  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Contributes to win

Mayer went 1-for-4 with a double and an RBI in Friday's 5-4 win over the Rays. Mayer had a run-scoring double for the second straight game, both of which helped the Red Sox come back after the Rays had taken a lead. He's set to become the primary second baseman after the team activated third baseman Alex Bregman from the injured list Friday. Mayer, who is batting .225 through 38 games, has hit safely in three straight games, going 4-for-11 with two doubles, two RBI and two runs scored.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Set to be primary second baseman

Manager Alex Cora said Friday that Mayer will get the majority of the playing time at second base moving forward, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. The 22-year-old's roster spot appeared in question with Alex Bregman (quadriceps) returning from the injured list Friday, but the Red Sox will keep Mayer in the majors and shift him to the middle infield. The rookie has seen most of his playing time thus far at the hot corner, but he has yet to get on track at the plate with a .234/.272/.421 slash line and 29.8 percent strikeout rate through 37 games. Mayer is starting at the keystone and batting seventh Friday versus the Rays.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Survives roster decision

Mayer will remain on the Red Sox roster after the team optioned David Hamilton to Triple-A Worcester on Thursday to clear a spot for Alex Bregman (quadriceps), Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Bregman's return Friday was going to present a roster crunch, but it's Mayer who will stay in the majors. The 22-year-old top prospect will likely occupy the strong side of a platoon at second base with Romy Gonzalez. Mayer had a key run-scoring double Thursday during Boston's three-run seventh inning.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Sitting out third straight

Mayer is again absent from the lineup for Monday's contest against the Rockies. The Red Sox are facing a lefty (Austin Gomber) for the third straight day. The lefty-swinging Mayer has been out of the lineup for all three contests, though he did receive two plate appearances off the bench in Sunday's win over the Nationals. Mayer is 4-for-22 with a 7:0 K:BB early on versus southpaws at the big-league level. Nate Eaton is again at third base Monday.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: On bench against lefty again

Mayer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Nationals. Mayer will stay on the bench for the second game in a row while the Nationals send another southpaw to the mound in Shinnosuke Ogasawara. Nate Eaton will replace Mayer at third base and bat leadoff.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Back from bereavement leave

The Red Sox reinstated Mayer (personal) from the bereavement list Monday. Mayer will start at third base and bat sixth in the Red Sox's series opener with the Reds. After being recalled from Triple-A Worcester on Friday when Mayer was deactivated, infielder Nick Sogard will head back to the minors to clear room for Mayer's return to the 26-man active roster. Before stepping away from the team and missing three games while tending to the personal matter, the 22-year-old rookie slashed .208/.262/.429 with four home runs and seven RBI through his first 84 big-league plate appearances. At least until Alex Bregman (quadriceps) returns from the injured list, Mayer is poised to serve as the Red Sox's primary third baseman.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: On bereavement list

The Red Sox placed Mayer on the bereavement list Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Mayer will be away from the team temporarily as he tends to personal matters. Nick Sogard was recalled from Triple-A Worcester in a corresponding move. Per Christopher Smith of MassLive.com, Mayer is expected to return Monday.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Three-hit effort in Tuesday's loss

Mayer went 3-for-4 with a triple, one RBI and one run scored in Tuesday's 3-2 extra-inning loss to the Angels. Mayer went 0-for-11 with one walk and four strikeouts over his previous four games. He had an RBI single in the 10th inning to briefly put the Red Sox ahead Tuesday, but they ultimately lost in the bottom of the frame. Mayer continues to receive steady playing time versus right-handed pitchers, but this was his first multi-hit effort since June 11 versus the Rays. He's batting .216 with a .718 OPS, four home runs, seven RBI, 12 runs scored, three doubles, one triple and no steals over his first 26 major-league games.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Idle against lefty Sunday

Mayer is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Yankees. The Red Sox have faced left-handed starting pitchers in all three games of the series with the Yankees, and Mayer has been on the bench for two of them. The rookie will cede third base to Abraham Toro on Sunday as the Red Sox look to get some extra right-handed bats in the lineup.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Collects first MLB hit

Mayer started at third base and went 2-for-4 with a run scored in Sunday's 5-1 loss to Baltimore. Mayer, who went hitless in four at-bats during his MLB debut Saturday, picked up his first hit in the majors on his first at-bat of the day. The left-handed hitter singled to the opposite field. He later pulled a double in the eighth inning and scored his first MLB run. With the Red Sox describing Alex Bregman's quadriceps injury as "significant" and "pretty severely strained," Mayer is line for regular turns at third base.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Called up, debuting Game 2

The Red Sox selected Mayer's contract from Triple-A Worcester, and he will start at third base and bat sixth in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Mayer was informed earlier in the day that he was getting called up to the majors to take the spot on the 26-man roster vacated by Alex Bregman (quad), who was placed on the 10-day injured list. Mayer will make his major-league debut in Saturday's nightcap and is expected to be used across multiple positions in the infield. He has an .807 OPS with two steals, nine homers and 43 RBI across 193 plate appearances in Triple-A this season.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Set to be called up by Boston

