Gomez loses his spot on the 40-man roster in favor of Alfonso Rivas, who was claimed off waivers from the Angels. The 25-year-old Gomez has slugged 69 home runs over the last two seasons in the minors but has also struck out at a 33.1 percent clip over that time. Even with the swing-and-miss concerns, Gomez could draw interest on waivers with his power and relative youth.
Gomez was optioned to Triple-A Memphis by the Cardinals on Thursday.
Gomez was sporting a weak .589 OPS through 35 plate appearances this spring in the Grapefruit League. He racked up 39 homers in 120 games last year between Double-A and Triple-A, putting him in line to likely make his MLB debut at some point in 2023.

Signed to a minor-league deal last winter after washing out with the Rays, Gomez showed a lot of promise in the minors during his first year in the St. Louis organization. Over his 501 plate appearances between Triple-A Memphis and Double-A Springfield, Gomez slashed .294/.371/.624 with a franchise minor-league record 39 home runs. That immense power production put the 24-year-old back on the prospect radar, and it comes as no surprise that the Cardinals are choosing to protect him from December's Rule 5 draft by adding him to the 40-man roster. Gomez is still likely to open the 2023 season at Triple-A, barring a big spring training in which he hits his way on to the Cardinals' Opening Day roster.

After being released by the Rays in October, Gomez caught on with the Cardinals in November and has emerged as one of baseball's breakout prospects in 2022. The 23-year-old will receive a well-deserved appointment to the Cardinals' top affiliate after he tortured Texas League pitching to the tune of a .321/.398/.705 slash line while slugging 23 home runs and chipping in six stolen bases across 256 plate appearances. However, Gomez has struck out at an elevated 35.2 percent clip, so he could struggle to maintain his power production against more advanced Triple-A pitching if he's unable to show an improvement in his contact rate.

Gomez slugged his 16th homer of the season Tuesday and is how hitting .339/.403/.826 across 30 games for Double-A Springfield.
That 1.229 OPS is certainly eye-opening, but it's worth keeping in mind that Gomez -- who's leading the minors in home runs -- is striking out at a 31 percent clip, which means it's going to be awfully tough for him to hit anywhere close to .300 (never mind .339) in the big leagues. Indeed, his numbers have predictably been sinking recently, as Gomez has hit just .156/.270/.375 over his last eight games. This is an interesting prospect with big-time power, but Gomez (who batted .171 in Double-A last year) hasn't suddenly developed into the baseball god that his surface numbers may suggest.

Only four of his nine homers have come in the favorable home park in Springfield, with the other five coming in Arkansas, which played as a pitcher's park in 2021. He became a free agent after spending seven years in the Rays organization and then signed a minor-league contract with the Cardinals. A year ago, Gomez struck out at a 38.2 percent clip at Double-A, and this year he has cut that to 22.4 percent, albeit in a small sample. He was a prospect of note a few years ago after impressing at Low-A, and he's not so old that he should be ignored in dynasty leagues.

Despite the modest sample, it's an impressive spring stint for the 22-year-old, whose 2019 tenure at High-A Charlotte represents his highest professional stop to date. The pair of round trippers is particularly noteworthy for Gomez, who worked this past offseason on adding upper-body strength and who already slugged a total of 35 minor-league homers across 241 games in the 2018 and 2019 campaigns. Despite the reassignment, the outfielder will still have a chance to continue honing his craft in back-field games -- and potentially even more Grapefruit League contests -- due to the delayed start of the 2021 minor-league season.
