Player Outlook
A 31-year-old with a career 5.41 ERA who hasn't made a major-league start in over a year wouldn't ordinarily have any fantasy appeal. Erick Fedde, however, made the most of his time away from the majors, making 30 starts for the KBO's NC Dinos and pitching to a 2.00 ERA and 0.97 WHIP. Those numbers came with excellent supporting stats such as his 29.5 percent strikeout rate and 4.9 percent walk rate. A healthy dose of skepticism regarding those numbers is fair given the level of competition, but it's far from unheard of for pitchers to figure things out in Korea and return to some success stateside. Chris Flexen recorded a 3.01 ERA with similar strikeout and walk rates to Fedde in his lone KBO campaign in 2020 and then returned to post sub-4.00 ERAs in two straight seasons, while Merrill Kelly spent four years in Korea and returned to post a 3.80 ERA across five MLB campaigns. The White Sox will hope that Fedde can follow a similar path, and the fact that he reinvented his arsenal overseas (adding a sweeper and adjusting his grips on other pitches) gives reason to believe he has a chance.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Quality start against Texas

Fedde did not factor into the decision in Monday's 4-3 loss to the Rangers, allowing two runs on three hits and two walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out five. The veteran righty reached double-digit quality starts, securing his 10th of the season with this outing. The only blemishes on Fedde's evening were solo homers allowed to Marcus Semien and Leody Taveras. The 31-year-old has been a revelation in his return stateside from Korea, pitching to a 2.98 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 104:32 K:BB across 117.2 innings this season. His time in Chicago looks to be limited as he's a significant trade target ahead of next week's trade deadline. Fedde is tentatively set to make his next start for the White Sox against Seattle at home this weekend.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Blanks Twins for seventh win

Fedde (7-3) earned the win in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader against Minnesota, allowing four hits and two walks over five scoreless innings. He struck out five. After escaping a bases-loaded, no-out jam in the first inning, Fedde proceeded to blank the Twins over his subsequent four innings, picking up his team-leading seventh win. Fedde's been one of the few bright spots this year on a last-place White Sox team -- he's now held opponents to two runs or fewer in five of his last six starts. Overall, Fedde's ERA is down to 2.99 with a 1.13 WHIP and 99:30 K:BB across 19 starts (111.1 innings) as he continues to build value ahead of the trade deadline.

Fedde and the White Sox won't face the Twins on Tuesday after the game was postponed due to inclement weather. The two teams will play a doubleheader Wednesday, with Fedde getting the starting nod for the White Sox in the early game, per Vinnie Duber of AllCHGO.com. The 31-year-old righty has enjoyed a strong first season in Chicago, posting a career-best 3.13 ERA and 1.13 WHIP along with a 94:28 K:BB across 106.1 innings.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Stingy in Wednesday's win

Fedde (6-3) picked up the win in Wednesday's 8-2 victory over the Guardians, allowing one run on three hits and three walks over six innings. He struck out three. The right-hander produced his ninth quality start of the season, and fourth in his last five trips to the mound, on 91 pitches (54 strikes). Fedde's control wasn't as sharp as usual -- he walked multiple batters for the first time since May 31 -- but Cleveland wasn't able to take advantage. Since the beginning of June. Fedde sports a 3.16 ERA, 1.03 WHIP and 28:6 K:BB through 37 innings, and his value is only increasing if the White Sox decide to move him before the trade deadline. He'll look to keep rolling in his next outing, which lines up to come at home early next week against the Twins.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Tagged early in loss

Fedde (5-3) took the loss against the Dodgers on Wednesday, allowing four runs on five hits and one walk over six innings while striking out five. Fedde got off to a rough start, surrendering a leadoff home run to Shohei Ohtani to open the game before getting tagged for another three runs in the third. The right-handed veteran would allow just one more hit over his final three frames, but the damage had already been done as the White Sox's offense failed to provide any run support. Fedde has now gone at least six innings in four consecutive starts and hasn't walked more than one batter in any of his six outings this month. He currently holds a 25:3 K:BB in June to go along with a 3.48 ERA.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Completes seven innings in loss

Fedde (5-2) took the loss to the Tigers on Friday, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk with three strikeouts over seven innings. Fedde allowed a two-run home run to Carson Kelly but was otherwise excellent, retiring the final 14 batters he faced. Despite the loss, this was Fedde's third consecutive quality start, and he has now yielded fewer than three earned runs in 12 of 16 outings this year. The right-hander owns a 3.05 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and 86:24 K:BB over 94.1 innings in what has to this point been the best season of his MLB career. He lines up to face the Dodgers next week.

Fedde (5-1) picked up the win over the Diamondbacks on Saturday, allowing two runs on eight hits over six innings while striking out six. Fedde got himself into trouble early and often, surrendering leadoff hits in four of his six innings of work. However, the right-hander was able to limit the damage to just two runs, one of which came across in the opening frame. He threw only 12 first-pitch strikes (out of 26 first pitches) but still managed to hang on for his first win since May 14 against the Nationals. Fedde has now logged a quality start in back-to-back outings and in three of his last five starts overall. He also carries an impressive 17:1 K:BB through three June starts.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Let down by bullpen after QS

Fedde allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out four batters over seven innings in a no-decision against Seattle on Monday. Fedde was brilliant through seven scoreless frames before Dominic Canzone tagged him for a solo homer leading off the eighth. That spelled the end of Fedde's outing, but he departed in line for the victory with a 4-1 lead. However, Michael Kopech entered and gave up three runs, wiping out the advantage and forcing Fedde to settle for a no-decision. Despite the late letdown, this was nice bounce-back for the right-hander after he gave up seven earned runs across 10 innings over his previous two starts. He's in the midst of a career-best campaign with a 3.10 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 77:23 K:BB through 81.1 frames.

