Player Outlook
After two seasons limited by wrist injuries, Alex Kirilloff finally put together a productive season in the majors that could cement him as the starting first basement - if he can stay healthy. Kirilloff's season started slow as he didn't reach the majors until May as he worked his way back from August 2022 wrist surgery. He hit .270 with 11 home runs and a .793 OPS despite missing five weeks with a right shoulder strain. He aggravated the injury in the playoffs and had offseason surgery to repair the labrum in his right (non-throwing) shoulder. He's expected to be ready for the start of spring training. Kiriloff showed decent power as both his .173 ISO and above-average Sweet Spot % (40.2%) were encouraging despite worries the wrist issues may have permanently sapped his power. He had limited exposure to left-handed pitching (56 PA) as he may limited to platoon duty until he gets more experience. He'll also need to improve his fielding as he's not a strong glove in the outfield and struggled at first base (a key error in the playoffs). He's shown enough promise in the minors and has a high enough pedigree (2016 first-round draft pick) that he could take a big leap if healthy.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Full strength as spring games begin

Kirilloff went 1-for-3 in Sunday's spring training loss to Boston as he looks fully healthy after offseason shoulder surgery. "He's in a lot better shape than we originally thought he was going to be in when the offseason started," manager Rocco Badelli stated, per Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic. Despite surgery in October to repair the labrum in his right shoulder, Kirilloff has played in the first two spring training games, which is a sign the team is confident in his health. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli told The Athletic that he doesn't view first base as a strict platoon since Carlos Santana is a switch hitter, meaning both could be in a lineup against righties. However, Kirilloff would likely play more DH in that scenario with Santana seen as the better glove at first base. It's still not clear how much Kirilloff will play against left-handed pitching or if he'll be used in the outfield.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Aims for start of spring schedule

Kirilloff (shoulder) is on track for live at-bats in February and hopes to be game-ready when the Twins' spring training schedule begins, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Kirilloff underwent surgery in October to repair the labrum in his right shoulder, but the operation wound up being less invasive than initially expected. He began hitting in January and has been ramping things up of late. Kirilloff projects as the starting first baseman assuming he's ready to roll Opening Day, but nothing is assured given his history of health issues.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: No tear in shoulder labrum

No labrum tear was discovered during Kirilloff's recent shoulder surgery, Dan Hayes of The Athletic reports. Kirilloff, accordingly, required a less invasive procedure than initially anticipated and seems to have a good shot of being fully recovered by the beginning of spring training next February. The 25-year-old battled right (non-throwing) shoulder issues in the second half of the 2023 regular season and was removed from the Twins' postseason roster before Game 4 of the ALDS because of renewed discomfort. When healthy, he put up a .793 OPS with 11 home runs across 319 plate appearances for the American League Central champions.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Set for shoulder surgery

Kirilloff will undergo surgery later this month to repair the labrum in his right shoulder, Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com reports. Kirilloff initially injured his shoulder in July and more recently had to be removed from the Twins' ALDS roster after suffering a setback. It's not clear at this point how long his rehab will take, but it wouldn't be a surprise if he's at least somewhat limited in spring training. It's yet another surgery for Kirilloff, who previously has had two different operations on his wrist.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Off roster due to shoulder injury

Kirilloff was removed from the Twins' ALDS roster Wednesday because of a right shoulder injury, Bobby Nightengale of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Kirilloff missed all of August with a right shoulder strain and the injury seems to have resurfaced in some capacity here in the 2023 postseason. Twins manager Rocco Baldelli declined to get into specifics but noted that the 25-year-old first baseman and corner outfielder was having trouble taking full swings. Byron Buxton (knee) has been activated in a corresponding move ahead of ALDS Game 4 against the Astros on Wednesday night at Target Field.

Kirilloff (undisclosed) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday ahead of ALDS Game 4 against the Astros. There are no further details yet, but Kirilloff must have suffered a fairly serious injury in the Twins' Game 3 loss, as he will now officially be out through the ALCS. Byron Buxton (knee) has replaced Kirilloff on Minnesota's active roster for what remains of the best-of-five ALDS.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Riding pine Wednesday

Kirilloff is not in Wednesday's lineup against the Reds. The Twins have not faced a lefty starter in over a week, so this seems like a scheduled rest day for Kirilloff with another righty (Hunter Greene) on tap. Kirilloff has started in six of the last eight games against opposite-handed pitching. Donovan Solano is manning first base and hitting third.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Sitting Saturday

Kirilloff will sit Saturday against lefty David Peterson and the Mets. Kirilloff had only just returned Friday from a shoulder injury which kept him out for over a month, so it's possible he would have sat Saturday regardless of who was on the mound for the Mets. Donovan Solano will get the start at first base.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Returns from IL

The Twins reinstated Kirilloff (shoulder) from the 10-day injured list Friday, Brandon Warne of Access Twins reports. Kirilloff has been on the injured list since July 30 with a strained right shoulder. The 25-year-old swung a hot bat in six rehab games with Triple-A St. Paul, going 12-for-27 with two homers and six RBI, and he was slashing .259/.305/.593 in 59 plate appearances following the All-Star break before getting injured. Joey Gallo (foot) was placed on the injured list in a corresponding move.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Needs more time on rehab assignment

Manager Rocco Baldelli said Sunday that Kirilloff (shoulder) isn't expected to be activated from the 10-day injured list during the Twins' three-game series in Cleveland that begins Monday, Phil Miller of the Minneapolis Star Tribune reports. Kirilloff has been on the shelf since July 30 with a right shoulder strain, but he looks to be closing in on a return to 100 percent health. He began a rehab assignment at Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday and has been dialed in at the dish through his first three games, going 5-for-13 with a home run, a double and two RBI. Kirilloff hasn't experienced a setback with the shoulder, but Baldelli said that he wants the 25-year-old to pick up some more at-bats in the minors in light of his month-long layoff. Kirilloff could be a candidate to return from the IL next weekend, at which point he may settle into the strong side of a platoon at first base with Donovan Solano.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Beginning assignment Wednesday

Kirilloff (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A St. Paul on Wednesday, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. Kirilloff and Byron Buxton (hamstring) will both be making their first rehab appearances Wednesday and figure to return early in September. Kirilloff was slashing .259/.305/.593 since the All-Star break when he landed on the injured list July 30.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Gets cortisone shot in shoulder

Kirilloff recently received a cortisone shot for his strained right shoulder, Aaron Gleeman of The Athletic reports. He will rest for a few days in order to let the shot take effect before then ramping back up his baseball activities. Kirilloff is a week removed from landing on the 10-day injured list with a shoulder issue which had been bothering him for about a week. He's eligible for activation Wednesday but clearly is going to need more time than that to make a full recovery.

  • Twins' Alex Kirilloff: Hits IL with shoulder injury

The Twins placed Kirilloff on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a right shoulder strain. According to Audra Martin of Bally Sports North, Kirilloff had been bothered by the shoulder for the past week and even sat out Wednesday's 8-7 loss to the Mariners because of the issue. After a team off day Thursday, Kirilloff returned to the lineup for the first two games of the Twins' series in Kansas City, but he didn't come out of Saturday's 10-7 loss feeling well and will now be deactivated as a result, per Do-Hyoung Park of MLB.com. Manager Rocco Baldelli is optimistic that Kirilloff will avoid a long-term absence, but with a little over two months left in the regular season, fantasy managers in redraft leagues may be best off cutting ties with the 25-year-old in favor of a healthier option on the waiver wire. While Kirilloff is on the shelf, the Twins will likely turn to Donovan Solano and Joey Gallo to pick up most of the starts at first base.
