  • Mariners' Joey Krehbiel: Back in action at spring training

Krehbiel (neck) gave up three earned runs on two hits and one walk while striking out one over an inning of relief in Friday's 9-5 loss to the Cubs in Cactus League play. Krehbiel had been scheduled to make his third appearance of the spring Wednesday versus the Royals, but he was scratched from that outing two days later due to a neck strain. The veteran reliever was quickly able to move past the issue, but he was hit hard in his return to the mound Friday, with both of the hits he allowed leaving the yard. Krehbiel is attending camp as a non-roster invitee and looks like a long shot to win a spot in the Mariners' Opening Day bullpen.

Krehbiel (1-0) retired the only batter he faced and earned the win in Tuesday's 5-4 extra-inning win over the Angels. They took the lead in the 10th, and Shintaro Fujinami was able to preserve it. Krehbiel has given up one run over 2.1 innings across three appearances since he was called up when rosters expanded Friday. He will likely continue to feature mostly in a low-leverage role.

  • Orioles' Joey Krehbiel: Moves off 40-man roster

Baltimore designated Krehbiel for assignment Wednesday, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. The move clears room on the 40-man roster for Luis Torrens, whom the Orioles acquired from the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations. Krehbiel was relatively effective out of the Baltimore bullpen in 2022 with a 3.90 ERA over 57.2 innings over 56 appearances, but he wasn't a part of the Opening Day roster. He's posted a 2.00 ERA over nine innings with Triple-A Norfolk, and a team in need of bullpen help could show interest in the right-hander on the waiver wire or via trade.

  • Orioles' Joey Krehbiel: Gets back on track

Krehbiel has pitched 4.2 scoreless innings over his last five Grapefruit League outings. Krehbiel also has a 6:1 K:BB in that span. The right-hander was a solid part of the Orioles' strong bullpen last season, but he was torched for eight runs over his first two appearances this spring. Now that he's back on track, he should remain in contention for the Opening Day roster, though the Orioles still have a lot of trimming to do to their pitching staff.

  • Orioles' Joey Krehbiel: Shaky early in spring

Krehbiel has given up eight runs over 1.2 innings across his first two Grapefruit League appearances. Krehbiel's place in the Orioles' bullpen can't be considered safe, as the team has a high number of candidates for the rotation that could begin the year as relievers. The shaky start to the spring is a concern, but Krehbiel did fairly well in a setup role last season with a 3.90 GAA, 1.23 WHIP, five wins, one save and 10 holds across 57.2 innings. With Dillon Tate (elbow) out for the first month of the season, that could give Krehbiel a chance to make the roster anyway if he can improve over the rest of spring training.

The Orioles optioned Krehbiel to Triple-A Norfolk on Wednesday. • Orioles' Joey Krehbiel: Handed loss versus Boston

Krehbiel (5-5) took the loss Tuesday versus the Red Sox, allowing two runs on two hits and two walks over two-thirds of an inning. Krehbiel was charged with a run in the third inning as the Red Sox put together a six-run rally. The Orioles tied the game with five runs of their own in the fourth, but Krehbiel was charged with a run as the Red Sox shot back in the same frame and took the lead for good. An effective reliever for much of the season, the 29-year-old right-hander has hit a rough stretch of late. He's allowed nine runs on 10 hits and three walks over his last 5.2 innings spanning six appearances. Krehbiel is at a 3.90 ERA, 1.23 WHIP and 45:18 K:BB through 57.2 innings overall, and he's added a save and 10 holds.

  • Orioles' Joey Krehbiel: Takes fourth loss

Krehbiel (4-4) allowed two runs on two hits in one-third of an inning, taking the loss Wednesday versus the Blue Jays. Austin Voth pitched six innings of two-hit ball as the starter, but Krehbiel was the first of a trio of relievers that made the seventh frame a mess. He allowed two of the three batters he faced to get aboard, and Cionel Perez couldn't stop the bleeding after that. Since the All-Star break, Krehbiel has a 5.19 ERA, 1.73 WHIP and two holds through nine appearances. He's at a 2.81 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, 34:14 K:BB, nine holds and a save through 41.2 innings overall, but he's not in contention for late-inning usage on a regular basis.

  • Orioles' Joey Krehbiel: Notches first career save

Krehbiel earned a save against the Rays on Saturday, retiring the only batter he faced in the 11th inning. Regular closer Jorge Lopez covered the ninth and 10th innings, so the Orioles had to turn elsewhere after they took a two-run lead in the top of the 11th. Cionel Perez opened the frame and worked two outs around a walk, and Krehbiel was then brought in to face Luke Raley. The reliever retired Raley on five pitches to secure the first save of his big-league career. Krehbiel isn't likely to earn many more save chances given Lopez's effectiveness this season, but the former has been an important part of Baltimore's bullpen with a 2.25 ERA, 1.00 WHIP and 27:10 K:BB over 32 innings. He has seven holds and four wins to go along with the one save.
