White Sox's Prelander Berroa: Hit hard in Triple-A debut
Berroa (shoulder) recorded one out and was charged with five earned runs on four hits and one walk Friday in Triple-A Charlotte's 6-5 loss to Memphis.
Berroa wasn't able to make any Cactus League appearances after March 11 due to a right shoulder injury, but despite missing out on a spot on the White Sox's Opening Day roster, he was deemed healthy enough to begin the season in the Triple-A bullpen. The 23-year-old right-hander could eventually build momentum for a promotion to the big leagues and might fill a key late-inning role for the White Sox down the road, but no call-up should be viewed as imminent after his disastrous showing Friday in his season debut. He spotted just 12 of his 21 pitches for strikes and served up two home runs en route to taking the loss in relief.

White Sox's Prelander Berroa: Resuming throwing Friday
Berroa (shoulder) has been cleared to resume throwing Friday, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports.
Berroa had a right shoulder issue crop up earlier this week, but everything checked out fine and the reliever is "on pace to crank it up," per White Sox manager Pedro Grifol. It sounds like the hard-throwing reliever could have a chance to be ready for Opening Day, which would be a pleasant surprise. If healthy, Berroa should be in the late-inning mix for the White Sox.

Berroa quickly returned to the minors after making his major-league debut in late July, but he'll rejoin the big-league club for the final game of the season. The move means Berroa won't be available in the Rule 5 draft. While Berroa is now a step closer to his big-league debut, it's unlikely he pushes for a spot on the Opening Day roster. He's yet to reach the Triple-A level, and while he struck out 35.6 percent of opposing batters in nine starts for Double-A Arkansas, he also walked 16.8 percent, more than double the major-league average.

The Mariners acquired Berroa from the Giants on Wednesday in exchange for utility man Donovan Walton.
The 22-year-old Berroa has made four starts at High-A Eugene this season, posting an 0.68 ERA and 16:6 K:BB across 13.1 innings. He'll likely report to the Mariners' High-A affiliate in Everett.
