Player Outlook
Kansas City has achieved a commendable amount of success in developing internal position-player talent, even during this recent run of poor overall on-field results. It looked like Michael Massey might join that lineage when he put up an .882 OPS with Low-A Quad Cities in 2021 and a .312/.371/.532 slash line between Double-A Northwest Arkansas and Triple-A Omaha in 2022. The early MLB returns, though, are not so promising. Massey ranked 166th in on-base percentage (.274) out of the 168 big-league hitters who made more than 450 plate appearances in 2023. He connected for 15 home runs and stole six bases but finished in just the 36th percentile in average exit velocity and 49th percentile in sprint speed. It would come as a surprise -- a welcome surprise given his cheap draft-day cost -- if Massey were to pull off a fantasy breakout this year at age 26.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Getting breather against LHP

Massey isn't in the Royals' lineup Friday against the Rockies. Massey owns an .836 OPS in 32 plate appearances against left-handers this season, but he'll step out of the lineup Friday as the Royals load their lineup with right-handed bats versus southpaw Kyle Freeland. • Royals' Michael Massey: Sitting out Wednesday

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Returns from injured list

The Royals activated Massey (back) from the 10-day injured list Monday. He'll serve as the Royals' designated hitter and No. 5 batter in Monday's game against the Marlins. Massey has been limited to just 29 games this season because of a pair of back-related absences. He responded well to a recent pain-killing injection, however, and is ready to rejoin the Royals after completing a five-game rehab assignment with Triple-A Omaha this past week. There's certainly risk in another aggravation of the back issue, but Massey is worth picking up in fantasy leagues where available given how well he had been hitting before getting hurt (.835 OPS in 110 plate appearances with Kansas City).

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Ready for rehab assignment

Massey (back) will begin a rehab assignment Tuesday at Triple-A Omaha. On the shelf with a low back ligament sprain, Massey received an injection May 31 and appears to have responded favorably. He was cleared to resume baseball activities early last week and has checked out fine after steadily increasing the intensity of his hitting and running over the last several days. The Royals haven't determined how long Massey's rehab assignment will last, but he may only need two or three games with Omaha to get his timing back at the plate before potentially making his return from the 10-day injured list as soon as this weekend.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Visits specialist

Manager Matt Quatraro said the Royals will wait to see how Massey's back responds to the treatment before determining when he will head to the minors for a rehab assignment. For now, the 26-year-old infielder remains without a clear return timetable, and he isn't eligible for activation until Tuesday.

  • Royals' Michael Massey: Activated, starting Friday

Massey (back) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list and is starting at second base Friday versus the Orioles, The 26-year-old opened the season on the injured list due to a back strain but is back with the Royals after he posted a 1.123 OPS over an eight-game rehab assignment. Massey could split playing time at the keystone with veteran Adam Frazier, but both hit left-handed so a traditional platoon isn't an option. Manager Matt Quatraro is more likely to ride the hot hand between them.

Massey (back) is expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Anne Rogers reports. Nick Loftin was optioned to Triple-A Omaha on Thursday and Massey is expected to be activated in a corresponding move ahead of the Royals' weekend series against the Orioles. Massey has been out all season with a lower-back injury but slashed .382/.417/.706 with two home runs in eight rehab games between Omaha and Double-A Northwest Arkansas. • Royals' Michael Massey: Beginning assignment Friday

Massey (back) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Northwest Arkansas on Friday. Massey has been sidelined since mid-March due to a lower-back strain, but his back has held up well during simulated games at the Royals' spring training complex, and he's now been cleared to resume action in a competitive setting. It's unclear how many games the Royals want the 26-year-old infielder to play in the minors, but a return to Kansas City doesn't seem far away.

The 26-year-old infielder has since resumed playing in sim games at extended spring training in Arizona, and he appears to be progressing well enough to test himself in an uncontrolled setting this week.
