  • Astros' Zack Short: First MLB homer since 2023

Short went 1-for-3 with a solo home run during Sunday's 5-1 loss to Texas. Short notched his first long ball with the Astros in his 10th game with the team, tagging Nathan Eovaldi for a solo shot in the sixth inning. The round tripper was Short's first in the big leagues since 2023, as he went homerless in 88 plate appearances with three different teams during 2024. He's slashing .286/.348/.524 since being called up July 2.

  • Astros' Zack Short: Back on bench

Short is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Guardians. Short had started at shortstop in each of the past four games, going 4-for-13 with two doubles, one walk, three RBI and two runs. Mauricio Dubon will get the nod at shortstop Wednesday, but the Astros may have room for both players in the middle infield on a fairly consistent basis until Jeremy Pena (rib) returns from the 10-day injured list.

  • Astros' Zack Short: Collects trio of hits

Short went 3-for-3 with a double, one RBI, a run scored and a walk in Sunday's 5-1 victory over the Dodgers. Short garnered his second consecutive start at shortstop and made the most of it, notching his first three-hit performance since June 21, 2023 when he was a Tiger. The 30-year-old journeyman joined the Astros on July 2 after slashing .211/.356/.402 with 12 homers over 73 Triple-A games. Short will likely be in the mix for occasional appearances in the Houston infield while Jeremy Pena (rib), Brendan Rodgers (oblique) and Luis Guillorme (hamstring) all remain on the injured list.

  • Astros' Zack Short: Key knock in first start

Short went 1-for-2 with a double and two RBI on Saturday against the Dodgers. Short made his debut with the Astros on July 2 and drew his first start Saturday while hitting ninth. He began the scoring for Houston with a two-RBI double in the third inning. Even with Jeremy Pena (rib) sidelined, Short isn't likely to see consistent playing time moving forward.

  • Astros' Zack Short: Selected to active roster

The Astros selected Short's contract from Triple-A Sugar Land on Wednesday, Brian McTaggart of MLB.com reports. Short has spent the entire season in Triple-A, slashing .211/.356/.402 across 320 plate appearances. He'll now join the big-league roster to replace the injured Luis Guillorme (hamstring), though Short isn't expected to see much playing time. Yordan Alvarez was transferred to the 60-day IL to clear a 40-man spot.

  • Astros' Zack Short: Inks NRI deal with Houston

The Astros signed Short to a minor-league contract Monday that includes an invitation to spring training, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Short accrued 88 plate appearances between the Mets, Red Sox and Atlanta in 2024, slashing just .129/.282/.171. He will provide utility depth in the minors for Houston.

  • Braves' Zack Short: Outrighted to Triple-A

Short cleared waivers Saturday and was sent outright to Triple-A Gwinnett. Short was dropped from Atlanta's 40-man roster Thursday after he put up a .517 OPS through 69 plate appearances with the big-league squad. The 29-year-old has already switched teams twice this year after being DFA'd by the Mets and Red Sox, but he will remain within the organization this time around.

  • Braves' Zack Short: Booted from 40-man roster

Atlanta designated Short for assignment Thursday. Short's opportunities in Atlanta were few and far between, and he did little with what he was given, producing just a .478 OPS in 29 games. It's possible that the 29-year-old will draw some interest on waivers due to his defensive versatility.

  • Braves' Zack Short: Seeing little playing time

Short is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Padres. Short picked up three consecutive starts at shortstop to begin July, but he hasn't returned to the lineup since with Orlando Arcia returning to action July 5 and avoiding a stint on the injured list due to an abscessed tooth. Expect Short's starting opportunities to be few and far between while Atlanta is at full strength in the infield.

  • Braves' Zack Short: Retreats to bench Thursday

Short is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Cubs. Austin Riley (side) remains out of the lineup for a 10th consecutive game, but after starting each of the previous nine games in Riley's stead, Short will give way to Luke Williams at third base Thursday. Atlanta is still seemingly viewing Riley as day-to-day, so Short's run of regular playing time at the hot corner could come to an end as soon as this weekend in Pittsburgh.

