Player Outlook
Julio Rodriguez followed up with his excellent rookie season with an even more productive sophomore season excelling in all five scoring categories on his way to finishing as the 8th most valuable fantasy player in standard formats in 2023. Rodriguez was the only player in the American League to hit at least 30 homers, both score and drive in over 100, while also stealing more than 30 bags while Acuna Jr bested him in every category overall. That said, the youngster is still prone to slumps. He hit below .250 in 3 of the 6 months and just 3 of his homers and 21 of his RBIs came in high leverage situations. A monster second half got him to his final numbers, and he really caught his stride once he was left in the second spot of the lineup behind Crawford's on base percentage. You should expect more of the same from Rodriguez in 2024 with fewer slumps in between bursts of awesomeness as he continues to mature as a hitter.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Slight tweaks in mechanics

Rodriguez, who went 0-for-2 in his Cactus League debut Saturday against the Athletics, noted after the game that he's made slight changes to his stance and swing since last season, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. Rodriguez logged only three innings in his first spring appearance, and he won't be back on the field until Tuesday following a team off day Monday. However, the talented outfielder already began displaying some of the subtle modifications he's made since the end of last season, namely reducing a slight crouch he previously went into after a pitcher released the ball and developing what he feels is a more fluid swing that's reminiscent of the one he flashed in his early minor-league days. "I feel like I'm pretty honest into how I feel, into how I do things," Rodriguez said. "And once I feel that something's not working, I feel like I'm always trying to get it better."

Now fully healed, the 23-year-old All-Star is set to return to Cactus League play without any limitations.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Likely to join lineup Saturday

Mariners manager Scott Servais said that he expects Rodriguez (hand) to play in Saturday's Cactus League game against the Athletics, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. According to Shannon Drayer of Seattle Sports 710 AM, Rodriguez will take some swings in the batting cage and possibly on the back fields of camp Wednesday as he continues to ramp back up following a bout with left hand inflammation. Rodriguez was also able to play catch in the outfield Tuesday, so wearing a glove on the injured hand apparently isn't too bothersome for the 23-year-old.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Continues improving Tuesday

Rodriguez (hand) played catch in the outfield with Ichiro Suzuki on Tuesday and is feeling "much, much better" according to manager Scott Servais, MLB.com reports. Rodriguez also did some batting cage work and echoed his manager's sentiments, saying in passing that he was feeling "all good" from the minor inflammation on the back of his left hand. Servais added that he felt Rodriguez, who engaged in intense training this offseason, was still on target for a potential Cactus League debut by the weekend, adding he had trust in the team's medical staff to give the green light to the star outfielder at the appropriate time.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Shakes off pitch to elbow

Rodriguez was hit by a 91.3-mph slider around the elbow area in the sixth inning of Friday night's loss to the Rangers, but he remained in the game after being evaluated, the Associated Press reports. Rodriguez took the plunking from Rangers starter Dane Dunning and was in clear discomfort immediately thereafter. He was evaluated by both manager Scott Servais and team trainers and was determined to be OK, but the star outfielder's bumps and bruises are piling up at an inopportune time of year -- in addition to Friday's hit-by-pitch, Rodriguez also took a ball off his left hand during an at-bat Wednesday against the Athletics and underwent precautionary X-rays.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Joins 30-30 club

Rodriguez went 4-for-5 with a two-run home run, a double and an additional run scored in Monday's 8-5 extra-innings loss to the Angels. • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Two hits in return to action

Rodriguez (foot) went 2-for-4 with a double in a loss to the Mets on Friday. Rodriguez was back in the lineup and starting in center field after missing Tuesday's and Wednesday's games against the Athletics with nerve irritation in his foot. The brief down time didn't do anything to cool off the outfielder's scalding hot bat, as he produced the only multi-hit effort of the night for Seattle and his 14th such tally in the last 23 games overall. Rodriguez pushed his average and OPS to .288 and .831, respectively, with Friday's production, the highest either of those figures have been since April 8.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Likely to play this weekend

Mariners president of baseball operations Jerry Dipoto said in an interview on 710 ESPN Seattle on Thursday that he's optimistic Rodriguez (foot) would return to the lineup this weekend versus the Mets, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Rodriguez has missed each of the last two games with a nerve issue in his left foot and had been set to have the foot further examined. The team doesn't seem to have any concern that it could be a nagging issue, though, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect to be without the star outfielder much longer. Rodriguez finished August with a 1.198 OPS and seven home runs.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Out of lineup Wednesday

Rodriguez (foot) is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Athletics. Just as manager Scott Servais suggested earlier in the day would be the case, Rodriguez will hit the bench for the series finale while he manages a nerve issue in his left foot. Per Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times, Rodriguez said he plans to get his foot further examined, though the star outfielder described those upcoming tests as precautionary. The Mariners are off Thursday, so Rodriguez could have a chance at returning to the lineup Friday versus the Mets if his foot shows some improvement.

  • Mariners' Julio Rodriguez: Not expected to start Wednesday

Mariners manager Scott Servais said that Rodriguez (foot) is not part of the initial lineup he wrote up for Wednesday's game against the Athletics, but that could change leading up to the game's 4:10 p.m. ET start time, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Rodriguez was scratched from the lineup ahead of Tuesday's 3-1 loss due to a nerve issue in his left foot, but he's feeling better after treatment and could be added to the lineup Wednesday if he shows Servais he's ready during a pregame warmup. The Mariners have an off day Thursday, so they could give Rodriguez some extra rest and bring him back for Friday's series opener with the Mets.
