Top Christian Roa News

  • Christian Roa: Hits open market

    Roa elected free agency Friday.

The 26-year-old was outrighted to Triple-A Jacksonville by the Marlins on Thursday, and he was able to reject that assignment since he had been outrighted previously. Roa made two scoreless appearances for Miami during the 2025 season and had a 2.83 ERA over 60.1 innings at Triple-A.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Outrighted to Triple-A

Roa cleared waivers Thursday and was sent outright to Triple-A Jacksonville.

Roa pitched three scoreless innings for the Marlins this season but spent most of his time in Triple-A, where he posted a 2.83 ERA and 1.10 WHIP over 60.1 frames. Despite his strong performance, he'll now lose his place on Miami's 40-man roster and aim to earn it back during spring training.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Sent down Monday

The Marlins optioned Roa to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday.

Roa will return to Triple-A following a two-day stint in the big leagues with Miami activating Tyler Phillips (personal) from the paternity list. The 26-year-old right-hander made his lone appearance during his latest stay with Miami during Sunday's 2-0 loss to the Tigers, tossing a scoreless inning out of the bullpen.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Brought back up to big club

Miami recalled Roa from Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday.

Roa's return to the Marlins was spurred by fellow reliever Tyler Phillips landing on the paternity list. Phillips is allowed up to three days away from the team, so Roa's time with the big-league squad may be short. Roa has just one appearance with Miami this year, allowing one hit and one walk with three strikeouts over two scoreless innings against Philadelphia on Sept. 6.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Sent back to minors

The Marlins optioned Roa to Triple-A Jacksonville on Monday.

Roa was with the big club for just a couple days, tossing two scoreless innings in his lone appearance. He's clearing out to make room on the active roster for Janson Junk (elbow), who is back from the 15-day injured list to start Monday's game versus the Nationals.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Selected from Jacksonville

The Marlins selected Roa's contract from Triple-A Jacksonville on Saturday.

Roa has enjoyed a breakout campaign at Jacksonville this season, turning in a 2.83 ERA and 1.10 WHIP alongside a 61:28 K:BB through 57.1 innings. The 26-year-old's performance will earn him a spot in Miami's bullpen as the replacement for the injured Freddy Tarnok (ankle). Roa will be making his MLB debut whenever he gets into a game.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Tosses scoreless frame Saturday

Roa (shoulder) tossed a scoreless inning, allowing one walk while striking out a batter in Saturday's 7-6 win over the Cardinals in Grapefruit League action.

Roa ended the 2024 season on the 60-day injured list with the Reds after suffering a right shoulder strain. The right-hander was claimed off waivers by the Marlins in November and he has now officially left his shoulder injury in the past. Roa has yet to make his MLB debut after being selected in the second round of the 2020 MLB First-Year Player Draft by the Reds and he'll likely start the 2025 season with Triple-A Jacksonville.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Pushed off 40-man

The Marlins outrighted Roa (shoulder) to Triple-A Jacksonville on Friday.

Miami claimed Roa off waivers from Cincinnati on Nov. 1, but he's now been stripped of his 40-man roster spot after just 15 days with the organization. The 25-year-old righty spent all of last season in Triple-A, where he posted a 5.55 ERA and 1.76 WHIP across 48.2 innings before going down with a sprained shoulder. He'll likely need to show some improvement at Jacksonville before getting a chance to make his MLB debut.

  • Marlins' Christian Roa: Claimed by Miami

The Marlins claimed Roa (shoulder) off waivers from the Reds on Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports.

Roa posted a 5.55 ERA and 47:30 K:BB over 48.2 innings with Triple-A Louisville in 2024 before going down in August with a right shoulder sprain. He did not have surgery, but it's unclear whether Roa will be ready for the start of spring training.

  • Reds' Christian Roa: Goes on 60-day IL

The Reds recalled Roa from Triple-A Louisville and placed him on the 60-day injured list with a right shoulder sprain.

Roa hadn't pitched at Triple-A since Aug. 2 and landed on Louisville's 7-day IL before the Reds called him up and placed him on the 60-day IL for the purpose of opening up a spot on the 40-man roster. As a result of the transaction, the 25-year-old's season officially comes to an end. He turned in a 5.55 ERA and 47:30 K:BB over 48.2 innings covering four starts and 19 relief appearances this season with Louisville.

  • Reds' Christian Roa: Joins 40-man roster

The Reds selected Roa to their 40-man roster Tuesday.

Putting Roa on the 40-man roster prevents him from being scooped up by another team in next month's Rule 5 Draft. However, the 24-year-old righty will likely need to show significant improvement before getting the call to the majors after posting a 5.43 ERA and 1.77 WHIP across 61.1 frames with Triple-A Louisville in 2023.

Roa is rehabbing an undisclosed injury in extended spring training, Doug Gray of RedsMinorLeagues.com reports.

The 23-year-old righty pitched 34.2 innings at High-A last season and will likely return to that level once healthy. He could reach Double-A by the end of the year.

  • Reds' Christian Roa: Recovered from hernia

Roa, the Reds' 2020 second-round pick (No. 48 overall), missed last fall's instructional league while recovering from a sports hernia surgery but is fully healthy now, Bobby Nightengale of The Cincinnati Enquirer reports.

Roa regained his 96 mph fastball in live batting practice this spring, after starting to lose some of that velocity in his last two collegiate outings before the draft. He's expected to begin his minor league career at Low-A Daytona in May.
