Gurriel went 0-for-3 with two walks and a steal in Tuesday's loss to the Padres. Gurriel is now 3-for-3 on stolen base attempts this season after swiping eight bags with Houston last year. While the 39-year-old shouldn't be counted on as a steady source of speed, he's been productive at the plate, going 13-for-30 over his last eight games to boost his slash line to .289/.353/.430 with three home runs and 12 RBI through 136 plate appearances this season. The veteran infielder has gotten the majority of the starts at first base recently, with Garrett Cooper serving as DH, though Jesus Sanchez's return from the IL could cut into Gurriel's playing time.... Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Gets sixth straight start
Gurriel will start at first base and bat sixth in Sunday's game against the Angels, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. With Jorge Soler seeing more work in right field of late while the Marlins are without all of Jesus Sanchez (hamstring), Jazz Chisholm (toe) and Avisail Garcia (back), Gurriel has been able to claim more reps at first base while Garrett Cooper has served as Miami's designated hitter. Gurriel finds himself in the starting nine Sunday for the sixth consecutive contest.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Double, triple in loss
Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, an RBI and a run scored in Thursday's loss to the Rockies. Gurriel is now 10-for-16 with three extra-base hits (including two triples) in his last four games. He'd gone just 4-for-33 in his previous nine contests. The veteran first baseman is holding down a regular role for now as injuries in the outfield open up the DH spot for Garrett Cooper. Through 117 plate appearances this year, Gurriel is slashing a solid .299/.342/.458 with three home runs, 11 RBI and two stolen bases.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Collects four hits, steal
Gurriel went 4-for-4 with a triple, an RBI, two runs scored and a steal in Wednesday's 10-2 win over the Rockies. Gurriel delivered a two-out single in the fourth to drive home the Marlins' first run of the game. He followed that with a triple in the sixth inning. Gurriel has eight hits in the last three games, but just one of those went for extra bases. Gurriel's power disappeared last season and hasn't returned in 2023. However, his average is creeping back up and sits at .291. Gurriel also picked up his second steal of the season thanks to a rundown gone wrong for the Rockies.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Racks up three hits in loss
Gurriel went 3-for-4 in Tuesday's 5-4 loss to the Rockies. Gurriel has seen limited playing time since Garrett Cooper returned from an inner ear infection May 14. Over three games since that date, Gurriel has gone 4-for-10 with one RBI. It appears he'll remain in a reserve role as long as the Marlins' infield is healthy. For the season, the 38-year-old is slashing .263/.306/.384 with three home runs, nine RBI, eight runs scored and a stolen base through 108 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Getting start at first base
Gurriel will start at first base and bat seventh Wednesday against the Nationals, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Garrett Cooper will slide into the lineup as the designated hitter and Jorge Soler will play right field to open up a spot for Gurriel. The 38-year-old is sporting a .681 OPS with three home runs in 97 plate appearances on the season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Returns to bench with Cooper back
Gurriel is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Reds, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Gurriel had started 10 of the Marlins' last 11 games at first base, slashing just .175/.227/.300 with a home run, three RBI and two runs over that stretch. He'll likely see his playing time take a significant hit moving forward after the Marlins reinstated Garrett Cooper (ear) from the 10-day injured list Sunday and reinstalled him as their everyday first baseman.... Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Heads to bench Wednesday
Gurriel is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Diamondbacks, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Gurriel has been filling in as the primary first baseman while Garrett Cooper (ear) has been on the shelf, but the 38-year-old will get a breather for the series finale in Arizona while Luis Arraez spells him. While starting each of the Marlins' past eight games, Gurriel went 6-for-33 (.182 average) with a home run, two doubles, two runs and two RBI.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Goes yard in win
Gurriel went 1-for-6 with a solo home run in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Cubs. Gurriel took Hayden Wesneski deep to left to open up the scoring in the fifth inning. It was just his third home run of the year but his second RBI over his last three games. The 38-year-old has been a mainstay in the lineup since Garrett Cooper (ear) was put on the IL but hasn't put together a whole lot of run production. For the season, he slashing .270/.313/.432 with six extra base hits, seven RBI, eight runs and a 4:8 BB:K over 80 plate appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Filling in for Cooper
Gurriel will start at first base and bat third in Wednesday's game against Atlanta, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The 38-year-old will pick up his third start in four games, and he could be headed for regular playing time at first base in the short term after Garrett Cooper (ear) was placed on the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Even at his advanced age, Gurriel continues to make contact at a high rate, so he could make for a decent source of batting average while he's getting steady playing time. Fantasy managers shouldn't look to him for much power production, however.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Showcases power, speed
