ERA in 14.2 innings (two starts, two relief appearances) this season at the major-league level and a 5.93 ERA in 91 innings (19 starts) with Triple-A Syracuse.... Mets' Jose Butto: Returns to Triple-A
The Mets optioned Butto to Triple-A Syracuse on Wednesday. Butto will presumably transition back into a starting role as heads back to Syracuse after he was called up from Triple-A on Tuesday to provide a fresh arm out of the New York bullpen. He came on in relief of David Peterson and proceeded to pitch 2.2 innings, taking the loss Tuesday against the Pirates after giving up three earned runs on two hits and three walks while striking out five. The Mets selected right-hander Dennis Santana from Triple-A Syracuse to fill Butto's spot in the bullpen and on the 26-man active roster.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Returned to Triple-A
Butto was returned to Triple-A Syracuse on Thursday. Butto served as the 27th man for the Mets during Wednesday's doubleheader against the Tigers and allowed one earned run over 2.1 innings of relief. He'll jump back into a starting role at Triple-A.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Back up for twin bill
The Mets recalled Butto from Triple-A Syracuse and designated him as the 27th man for Wednesday's doubleheader in Detroit, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Butto previously served as the 27th man for Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta, but he went unused after being called up prior to the second game of the twin bill. After being returned to Triple-A on Tuesday, Butto will be back with the big club a day later as the 27th man once again. He'll be available for both games of the doubleheader this time around before heading back to Syracuse.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Up for back end of twin bill
The Mets recalled Butto from Triple-A Syracuse ahead of the second game of Monday's doubleheader with Atlanta. Though Butto was optioned to Syracuse just one day earlier, he's eligible to pitch in relief for the nightcap Monday since the Mets are designating him as their 27th man for the twin bill. He'll give the Mets a fresh arm after the team needed five relievers to cover nine innings in the 9-8 loss in Game 1, though Butto won't necessarily be tasked with a big workload in Game 2 if starter Tylor Megill is able to provide a decent amount of length.... Mets' Jose Butto: Demoted back to minors
The Mets optioned Butto to Triple-A Syracuse on Sunday. Due to a rainout Sunday, the Mets will conclude their series with Atlanta with a doubleheader Monday. Butto looked to be a candidate to start one of those two contests along with Tylor Megill, but unless the Mets elect to place another player on the injured list in a corresponding move, Butto won't be eligible to be recalled ahead of the twin bill. Butto's demotion comes after he pitched to a 2.79 ERA in 9.2 innings over his prior two starts with the big club, but his underlying numbers -- specifically, a 3:10 K:BB -- didn't portend strong results moving forward.... Mets' Jose Butto: Picks up another start
Butto is scheduled to start Sunday's game against Atlanta at Citi Field. Butto will wind up getting two starts this week, as he previously took a loss to the Nationals on Tuesday while working 4.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits and six walks. Through his two outings with the big club this season, Butto owns an ugly 3:10 K:BB in 9.2 innings, and the poor control he's displayed thus far makes it tough to rely on him as a streaming option against a potent Atlanta lineup. The Mets are set to return Max Scherzer from suspension next week and will likely get Justin Verlander (shoulder) back from the injured list as well, so expect Butto to be optioned back to Triple-A Syracuse following Sunday's start, regardless of how he performs.... Mets' Jose Butto: Struggles with command
Butto (0-1) took the loss Tuesday, allowing two runs on four hits and six walks over 4.2 innings against Washington. He struck out one. Butto had control issues once again Tuesday, walking six batters in 4.2 frames, but he managed to limit the Nationals to just two runs and took the loss. The 25-year-old has struggled in both of his spot starts this season with a 3:10 K:BB over 9.2 innings. Considering he hasn't given the Mets any reason to keep him on the big league roster, Butto will likely be optioned back down to Triple-A once Justin Verlander (shoulder) returns from the IL, but the former might be needed for one more start, which could come Sunday against Atlanta.... Mets' Jose Butto: Joining big-league rotation
The Mets recalled Butto from Triple-A Syracuse on Tuesday, and he's in line to start or serve as a bulk reliever in the team's series opener versus the Nationals, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Butto was optioned to Triple-A just eight days ago, but he'll be able to rejoin the big club in fewer than the minimum 15 days because the Mets placed reliever Edwin Uceta (ankle) on the 15-day injured list in a corresponding move. The rookie right-hander acquitted himself well in his first start with the big club April 16 in Oakland, covering five innings and allowing one earned run in a no-decision. Butto tentatively lines up for a two-start week -- he's in line to take the hill again Sunday in Atlanta -- but he could head back to the minors immediately after that outing with ace Justin Verlander (shoulder) likely to return from the IL in the first week of May.... Mets' Jose Butto: Sent down to Triple-A
Butto was optioned to Triple-A Syracuse by the Mets on Monday, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. Butto pitched well on Sunday while allowing just a run against the Athletics over five innings, but he's sent down to provide a fresh arm in the bullpen. Edwin Uceta takes his place on the roster. Butto will likely be an up-and-down option for the Mets throughout the 2023 campaign.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Allows one run in no-decision
Butto gave up one run on five hits and four walks in a no decision versus the Athletics on Sunday. He struck out two. Butto supplied the Mets with a solid effort after he stepped in to pitch on short notice. The 25-year-old showed some struggle with his command, throwing just 43-of-83 pitches for strikes but he did induce a 50 percent ground ball rate and was able to limit the damage overall. Butto will likely be optioned back to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday and could be a candidate for another call up if the Mets' rotation faces any more injuries.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Will start Sunday against A's
Mets manager Buck Showalter announced after Saturday's game that Butto will get the start Sunday against the Athletics in place of Max Scherzer (side/back), Mike Puma of the New York Post reports. Scherzer's start is being moved back three days because of lingering soreness in his back and side, so it'll be Butto on the bump. Butto made two starts with Triple-A Syracuse before being promoted Saturday morning, and should be fully stretched out while getting a chance to face one of the weaker MLB lineups Sunday.... Mets' Jose Butto: Candidate for NYM rotation
Butto is a candidate to join the Mets' rotation on the club's west coast road trip, which begins Friday in Oakland, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The trip runs through April 23 and also includes matchups with the Dodgers and Giants. DiComo notes the Mets have been discussing adding a starter to give every other member of the rotation an extra day of rest during the swing out west, which doesn't include any scheduled off days. Butto, 25, has pitched to a 1.86 ERA and 8:5 K:BB in 9.2 innings (two starts) this season with Triple-A Syracuse. He was scratched from his next scheduled start there Friday, presumably in anticipation of a promotion to the big leagues.... See More ... See Less -
Mets' Jose Butto: Impresses in spring start
Butto gave up a run on zero hits and two walks over 1.2 innings in Saturday's split-squad game against the Marlins, striking out four straight batters. The run crossed the plate after he'd left the game in the second inning. Butto touched 97 mph with his fastball, and while the 24-year-old right-hander isn't viewed as an elite prospect, he did post solid numbers between Double-A and Triple-A in 2022 before making his big-league debut in late August. The Mets have plenty of rotation depth, but if injuries thin the ranks, Butto could be a factor later in the year if he continues his development and can add a reliable curveball to his fastball-changeup arsenal....
