According to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com, Slaten experienced some fatigue after his most recent appearance in Milwaukee on Wednesday, when he took the loss and a blown save after giving up two unearned runs in one-third of an inning. The right-hander will be eligible to be reinstated June 13, and he could be ready to rejoin the Red Sox at that point since his injury doesn't appear to be overly serious.

Slaten entered the middle of the seventh inning with a runner at first base and induced a double-play grounder to squelch the threat. He then got three harmless groundouts in the eighth. Slaten endured a three-game hiccup at the end of April/beginning of May (six runs, 2.1 innings), but the right-hander has been on point since. Slaten (0-2) was charged with the loss and a blown save in Thursday's 4-2 defeat to the Blue Jays, allowing three runs on three hits and one walk with no strikeouts in one inning.
One game after giving up the game-ending run, albeit one that was unearned in extra innings, Slaten's showing Thursday was far less excusable. The right-hander gave up a go-ahead three-run home run to Vladimir Guerrero in the eighth inning, taking his first blown save of the season. Slaten now holds a 5.56 ERA, 1.15 WHIP and 9:5 K:BB over 11.1 innings this season, though he's been charged with an earned run in just two of his 13 outings.
Slaten picked up the save in Monday's 4-2 win against the White Sox, pitching a clean inning with one strikeout.
Slaten efficiently secured the win, requiring only 12 pitches -- 10 of which were strikes -- to retire the side in order. Aroldis Chapman pitched the eighth inning, as he was called upon to face the top of the Chicago lineup. However, this outing shows that Slaten could be in line for more save opportunities as Boston manager Alex Cora may look to deploy Chapman in the highest leverage spots. Although Slaten owns a 4.00 ERA, his performance has been much better under the hood, pitching to a 1.59 FIP, 0.56 WHIP and 8:1 K:BB across nine innings.

Slaten faced little resistance, retiring the side on just 11 pitches (eight strikes) for his second save of the season. Aroldis Chapman remains the favorite for save opportunities out of the Boston bullpen, although the left-hander can cede the occasional chance based on certain matchups. The right-handed Slaten, who now holds a 5.14 ERA, 0.71 WHIP and 5:1 K:BB through seven innings, was called upon to face three right-handed batters Wednesday.
Slaten struck out one and didn't allow a baserunner in a scoreless ninth inning to earn the save Thursday against the Rangers.
Closer Aroldis Chapman entered for the eighth inning with the game tied 2-2, as the lefty-hitting Corey Seager was batting leadoff, opening up the ninth inning for Slaten after Boston took the lead. The right-hander recorded two saves and 13 holds with a 2.93 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 58:9 K:BB across 55.1 innings as a rookie last season, and he's one of the Red Sox's top relief arms again in 2025, even if Chapman is expected to be the primary closer early on.

With incumbent closer Kenley Jansen on the injured list, Slaten was able to notch his first save since March 31. The 27-year-old Slaten had an encouraging rookie season out of the Red Sox bullpen, pitching to a 2.93 ERA, 1.01 WHIP and 58:9 K:BB in 55.1 innings with six wins, 13 holds and two saves. The 37-year-old Jansen is set to become a free agent, so Slaten could find himself in the mix for saves next season.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Sunday that he will "mix and match" at closer with Slaten and Chris Martin following the season-ending injury to Kenley Jansen (shoulder), Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports.
Slaten has looked sharp since returning from his elbow injury last month, posting a 1.69 ERA and 12:2 K:BB over 10.2 innings covering 11 appearances. Cora indicated Sunday that he envisions the Rule 5 pick as a potential long-term closer option, and the 27-year-old could get a look in the role this week. Jansen is an impending free agent, so Boston will be looking for a new closer next season.