Gurriel went 2-for-4 with a solo home run and and a stolen base in Tuesday's loss against the Braves. Gurriel swiped his first bag of the 2023 season Tuesday, taking second base after hitting a single in the second frame. The first baseman also came through in crunch time, clubbing a solo home run in the top of the ninth that brought the Marlins to within three, but they were unable to build momentum and mount a comeback. Though Gurriel is used primarily as a bench option for Miami, he's worth a look in daily formats when in the starting lineup against left-handed pitching, considering his minuscule 9.1 percent strikeout rate in that split.... Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Makes fourth straight start
Gurriel will start at first base and bat fifth Wednesday against the Phillies, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. He'll be making his fourth straight start, with the lineup spot opening up by Garrett Cooper (upper leg) sitting out and Avisail Garcia (hamstring) missing his third consecutive game. Gurriel has recorded at least one hit in all six games he's played this season and is sitting on a .981 OPS.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Contract selected by MIA
Gurriel had his contract selected by the Marlins on Thursday. Gurriel signed a minor-league deal with Miami in early March and is positioned for a bench role to begin the 2023 season.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: To be used as bench bat
Marlins manager Skip Schumaker indicated Wednesday that Gurriel will primarily be used as a bat off the bench, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Schumaker did say that he feels comfortable deploying Gurriel against both righties and lefties but also went on to confirm that Garrett Cooper will remain the team's primary first baseman. There is very little fantasy appeal in the 2023 outlook of a 38-year-old reserve player who slashed just .242/.288/.360 across 584 regular-season plate appearances in 2022.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Expected to make Opening Day roster
Marlins general manager Kim Ng said Sunday that Gurriel "should be there on Thursday," implying his contract will be selected prior to the Marlins' season opener with the Mets that day, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. After drawing limited interest in free agency this winter, Gurriel settled for a minor-league deal with Miami in March and showed well enough in his limited time in the Grapefruit League to earn a spot on the Marlins' big-league roster. The 38-year-old struggled mightily in 2022 with a .242/.288/.360 slash line over 584 plate appearances, but he led all of baseball with a .319 average in 2021. Though he may be able to bounce back in the batting-average department in 2023 if he can stave off any major decline in the career-worst 12.5 percent strikeout rate he sported a season ago, Gurriel's advancing age, paucity of power and poorer team context with the move from Houston to Miami may limit his fantasy appeal largely to NL-only formats.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Not guaranteed to make roster
Gurriel is not a lock to make the Marlins' Opening Day roster, Barry Jackson and Craig Mish of the Miami Herald report. Jackson and Mish are hearing that the Marlins are currently leaning toward keeping both Jesus Sanchez and Bryan De La Cruz on the roster, leaving only one spot for Gurriel and Jose Iglesias. It's not clear whether Gurriel or Iglesias might have a leg up for a spot. Gurriel, 38, is just 2-for-16 at the plate so far this spring.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: To get reps at second, third base
Gurriel will be given reps at second and third base in addition to first base, Ely Sussman of FishStripes.com reports. Gurriel officially latched on with the Marlins on Friday, and while it's a minor-league contract, he's almost surely in line to make the Opening Day roster. The 38-year-old hasn't made a start at a position other than first base since 2019, but he has plenty of past experience at third and a little at second. Gurriel slashed only .242/.288/.360 for the Astros last season and isn't much of a fantasy option for 2023, even if he gains extra position eligibility.... See More ... See Less -
Marlins' Yuli Gurriel: Agrees to terms with Marlins
Gurriel signed a contract with Miami on Thursday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Rumors of a potential deal between the Marlins and Gurriel had been swirling around all offseason. Gurriel had been holding out for a major-league contract, and while the details of the deal are not yet known, the two sides were finally able to iron out an agreement. The veteran first baseman will turn 39 in June and slashed .242/.288/.360 during the regular season last year before spraining his right MCL in Game 5 of the World Series.... See More ... See Less -
Yuli Gurriel: Remains in touch with Miami
Gurriel (knee) and the Marlins remain in touch on a potential minor-league contract, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Gurriel had been holding out hope of scoring a guaranteed major-league deal, but it's pretty clear by now that such an offer is not coming his way. The 38-year-old first baseman slashed just .242/.288/.360 over 146 regular-season games with the Astros in 2022 before suffering a sprained right MCL in Game 5 of the World Series. He should be recovered from that injury at this point and still rates as a solid defensive player, but Gurriel doesn't offer much offensive upside steering into the 2023 campaign. He'll turn 39 in June.... See More ... See Less -
Yuli Gurriel: Still an option for Miami?
Gurriel (knee) could still be an option for the Marlins if he's willing to accept a minor-league contract, according to Craig Mish and Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald. Gurriel was said to be a target of the Marlins back in January, but he remains a free agent with spring training now fully underway. At last check in mid-February, the veteran first baseman was still holding out for a guaranteed major-league deal. He posted a rough .242/.288/.360 batting line over 146 games (584 plate appearances) with the Astros during the 2022 regular season and then suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee in Game 5 of the World Series. There doesn't seem to be a whole lot of present momentum toward Gurriel finding a new home.... See More ... See Less
