Reds manager David Bell wasn't specific on Encarnacion-Strand's symptoms but mentioned he hadn't been feeling well ahead of the series in Seattle. Steer is 1-for-14 over the last four games but still has a .992 OPS on the season.

Steer, who normally bats seventh against right-handers, was moved up to cleanup, switching spots with a slumping Jeimer Candelario. Steer put the Reds ahead early with a long ballt off Jose Quintana in the first inning, but Cincinnati's offense wasn't able to manufacture much else Friday. The 26-year-old utility man has homered twice with nine RBI through his first seven games.

Steer stepped to the plate in the top of the 10th inning Monday against Connor Brogdon and hit a go-ahead 383-foot home run to give Cincinnati the lead for good.
