Atlanta gave Spencer Schwellenbach $1 million after drafting him out of Nebraska in the second round in 2021 and he had Tommy John surgery right after the draft. He put up good numbers in 2023 as a 23-year-old in the lower levels, but his stuff ticked up in 2024, with his fastball going from a 93-94 mph pitch to a 95-96 mph offering. He generated groundballs over 55 percent of the time at High-A and Double-A and was surprisingly summoned to the big-league rotation after just two starts at Double-A. There's nothing about Schwellenbach's arsenal or command that would cap his short-term potential, but even as an older prospect, it's quite the jump in competition to the majors after logging only 13 innings above High-A, so there could be some understandable bumps in the road.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: One bad inning Monday

Schwellenbach (1-3) took the loss Monday against the Cardinals, giving up four runs on eight hits over five innings. He struck out six without walking a batter. The rookie didn't pitch badly overall, but he lost focus in the third inning and allowed all four of the runs against him thanks to five hits and a wild pitch. It was the first time in five big-league starts that Schwellenbach hasn't issued a free pass, and he's gone three straight outings without serving up a homer, providing hope that he can provide some stability to the back of Atlanta's rotation. The 24-year-old right-hander lines up to make his next start at home this weekend against the Pirates.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Nabs first career win

Schwellenbach (1-2) earned the win Tuesday, allowing one run on three hits and two walks across six innings against the Tigers. He struck out seven. Schwellenbach logged a second straight quality start and set a career high in strikeouts en route to his first big-league win. The lone run against Schwellenbach came in the sixth inning, when Riley Greene hit a leadoff triple and scored on a Gio Urshela single later in the inning. While Schwellenbach owns a 4.98 ERA through four starts with Atlanta, his ERA is inflated by a six-run shelling at the hands of the the Red Sox on June 5. He's lined up to face the Cardinals in St. Louis on Monday.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Set to start Wednesday

Schwellenbach is listed as Atlanta's starting pitcher for Wednesday's game against the Orioles in Baltimore. He will be matched up against former college teammate Cade Povich in a battle between two of the top pitching prospects in both organizations. Schwellenbach hasn't looked sharp in his first two major-league outings, allowing a total of nine runs over 9.2 innings in losses to the Nationals and Red Sox. The young righty's future still looks bright, but he'll be difficult to trust for fantasy purposes Wednesday in a tough matchup.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Makes pro debut at Single-A

Schwellenbach (elbow) covered 1.2 no-hit scoreless innings for Single-A Augusta in his season debut Thursday, striking out one while working around two walks. Schwellenbach threw 26 of his 42 pitches for strikes in the appearance, the first of his professional career after he was selected by Atlanta in the second round of the 2021 First-Year Player Draft. He didn't pitch in either of the 2021 and 2022 seasons after undergoing Tommy John surgery shortly after being drafted, but he reported to spring training at full health and received the green light to bypass the rookie-ball level entirely.

  • Braves' Spencer Schwellenbach: Throwing again

Schwellenbach (elbow) announced Monday via his personal Twitter account that he's been cleared to play catch off flat ground. Schwellenbach's light catch session Monday at extended spring training marked his first time throwing since undergoing Tommy John surgery last August. Due to the timing of his procedure along with the fact that Atlanta plans to develop him as a starter, the 2021 second-round pick may not be cleared to make his professional debut until the final month of this season or potentially 2023.
