  • Astros' Nick Hernandez: Back to Triple-A

The Astros optioned Hernandez to Triple-A Sugar Land following Friday's game against Baltimore, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. The Astros recalled Hernandez from Triple-A Sugar Land on Tuesday. • Astros' Nick Hernandez: Optioned to Triple-A

Hernandez was optioned to Triple-A Sugar Land on Sunday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. No corresponding move was announced, but the Astros are expected to have a fresh arm in the clubhouse soon to replace Hernandez in the bullpen. Hernandez worked 3.2 innings in relief of Spencer Arrighetti on Saturday, allowing just one run on three hits while striking out five. He should get another big-league opportunity before long.

  • Astros' Nick Hernandez: Traded to Houston

The Padres traded Hernandez to the Astros on Tuesday in exchange for cash, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Hernandez made his MLB debut in 2023 with San Diego, allowing four runs in three innings across two appearances. He re-signed with the team on a minor-league deal during the offseason and has since posted a 1.90 ERA and 1.21 WHIP across 23.2 innings at Triple-A El Paso. He'll now return to the organization that drafted him back in 2016 and could earn a call back up to the big leagues if he continues to find success in Houston's farm system.

  • Padres' Nick Hernandez: Back with Padres as NRI

Hernandez signed a minor-league contract with the Padres on Friday that includes an invitation to spring training. Hernandez elected free agency after losing his spot on the Padres' 40-man roster back in November, but he's now back with the club as a non-roster invitee. The 29-year-old was knocked around during his brief time in the majors in 2023 but held a 3.84 ERA and 82:21 K:BB over 61 innings between Double-A San Antonio and Triple-A El Paso.

  • Padres' Nick Hernandez: Loses roster spot

The Padres outrighted Hernandez to Triple-A El Paso on Monday. San Diego dropped Hernandez from the 40-man roster to clear a spot for right-handed reliever Jeremiah Estrada, who was claimed off waivers from the Cubs. Hernandez racked up 82 strikeouts and notched seven saves over 61 innings between El Paso and Double-A San Antonio in 2023, but he didn't impress during his brief time in the big leagues with San Diego in September. He worked three innings across two appearances and gave up four earned runs on three hits and four walks while striking out five.
