Atlanta opted to keep Hernandez around for a bit after he was initially called up from Gwinnett to serve as the 27th man for Monday's doubleheader against the Padres, but he'll now head back to the minors to make room for Thursday's starter, AJ Smith-Shawver, who was called up from Triple-A in a corresponding move. Hernandez has allowed one unearned run over two relief innings with the big club this season.
Hernandez (forearm) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Gwinnett.
Hernandez is currently on the 60-day injured list with right forearm inflammation and isn't eligible to be activated until the final weekend of the 2023 regular season. Hernandez had Tommy John surgery in early February and will be out until the 2023 season, Kyle Glaser of Baseball America reports.
One of Atlanta's better relief pitching prospects, Hernandez reached Triple-A last season, so he could have made his big-league debut this year if he were healthy. Given the timing of the surgery, he may be limited for most or all of spring training in 2023.
