  • Reds' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Taking seat Friday

Hayes is absent from the lineup for Friday's game in Minnesota.

Hayes is a woeful 3-for-47 with zero extra-base hits and zero RBI in his first 17 games this season. His defense at third base has helped keep him in the lineup most days, but the Reds will have no choice but to cut his playing time if Hayes' offense doesn't at least get to a passable level. Eugenio Suarez is at the hot corner Friday, and Nathaniel Lowe will serve as the designated hitter.

Hayes started the first two contests of the series versus the Halos and will take a seat for Sunday's finale with his hitless streak now extended to five games. Eugenio Suarez will step in at third base while Nathaniel Lowe receives a start at designated hitter.

  • Reds' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Hitting bench Sunday

Hayes is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Red Sox.

Hayes will give way to Eugenio Suarez at third base in the series finale after he started in the Reds' first two games of the season while going 0-for-7 with a run scored. While Hayes has produced at well-below-league-average levels at the plate each of the past two seasons, his exceptional defense at the hot corner should keep him in the lineup more often than not.

  • Reds' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Role unchanged by FA signing

Hayes is expected to remain the starting third baseman despite the Reds' signing free agent Eugenio Suarez on Sunday, Mark Sheldon of MLB.com reports.

The organization reunited with Suarez, who played mostly third base for Cincinnati from 2015 to 2021 prior to being traded in March of 2022. Recognizing Hayes' value as a fielder -- he won a second Gold Glove at the hot corner in 2025 -- the Reds plan to deploy Suarez as the primary designated hitter while also giving him occasional starts at both corner infield spots.

  • Reds' Ke'Bryan Hayes: Dealing with back injury

Hayes missed the last two games due to back soreness, Mike Petraglia of MLB.com reports. He did enter Thursday's 1-0 win over the Cubs as a defensive replacement in the ninth inning.

The back issue, which has bothered Hayes previously, cropped up during the Reds' series this week against the Cardinals. Cincinnati manager Terry Francona tried to get him time off then, but Spencer Steer came down with a neck injury. With Steer now back, Hayes can rest up. Francona said the third baseman, who's been managing the pain, could visit with a specialist by Monday. Sal Stewart served as the third baseman the last two games and presumably will continue to get the nod if Hayes misses more time.
