Cowser went 1-for-3 with a stolen base in Wednesday's 4-2 win over the Twins. Cowser's power has come back down with no home runs over his last three games, but he's still hitting well, going 3-for-11 in that span. The outfielder is slashing .400/.429/.800 with four homers, three steals, 15 RBI, eight runs scored and six doubles over 49 plate appearances. Cowser's continued success will likely mean that Austin Hays remains in a bench role, though manager Brandon Hyde has had no trouble resting his other outfielders to keep Cowser in the lineup so far.... Orioles' Colton Cowser: Homers again Sunday
Cowser went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in Sunday's 6-4 win over the Brewers. Cowser has gone 10-for-23 (.435) with four homers and 12 RBI over the last six games, which corresponds with him joining the lineup on a full-time basis. He initially broke in by unseating Austin Hays from the starting job in left field, but Cowser also has one start each in center and right during his recent hot stretch. He's batting .441 with a 1.445 OPS through 38 plate appearances, and while those numbers are sure to drop, he's proving exactly why he won a crowded battle for one of the Orioles' last roster spots out of spring training.... Orioles' Colton Cowser: Continues torrid run
Cowser went 2-for-3 with a solo home run, a double and a walk in Friday's 11-1 loss to the Brewers. Cowser was responsible for two of the Orioles' five hits off Freddy Peralta -- he poked an opposite-field double in the first inning before leading off the fourth with a home run, his third long ball in his last two games. The 24-year-old Cowser has gotten off to a tremendous start this year, going 13-for-27 (.481) with a 1.537 OPS, 12 RBI and a stolen base through his first 27 at-bats. While he opened the year as Baltimore's fourth outfielder, Cowser has certainly earned a regular starting role moving forward.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Slugs first two career homers
Cowser went 3-for-5 with two home runs, a double and four total RBI in a 9-4 extra-inning win against the Red Sox on Thursday. Cowser belted a solo shot in the fifth inning to give the Orioles their first run, and he added a big three-run blast in the 10th to break open the contest en route to a Baltimore victory. The long balls were the first of Cowser's major-league career, and they showcased his power potential after he went deep 17 times in 399 plate appearances in Triple-A last year. The 24-year-old has started 2024 in fine form, slashing .458/.462/.917 with 11 RBI, four runs and a stolen base through 11 contests.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: One steal, two RBI in win
Cowser went 1-for-4 with two RBI, a walk, one stolen base and one run scored in Wednesday's 7-5 win over the Red Sox. Cowser is gaining traction as the primary starter in left field with Austin Hays off to an ice-cold start in 2024. Cowser has hit safely in five of the last six games, going 7-for-16 (.438) with six RBI in that span. He crushed the competition in Grapefruit League play and has taken advantage of his early opportunity in the regular season. For now, it's a platoon situation between Cowser and Hays, with the former on the strong side of it.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Drives in four
Cowser went 2-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI in Tuesday's 7-1 win over the Red Sox. Cowser drove in the Orioles' first three runs Tuesday, driving in Cedric Mullins with a two-out double in the second inning before adding two more RBI with a second two-bagger in the fourth. Cowser would add a fifth RBI with a sacrifice fly in the eighth. The 24-year-old outfielder has started over Austin Hays in three of Baltimore's last four games against right-handed pitching. Cowser's certainly run with the opportunity, going 7-for-15 with four doubles to start the year. After a rough showing in his first big-league stint last season, Cowser is starting to show why he was regarded as one of the top prospects in a loaded Orioles system.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Confirmed for Opening Day roster
Cowser was informed Sunday that he made the Orioles' Opening Day roster, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. The writing was on the wall when Baltimore sent down Heston Kjerstad and Kyle Stowers on Friday, and Cowser's place on the big club has now been confirmed. Cowser hit just .115 over 26 games in his first taste of the big leagues last season, but he put on a show during spring training with a 1.174 OPS in 49 plate appearances. The 24-year-old isn't likely to open the campaign with a regular spot in the lineup, but he could certainly hit his way into more playing time.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Retools swing
Cowser retooled his swing in the offseason after a difficult 2023, Jon Meoli of TheBaltimoreBanner.com reports. That work has been noticed, drawing praise from manager Brandon Hyde early in spring training. Over his first five Grapefruit League games, Cowser has gone 3-for-8 with two home runs and five RBI. Cowser still has work to do to win a roster spot, but the early results are encouraging. He hit just .115 with a .434 OPS and a 28.6 percent strikeout rate over 77 plate appearances in the majors last year. Cowser is among a group of three to five players competing for a maximum of two bench spots in the Orioles' outfield.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Heads back to Triple-A
The Orioles optioned Cowser to Triple-A Norfolk on Sunday. Cowser was brought up from Triple-A when rosters expanded to 28 men Friday, but he'll head back down to the minors with the Orioles bringing Aaron Hicks (back) back from the 10-day injured list. The 23-year-old Cowser is slashing just .115/.286/.148 in the majors this season and likely would return to the Orioles only for depth purposes.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Recalled from Triple-A