Mayer is expected to be called up by the Red Sox on Saturday, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Mayer was not included in Triple-A Worcester's lineup against Durham on Saturday and was seen getting congratulations from his teammates in the clubhouse, per Katie Morrison-O'Day of MassLive.com. Mayer has spent most of his time at shortstop in Triple-A this season, though he's played 10 games at second base and four at the hot corner, and that infield versatility should give him a chance at regular playing time with Alex Bregman (quadriceps) facing a stint on the injured list. Per the official Red Sox broadcast, Mayer could be available to make his major-league debut in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against the Orioles. The 22-year-old prospect is slashing .265/.342/.465 with two steals, 31 runs scored, nine home runs and 43 RBI in 193 plate appearances in Triple-A this season.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Getting starts at second base

Mayer started at the second base twice in the last three games for Triple-A Worcester. Mayer has moved around the infield for the WooSox but has mostly defended at shortstop -- he's made seven starts at second, four at third and 39 at short. That he's made two starts in the last three games is noteworthy, because the Red Sox recently began giving Kristian Campbell practice reps at first base. If Campbell adapts to the entirely unfamiliar position, he could serve as the team's primary fill-in for the injured Triston Casas (knee), which would open up second base, potentially for Mayer or David Hamilton.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Opening season in minors

The Red Sox plan to assign Mayer to Triple-A Worcester prior to Thursday's season opener versus the Rangers, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reports. Though manager Alex Cora didn't dismiss the possibility of Mayer breaking camp with the big club even in the latter stages of spring training, the 22-year-old infielder always appeared likely to begin the season at Triple-A. Mayer will be joined at Worcester by another elite prospect in outfielder Roman Anthony, while second baseman Kristian Campbell will be the first of the Red Sox's "Big Three" prospects to reach the big leagues. Though Mayer impressed with a .983 OPS in Grapefruit League play, the Red Sox will likely want the shortstop to find some success at the Triple-A level early on in the season before giving him the call to the majors. Mayer could also get some more exposure to second base and third base at Worcester in an effort to increase his versatility and potentially expedite his arrival to the majors.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Healthy for spring training

Mayer (back) took batting practice Wednesday and appears to be a full participant for the start of spring training, Christopher Smith of MassLive.com reports. Mayer finished the 2024 season on Triple-A Worcester's 7-day injured list while he dealt with a lumbar strain, but he was cleared to resume baseball activities early in the offseason and doesn't look to be operating under any restrictions during his first big-league camp. The 22-year-old isn't a serious candidate to make the Opening Day roster, but a midseason debut is possible if he displays improved durability with Worcester while maintaining the improved plate skills he demonstrated with Double-A Portland. Before getting promoted to Worcester and being placed on the IL soon after, Mayer slashed .307/.370/.480 with eight home runs, 13 stolen bases and a 19.7 percent strikeout rate over 335 plate appearances at Double-A.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Goes back on Triple-A IL

Triple-A Worcester will place Mayer (hip) on the 7-day injured list Tuesday, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer first suffered a hip/glute injury in late July while playing at Double-A Portland, and despite getting promoted to Worcester more than a week ago, he has yet to be cleared for his Triple-A debut. Before getting the call to Worcester, Mayer slashed .307/.370/.480 with eight home runs and 13 steals in 77 games at Portland.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Back in lineup Friday

Mayer (back) is starting at shortstop and batting second in Friday's game for Double-A New Hampshire, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer returns to the lineup Friday after missing four games due to back discomfort. The 21-year-old prospect is slashing .307/.371/.479 with 25 doubles, 13 stolen bases, seven home runs and 36 RBI over 299 plate appearances in Double-A this season.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Nursing back issue

Mayer was scratched from Monday's game against Double-A New Hampshire due to back tightness, Alex Speier of The Boston Globe reports. Mayer felt tightness in his back during batting practice, however, the issue doesn't sound serious. Speier notes that Mayer is expected back in the starting nine for Tuesday's clash.

  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Raking in Double-A

Mayer has hit safely in the first seven games for Double-A Portland. He's slashing .357/.387/.500 with one home run, five RBI, two steals and seven runs scored. Mayer is healthy after a 2023 season ended early due to a shoulder injury that he said he was feeling long before he was shut down in August. It's reasonably expected that the highly regarded prospect will make his MLB debut in 2025, but this season may not be out of the question. Given the season-ending injury to Trevor Story (shoulder), it's not hard to envision Mayer getting the call later in 2024.
... See More ... See Less
  • Red Sox's Marcelo Mayer: Shoulder no longer an issue

Mayer said Wednesday that he's now "ready to go" after his 2023 season ended due to a left shoulder injury, Gabrielle Starr of the Boston Herald reports. Mayer wound up missing the last month of the minor-league season due to left shoulder inflammation, an injury which he admitted Wednesday had been bothering him for a while before he was shut down. It could be at least partly to blame for why the 21-year-old slashed just .189/.254/.355 following a midseason promotion to Double-A Portland. Mayer is likely headed back to Portland to start 2024 as he looks to regain his prospect momentum.