  • Braves' Zack Short: Filling in for injured Riley

Short will start at third base and bat ninth in Wednesday's game against the Cubs. Short will draw a ninth consecutive start at the hot corner while Austin Riley (side) remains day-to-day. The 28-year-old has delivered a solid .345 on-base percentage over his prior eight starts, but he's provided little fantasy value with a .208 average, zero home runs or stolen bases and two RBI and runs during that stretch. He'll fall back into a light role once Riley is cleared to return to the lineup.

  • Red Sox's Zack Short: Removed from 40-man roster

The Red Sox designated Short for assignment Wednesday. Short has been swapped off the 26-man active roster in favor of utility man Romy Gonzalez (wrist), who was reinstated from the 10-day injured list. He'll also lose his spot on the 40-man roster, as Short had no minor-league options remaining and will thus have to be subjected to the waiver process before potentially heading to the Red Sox's top affiliate in Worcester. Short played in just two games for the Red Sox, going 0-for-7 with four strikeouts.

  • Red Sox's Zack Short: DFA imminent

The Red Sox will designate Short for assignment on Wednesday, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Short will be kicked off the 40-man roster just a week after Boston acquired him from New York. The 28-year-old played in just two games for the Red Sox, going 0-for-7 with four strikeouts. Romy Gonzalez (wrist) will be reinstated from the IL to take Short's spot on the active roster.

  • Red Sox's Zack Short: Shipped to Boston

The Red Sox acquired Short from the Mets on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. Short had been designated for assignment but has now found a new home. The utility infielder is out of minor-league options, so he will join the Red Sox's 26-man active roster.

  • Mets' Zack Short: Removed from 40-man roster

Short was designated for assignment by the Mets on Friday. Short is clearing out as J.D. Martinez is added to the Mets' active roster. The 28-year-old utility player had received just 12 plate appearances this month with the big club, picking up one hit. It's possible he'll draw some interest from a team seeking defensive versatility.

  • Mets' Zack Short: Makes Opening Day roster

Short will begin the season on the Mets' 26-man roster, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The 28-year-old infielder has a strong spring at the plate, batting .308 (12-for-39) with a homer, three steals and more walks (seven) than strikeouts (six). Short offers defensive versatility to the Mets' bench, seeing action in more than 30 games at second base, third base and shortstop for the Tigers in 2023, but his most significant role to begin the current campaign is likely to come at the hot corner as a platoon partner for Brett Baty. Short's career .575 OPS over 450 plate appearances in the majors doesn't suggest he'll have much fantasy value, but he has flashed some modest power and speed in the minors.

  • Mets' Zack Short: Claimed by Mets

The Mets claimed Short off waivers from the Tigers on Monday. Short, 28, is a career .174/.266/.308 hitter over 450 plate appearances in parts of three seasons at the big-league level. He has experience at shortstop, second base, third base and a little in the outfield. Short will compete for a utility job in spring training.

  • Tigers' Zack Short: Productive in win

Short went 1-for-2 with a three-run home run, two walks and a stolen base in Saturday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Angels. Short had gone 0-for-11 across his previous seven games, though he had a steal in that span. The infielder made his impact early Saturday, with his homer coming in the second inning. He's up to a career-high seven long balls while adding 33 RBI, 16 runs scored, five steals, nine doubles and a .215/.299/.361 slash line over 234 plate appearances in a part-time role.

  • Tigers' Zack Short: Starting at shortstop

Short (forearm) will bat ninth and play shortstop Saturday against the White Sox. Short hadn't seen the field since getting hit by a pitch Wednesday against the Yankees, though he doesn't have an everyday role at the moment, so his absence may not have been injury-related. He hasn't done much to stake a claim for more at-bats down the stretch, posting a .442 OPS in the last month and a .645 OPS on the year.

  • Tigers' Zack Short: Belts solo homer

Short went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and a walk in Thursday's extra-inning win over the Yankees. Short put up the first run of the contest in the fifth inning, swatting a solo shot to left field off Clarke Schmidt. The shortstop hit three long balls over his first 29 at-bats this season but has gone deep just three times across 76 at-bats since. Short had been struggling prior to Thursday, going 2-for-23 with no RBI over his previous 14 games while working mostly in a bench role.