Cowser was recalled from Triple-A Norfolk on Friday. Cowser is back with the big club as rosters expand. The top prospect really struggled in his initial go-round with the Orioles, managing a lowly .434 OPS over his first 77 plate appearances. It seems unlikely that he'll be given regular playing time in the final month.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Returns to Triple-A
The Orioles optioned Cowser to Triple-A Norfolk on Monday. Cowser remains one of Baltimore's top prospects, but he posted only a .434 OPS over his first 77 plate appearances at the big-league level, so Baltimore decided to send him back to the minors to open up a roster spot for the returning Aaron Hicks. Cowser owns a .996 OPS at the Triple-A level this year, so if he can get back on track at the plate he could rejoin the Orioles before the campaign comes to a close.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: On bench again Thursday
Cowser remains out of the lineup Thursday against the Blue Jays. Cowser is slashing just .098/.254/.118 through his first 63 major-league plate appearances and hasn't appeared in the Orioles' starting lineup since Monday. Austin Hays, Ryan McKenna and Ryan O'Hearn are starting across the outfield in Thursday's series finale at Toronto.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Not in Tuesday's lineup
Cowser is out of the lineup for Tuesday's game at Toronto. The lefty-hitting Cowser will take a seat Tuesday with southpaw Hyun Jin Ryu on the mound for the Blue Jays. Ryan McKenna will start in center field and bat eighth.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Takes seat Sunday
Cowser is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. Though Cowser's path to playing time in the outfield opened up a bit with Aaron Hicks (hamstring) recently joining Cedric Mullins (groin) on the injured list, the rookie still finds himself on the bench for the second time in five games. Cowser is hitting just .106 in 47 at-bats since getting called up from Triple-A Norfolk on July 5 and could be at risk of a demotion as soon as one of the two injured outfielders is activated.... Orioles' Colton Cowser: On bench versus lefty
Cowser is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Phillies. Cowser had started in three of the Orioles' last four games, but the lefty-hitting outfielder will hit the bench Monday while southpaw Cristopher Sanchez takes the hill for Philadelphia. Considering that Cowser is batting just .111 through his first 36 at-bats in the big leagues, his opportunities to play against right-handed pitching could soon take a hit as well if he's unable to turn things around in the near future.... Orioles' Colton Cowser: On bench versus lefty
Cowser is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Dodgers, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Cowser had started each of the last three games at a different outfield spot and went 0-for-8 with three walks and two runs, bringing his batting average down to .111 since he was called up from Triple-A Norfolk on July 5. The lefty-hitting Cowser will retreat to the bench Wednesday while the Dodgers bring southpaw Julio Urias to the hill, and until he begins to heat up at the plate, Cowser could find himself in more of a part-time role in the Baltimore outfield. Cowser did at least see his playing-time outlook improve Wednesday with Cedric Mullins (groin) landing on the injured list, though Aaron Hicks may be first in line to replace Mullins in the everyday lineup.... Orioles' Colton Cowser: Remains on bench
Cowser will sit Saturday against the Marlins, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Cowser started four consecutive games after getting called up for his MLB debut on July 5, but he's since sat for three straight contests. This particular off day comes against a lefty (Braxton Garrett), so it's no surprise to see Cowser head to the bench, though the previous two came against right-handers. Aaron Hicks will get another start in right field.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Takes seat Sunday
Cowser is out of the lineup for Sunday's game at Minnesota, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. Cowser started all four games since receiving his first big-league callup Wednesday, and he'll hit the bench Sunday after going 4-for-13 with four walks, two RBI and four runs in his first 18 plate appearances. Austin Hays, Cedric Mullins and Anthony Santander will start across the outfield while Aaron Hicks serves as the designated hitter.... See More ... See Less -
Orioles' Colton Cowser: Gets aboard twice in debut
Cowser went 1-for-3 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored in Wednesday's 6-3 win over the Yankees. Cowser sparked the Orioles' sixth-inning rally with an RBI single and scored on a Jordan Westburg triple. That makes it a successful debut for Cowser, who has a short-term path to playing time while Austin Hays (hip) is out. Where Cowser fits in the long term is to be determined, though he can play all over the outfield and will likely get plenty of chances to do so if he can force the issue with his bat.... See More ... Orioles' Colton Cowser: In LF, batting seventh in MLB debut
Cowser is starting in left field and batting seventh versus the Yankees on Wednesday in his major-league debut, Nathan Ruiz of The Baltimore Sun reports. Cowser could wind up bouncing all over the outfield for the Orioles, but he'll play left field in his debut with Austin Hays (hip) still banged up. The rookie earned a promotion after putting together a sparkling .330/.459/.537 batting line with 10 homers and 40 RBI through 257 plate appearances with Triple-A Norfolk.... See More ... See Less
