Turnbull allowed three runs on six hits across three innings in Thursday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. He struck out four. Turnbull allowed only three total hits across his first two spring starts, but he was much more hittable Thursday. On a positive note, the righty continued to rack up strikeouts, and he now has nine across 7.1 Grapefruit League innings. Turnbull is making his return from Tommy John surgery this year, so there likely will be some ups and downs, but he could be a streaming option in the right matchups.... See More ... See Less

Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Strikes out three Friday
Turnbull allowed one run on a hit and a walk across 2.1 innings in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Yankees. He struck out three. Making his second start of the spring, Turnbull once again looked solid. The righty threw 45 pitches, up from 25 in his first outing, so the Tigers are keeping his workload in check as he returns from his July 2021 Tommy John surgery. Turnbull may have some streaming appeal in 2023, though the innings limit that will likely be in place caps his upside.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Tosses two innings in spring debut
Turnbull (elbow) allowed one run on two hits across two innings in Saturday's Grapefruit League game against the Blue Jays. He struck out two. It was Turnbull's first game action since 2021 as he makes his way back following Tommy John surgery. The righty logged 25 pitches, and the Tigers will likely be cautious with him throughout the spring. Turnbull will slot into Detroit's rotation this season, possibly as the No. 2 starter behind Eduardo Rodriguez. He could have some fantasy appeal if he's fully healthy, though his workload figures to be managed all year, which could limit his upside. Turnbull's career high in innings is the 148.1 he pitched back in 2019.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Grapefruit debut coming Saturday
Turnbull (elbow) will make his Grapefruit League debut Saturday versus the Blue Jays, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. It will mark the first game action since June of 2021 for Turnbull, who is coming back from Tommy John surgery. The right-hander has reportedly been impressive during throwing sessions this spring and will now get to test things out against live competition. He'll be under workload restrictions in 2023 but could be an interesting late-round fantasy target.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Throws live batting practice
Turnbull (elbow) impressed during his first live batting practice session of the spring Thursday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. It was the first time Turnbull has faced live hitting since he suffered a right elbow injury back in June of 2021, which ultimately required Tommy John surgery. The 30-year-old is expected to be part of the Tigers' Opening Day rotation, but his workload will be monitored closely considering he missed all of 2022 and barely topped 100 innings combined from 2020-21.... Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Clocked at 94 mph
Turnbull (elbow) hit 94 mph during his first bullpen session of the spring Friday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. That's right at where he was sitting prior to Tommy John surgery, but Turnbull was encouraged because he said he never throws that hard in bullpen sessions. The right-hander missed all of 2022 following his elbow operation in July 2021, but he'll enter 2023 with a clean bill of health. Expect the Tigers to be careful with Turnbull's workload, though, given that he threw just 50 innings in 2021 and 56.2 frames in 2020.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Taking part in offseason work
The Tigers announced Tuesday that Turnbull (elbow) is fully healthy and participating in his normal offseason program, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The right-hander missed the entire 2022 campaign while he rehabbed from Tommy John surgery in July of last year, but he's ready to go for the start of spring training. Turnbull made nine starts in 2021 prior to the procedure and had a 2.88 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and 44:12 K:BB in 50 innings, and he should be in the rotation for Detroit to begin 2023.... See More ... Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Won't return in 2022
Manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Turnbull (elbow) won't return in 2022, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. Turnbull underwent Tommy John surgery in late July of last year and resumed mound work earlier this month. Although Hinch initially hoped that the right-hander would be able to return sometime in September, the Tigers' skipper said Wednesday that the aggressive timetable required for a late-season return wouldn't be worth it for Turnbull or the team. Turnbull should now have plenty of time to make sure he's fully healthy before likely returning to action during spring training in 2023.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Steps back on mound
Tigers manager A.J. Hinch said Wednesday that Turnbull (elbow) has recently thrown a couple bullpen sessions at the team's extended spring training complex in Lakeland, Fla., Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Detroit isn't closing the door on Turnbull making enough progress over the next month or two to put himself in position to return from the 60-day injured list in September, but the organization's main goal at this stage is to have him available in full capacity for spring training in 2023. Turnbull underwent Tommy John surgery in late July of last year and likely won't have enough time to build up for a starting role if he were to make a late-season return from the IL.... See More ... Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Lands on 60-day injured list
Turnbull (elbow) was placed on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. Turnbull underwent Tommy John surgery in July 2021 and is expected to miss most or all of the 2022 campaign, so Wednesday's move doesn't come as a surprise. The right-hander signed a two-year, $3.65 million contract with Detroit on Tuesday to avoid arbitration.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Nabs two-year deal