Fedde came away with a no-decision in Saturday's 5-3 loss to Baltimore, allowing three hits and three walks over 6.1 innings. He struck out six. The right-hander baffled the O's over 103 pitches (64 strikes) and left the mound with the White Sox ahead 3-0, only to see Jordan Leasure and Michael Kopech serve up three homers between them in the eighth inning. Fedde has delivered three scoreless outings in his last four starts, giving him five quality starts on the season, and he sports a stunning 2.80 ERA, 1.07 WHIP and 58:18 K:BB through 64.1 innings -- a far cry from the 5.41 ERA and 1.52 WHIP he compiled in 454.1 innings for the Nationals prior to spending 2023 in the KBO. He'll look to keep rolling in his next start, which lines up to come on the road next weekend in Milwaukee.

He struck out six without walking a batter. Facing the team he spent the first six seasons of his MLB career with before pitching in the KBO in 2023, Fedde showed the Nats what they were missing, tossing 60 of 99 pitches for strikes as he delivered a second straight scoreless effort and his fourth quality start of the year. The 31-year-old right-hander will take a 2.60 ERA, 1.06 WHIP and 50:14 K:BB through 52 innings into his next outing, which is scheduled to come early next week in Toronto.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Bounces back with scoreless outing

Fedde (3-0) earned the win over Cleveland on Thursday, allowing six hits and striking out three batters over six scoreless innings. It appeared Fedde's surprising effectiveness to begin the campaign could be coming to an end after he gave up five runs over 4.1 frames versus St. Louis his last time out, but he rebounded strongly with six scoreless innings Thursday. All six hits against the right-hander were singles, but he did need a little help to escape without a run on his ledger, as Jordan Leasure held off the Guardians after relieving Fedde with no outs and the bases loaded in the top of the seventh inning. Fedde's poor career track record provides a logical reason for fantasy managers to question how long he can keep pitching well, but he's exceeded expectations so far with a 3.00 ERA, 1.16 WHIP and 44:14 K:BB through 45 innings covering eight starts.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Folds against Cards

Fedde escaped with a no-decision Saturday in a 6-5 extra-inning win over the Cardinals, giving up five runs on four hits and five walks over 4.1 innings. He struck out two. The right-hander blanked St. Louis for four innings despite issuing free passes in the first, second and fourth frames, but his luck ran out in the fifth. Fortunately for Fedde, the White Sox came back to tie the game up after he left the mound before winning in the 10th. Fedde threw only 48 of 91 pitches for strikes in his shortest outing of the season, and he has walked at least three batters in three of his last five starts. He'll take a 3.46 ERA, 1.18 WHIP and 41:14 K:BB through 39 innings into his next outing, which lines up to come at home next week against the Guardians.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Pitches into ninth versus Tampa Bay

Fedde (2-0) earned the win after he pitched 8.1 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits while striking out nine batters in Sunday's 4-2 victory over the Rays. Fedde tossed three scoreless innings before he surrendered a solo homer to Isaac Paredes in the top of the fourth frame. He later allowed another run in the top of the ninth when attempting to finish off the complete game, exiting with a runner on second and one out in the final inning. The 31-year-old has now recorded back-to-back quality starts while he's given up just three total runs over 22 innings in his last three outings. Fedde will carry a 2.60 ERA into his next projected start Friday in St. Louis.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Tallies 11 punchouts

Fedde allowed one earned run on three hits and struck out 11 batters across six innings Tuesday en route to a loss against Minnesota. He didn't factor into the decision. Fedde got behind early after allowing an RBI single to Max Kepler in the first inning, but an Eloy Jimenez three-run homer allowed him to leave the game with a 3-1 lead. However, the 31-year-old was unable to secure his second win of the season thanks to a ninth-inning rally from the Twins. His 11 strikeouts represent a new career high, and the right-hander has emerged as one of the more reliable arms in Chicago's rotation with a 2.73 ERA across his first five starts. He's lined up to start again at home against the Rays on Sunday.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: Fans seven in team debut

Fedde did not factor into the decision, allowing two runs on five hits and one walk over 4.2 innings during Sunday's loss to the Tigers. He struck out seven. Fedde needed 96 pitches to record 14 outs, but he looked solid in his first start with the White Sox. After playing each of his first six big-league seasons with the Nationals, Fedde spent time last year in the KBO with much success, leading to another major-league opportunity, this time with the White Sox. His next start is tentatively slated to take place on the road next weekend against Kansas City.

In the contest, he took a line drive off of his right leg, suffering a quadriceps contusion. He reportedly avoided a significant injury, and Fedde expects to be able to make his first scheduled start of the 2024 campaign Sunday versus the Tigers.

  • White Sox's Erick Fedde: May start Opening Day

Fedde appears to be in line to start for the White Sox on Opening Day against the Tigers, Daryl Van Schouwen of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Fedde emerged as the frontrunner to start Opening Day after the White Sox traded Dylan Cease to the Padres on Wednesday in exchange for a haul of prospects. Fedde's last season in the majors came in 2022, when he accumulated a 5.81 ERA and 1.63 WHIP while striking out 94 batters across 127 innings. He spent last season in the Korea Baseball Organization and won the league's MVP award after posting a 2.00 ERA, and the 31-year-old righty has has been OK in spring training thus far. Fedde's recent success should be enough to warrant cautious optimism from fantasy managers heading into the new season.
