  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Covers first base

Steer started at first base for an unavailable Christian Encarnacion-Strand (illness) in Wednesday's 5-1 loss to Seattle. He went 0-for-3.

Steer was one of eight Reds in the order to go hitless against Mariner pitching. Elly De La Cruz's second-inning home run off Bryce Miller was the lone offense mustered by Cincinnati. Reds manager David Bell wasn't specific on Encarnacion-Strand's symptoms but mentioned he hadn't been feeling well ahead of the series in Seattle. Steer is 1-for-14 over the last four games but still has a .992 OPS on the season.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Bats cleanup Sunday

Steer went 0-for-3 with a pair of walks, a stolen base and a run scored in Sunday's 11-4 win over the White Sox.

Steer, who normally bats seventh against right-handers, was moved up to cleanup, switching spots with a slumping Jeimer Candelario. It's unclear if the move is permanent or a temporary adjustment until Candelario, who had two hits Sunday, gets back on track. Steer was predominantly a middle-of-the-order bat and led the Reds in home runs and RBI in 2023.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Knocks in two in win

Steer went 1-for-5 with a double and two RBI in Monday's 10-8 win over the Brewers.

Steer, fresh off being named the NL Player of the Week, doubled home two runners during the Reds' six-run fourth inning. He's up to 14 RBI, tied for the MLB with lead with Teoscar Hernandez, who has played three more games than Steer. Cincinnati's primary left fielder is slashing .378/.465/.757 with seven extra-base hits and two stolen bases through 10 games.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Homers again, steals bag

Steer went 2-for-3 with a three-run home run, one additional run scored and a stolen base in Saturday's 9-6 win over the Mets.

Steer seems to be emerging as a leader on this young Reds team, both in the clubhouse and on the stat sheet. He currently leads the club in batting average (.448), homers (three) and RBI (12). He also has two steals in as many attempts and several clutch hits in the early going, including two go-ahead homers this week. The 26-year-old has started in left field exclusively but will likely end up moving around as he did last season.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Homers in defeat

Steer went 1-for-3 with a solo homer and two walks during Friday's 3-2 loss against the Mets.

Steer put the Reds ahead early with a long ballt off Jose Quintana in the first inning, but Cincinnati's offense wasn't able to manufacture much else Friday. The 26-year-old utility man has homered twice with nine RBI through his first seven games.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Cracks go-ahead grand slam

Steer went 2-for-5 with a double, home run, four RBI and two runs in Monday's win over the Phillies.

Steer stepped to the plate in the top of the 10th inning Monday against Connor Brogdon and hit a go-ahead 383-foot home run to give Cincinnati the lead for good. It was Steer's first career grand slam. The second-year Red looks to build upon his strong rookie campaign last season in which he slashed .271/.356/.464 with 23 home runs and 86 RBI.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Opens in outfield

Steer started in left field and went 2-for-3 with a double, a stolen base, two RBI and two runs scored in Thursday's 8-2 win over the Nationals on Opening Day.

Steer was part of a productive lower-half of the order, which combined to go 8-for-19 and was responsible for all eight runs and RBI. He has eligibility at multiple positions, but the offseason plan was to use him primarily in the outfield. Steer led the team in home runs (23) and RBI (86) last season while stealing a fantasy-helpful 15 bases.

  • Reds' Spencer Steer: Handling second base

Steer started at second base and went 1-for-4 in Wednesday's spring game against the Rangers.

Steer made a third consecutive start at second base in the wake of Matt McLain's shoulder injury, which will land him on the injured list to start the season. The Reds have other options for the keystone, including Jonathan India and Santiago Espinal, who was acquired via trade Wednesday. Steer had been scheduled to see most of his time in the outfield this season, but McLain's injury and third baseman Noelvi Marte's 80-game suspension could alter the outfield plans for Steer.