Turnbull (elbow) agreed Tuesday with the Tigers on a two-year, $3.65 million contract to avoid arbitration, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. After the two-year deal expires, Turnbull will be arbitration-eligible for one more year before reaching free agency following the 2024 season. Turnbull is expected to miss the majority, if not all, of the 2022 campaign while recovering from July 2020 Tommy John surgery, so he'll be making a modest $1.5 million this season before his salary climbs to $2.15 million in 2023, when he should be back to full health. Turnbull's deal for 2023 also includes an additional $125,000 in performance-based incentives.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Turnbull underwent Tommy John surgery Thursday, Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. Turnbull suffered a setback in his recovery in early July, and doctors recommended Tommy John surgery after he was diagnosed with a torn UCL. The right-hander should miss most or all of the 2022 season following the procedure, and a better timetable for his return could be revealed once he resumes activities.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Requires Tommy John surgery
Turnbull (forearm) will undergo Tommy John surgery and miss the remainder of 2021, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. The righty's injury was initially diagnosed as a forearm strain, but it turned out to be a torn UCL. Turnbull was enjoying a career-best campaign before going on the IL, starting nine games and posting a 2.88 ERA in 50 innings. He also threw a no-hitter, of course. Turnbull's 2022 season is in doubt as well, with the best-case scenario having him back with the Tigers late in the year. Once healthy, the 28-year-old figures to rejoin Casey Mize, Tarik Skubal and Matt Manning as the foundation of Detroit's promising young rotation.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Suffers setback
Turnbull (forearm) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Wednesday, Evan Petzold of the Detroit Free Press reports. Turnbull resumed throwing at the end of June, but he felt something recently and was brought from Lakeland to Dallas to be evaluated, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. The right-hander will be shut down from throwing following his setback, and the team considers early August to be a best-case scenario for his return. Ian Krol's contract was selected by the Tigers as part of a corresponding move.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Cleared to throw
Turnbull (forearm) was cleared to resume throwing Tuesday, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Turnbull has been out with a forearm strain since early June. He doesn't have a clear return date, but he's moving in the right direction and is expected to advance to mound work by the end of the week.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Likely out until after break
The Tigers aren't planning on having Turnbull (forearm) return from the 10-day injured list until after the All-Star break, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Turnbull is set to begin a throwing program this week at the Tigers' spring training facility in Lakeland, Fla., but he'll likely need around three weeks to build up for starting duty after he was shut down earlier this month with a right forearm strain. The right-hander had been Detroit's top pitcher prior to landing on the shelf, going 4-2 with a 2.88 ERA, 0.98 WHIP and a 44:12 K:BB In 50 innings through his first nine starts.... See More ... Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Nearing throwing program
Turnbull (forearm) will likely start a throwing program this week. Jason Beck of MLB.com reports. This is positive news for Turnbull, who posted a 2.88 ERA in nine starts before landing on the injured list June 5 with a right forearm strain. Having been sidelined a few weeks, the righty will likely require a rehab assignment after completing the throwing program, so he's still a ways off from returning.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: No structural damage to forearm
Manager A.J. Hinch said Sunday that Turnbull's right forearm is structurally sound after the 28-year-old underwent further medical evaluations, Evan Woodbery of MLive.com reports. "It's muscular in nature," Hinch said of Turnbull's injury. "He does have inflammation he's got to deal with, but we were very happy with the initial diagnosis." The Tigers placed Turnbull on the injured list Saturday with right forearm tightness, a diagnosis he received after being pulled from his start one day earlier. Fortunately for Turnbull, he appears to have avoided a strain of the forearm, and he should be able to treat his injury through rest and rehab while he waits for the inflammation to subside. He remains without a definitive timeline for a return, but one should begin to come into focus once he's cleared to start a throwing program.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Placed on 10-day IL
Turnbull was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right forearm strain Saturday. Turnbull sustained his injury during Friday's start against the White Sox and was removed after just four innings. Manager A.J. Hinch was encouraged by the right-hander's initial test results and said that the issue appears to be muscular rather than structural. Right-hander Bryan Garcia was called up in a corresponding move, and the Tigers haven't yet announced who will take Turnbull's place in the rotation while he's sidelined.... See More ... See Less -
Tigers' Spencer Turnbull: Initial results encouraging
Turnbull's forearm injury may be simply a muscle strain and not structural, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Turnbull was removed from Friday's start against the White Sox due to right forearm tightness. He'll be further examined in the coming days, but manager A.J. Hinch is optimistic about the right-hander's status going forward. If Turnbull is available for his next turn through the rotation, he tentatively lines up to make his next start at home against the Mariners on Thursday.... See More ... See Less
