  • Brewers' Brian Anderson: Will see bulk of starts in RF

Anderson will play right field "quite a bit" at the start of the season for the Brewers, manager Craig Counsell told Adam McCalvy of MLB.com on Wednesday. It seemed when Anderson was first signed back in January that the plan was to play him primarily at third base as Luis Urias slid over to second. However, Tyrone Taylor's (elbow) injury created an opening in right field and Brice Turang seized the second base gig, allowing Urias to stay at third and Anderson to play right. His leash figures to be pretty short, though, as the Brewers have some talented young outfielders waiting at Triple-A Nashville and also Jesse Winker available to play the outfield when he's not at designated hitter.

  • Brewers' Brian Anderson: Racking up hits this spring

Anderson is 8-for-19 (.421) with two home runs through nine games this spring in the Cactus League. Anderson had a rough final year in Miami last season, but there's some thought that he could be rejuvenated offensively following an offseason move to Milwaukee. He's in line for everyday playing time out of the gate, whether in the corner outfield or his standard position at third base, and American Family Field is a lot friendlier to hitters than loanDepot park. There should deep-league fantasy appeal here.

  • Brewers' Brian Anderson: Expected to play primarily at 3B

Anderson told reporters via Zoom on Sunday that he will primarily play third base, Adam McCalvy of MLB.com reports. Anderson also said the team has talked to him about playing in the outfield, and also potentially at first base. The former Miami infielder/outfielder signed a one-year, $3.5 million deal with the Brewers after being non-tendered by the Marlins following a disappointing 2022 season where he posted a .657 OPS over 98 games.

  • Brewers' Brian Anderson: Signs on with Milwaukee

Anderson agreed to a contract with the Brewers on Tuesday, Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic reports. Anderson was non-tendered by the Marlins over the winter after slashing .222/.311/.346 with eight homers and 28 RBi over 98 games with Miami. After serving mainly as an everyday third baseman through his first five seasons with the Marlins, Anderson moved into more of a utility role in 2022, but a downturn in performance at the plate resulted in Miami cutting him earlier in the offseason. With the move to Milwaukee, Anderson will get the chance to win the starting job at the hot corner or in right field this spring, and at the very least, he should see plenty of playing time against left-handed pitching in 2023.

  • Brian Anderson: Non-tendered by Miami

The Marlins declined to tender Anderson a contract for 2023, Craig Mish of SportsGrid.com reports. Anderson has battled injuries over the past two seasons, falling short of 100 games played both years, and the Marlins decided to move on rather than pay an above-market rate for Anderson's services. Despite his injury woes, Anderson (career .750 OPS) figures to get a big-league contract in free agency.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Sitting out finale

Anderson is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against Atlanta. Anderson will head to the bench for the second time in three games to close out the season. The 29-year-old entered Wednesday's contest with a .657 OPS, the lowest mark of his six-year big-league career.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Takes seat Monday

Anderson is out of the lineup for Monday's game against Atlanta, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. While moving between right field and designated hitter, Anderson picked up starts in eight of Miami's last nine games while posting a .598 OPS. He'll get a breather for Monday's series opener after an 0-for-5, three-strikeout showing in Sunday's 4-3 win over Milwaukee in 12 innings.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Takes seat Thursday

Anderson is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies. Anderson will hit the bench after he started each of the past eight games at either third base, right field or designated hitter. With Avisail Garcia (hamstring) on the injured list, Joey Wendle (core) day-to-day and with Garrett Cooper owning a .594 OPS since the All-Star break, Anderson should have a fairly clear path to steady playing time the rest of the way even if he doesn't have a lineup spot at any one position.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Two homers in loss

Anderson went 2-for-4 with two homers and three RBI in a 9-3 loss Sunday against the Mets. Anderson hit a solo homer in the fourth off Taijuan Walker and added a two-run shot in the eighth off Seth Lugo. It was his first two-homer game since knocking three out of the park Sept. 18, 2020. Entering play Sunday, he was 10-for-78 in his last 23 games and his OPS had fallen from .744 to .662. The two home runs Sunday brought his OPS up to .688 and gave him eight long balls on the season.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Resting Wednesday

Anderson isn't in the lineup Wednesday against Philadelphia, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Anderson is getting a rare day off after he went 2-for-18 with two RBI, a walk and seven strikeouts over the last five games. Bryan De La Cruz will take over in left field and bat seventh.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Opens scoring with homer

Anderson went 1-for-3 with a solo home run, a walk and two total runs scored in Tuesday's 5-3 win over the Athletics. This was Anderson's second homer since returning from a shoulder injury Aug. 12. In 10 games in that span, he's gone 7-for-34 (.206) with four extra-base hits, four RBI and a 6:12 BB:K. The 29-year-old has a .248/.343/.388 slash line with five long balls, 16 RBI, 30 runs scored and a stolen base through 245 plate appearances this year. He's functioned as the Marlins' primary right fielder with Avisail Garcia (hamstring) out.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Reaches base three times in win

Anderson went 1-for-3 with two walks and an RBI double in Monday's 3-0 win over the Athletics. Anderson has settled in as the Marlins' primary right fielder since being activated from the injured list just over a week ago, but he was deployed as the designated hitter in Monday's series opener. Though he's turned in an underwhelming .660 OPS in his first nine games back from the IL, Anderson should benefit from steady playing time while all of Avisail Garcia (hamstring), Garrett Cooper (concussion), Jorge Soler (back) and Jazz Chisholm (back) are on the shelf.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: On bench Monday

Anderson isn't in the lineup Monday against the Padres, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Anderson is getting a breather after he went 1-for-8 with two strikeouts over the last two games. Joey Wendle will start at third base and lead off Monday.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Not in lineup for matinee

Anderson isn't starting the first game of Saturday's doubleheader against Atlanta, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Anderson returned to the field Friday after a three-week absence due to a shoulder injury. He went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a walk and a strikeout in his return. Charles Leblanc is starting at the hot corner and batting seventh.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Activated by Marlins

Anderson (shoulder) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Friday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Anderson spent just under three weeks on the injured list but recently began a rehab assignment at Triple-A Jacksonville and went 5-for-16 with two home runs, two doubles, four runs, a walk and five strikeouts. He could serve as the Marlins' primary third baseman now that he's back to full health, but given that Charles Leblanc has been hitting extremely well in his place, Anderson might see significant action in an outfield corner instead.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Rehab assignment on tap

Anderson (shoulder) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Jacksonville this weekend, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. Anderson has been on the injured list since July 24 but has been cleared to return to game action with the Triple-A club. The 29-year-old should be in the mix to rejoin the Marlins early next week.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Cleared for soft-toss work

Anderson (shoulder) is scheduled to do some soft tossing Monday, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reports. Anderson doesn't seem to have made substantial progress in his recovery from his left shoulder sprain since landing on the injured list July 24, but his ability to do some throwing Monday at least suggests that he's no longer shut down. A timeline for his return from the IL likely won't come into focus until he's able to resume full baseball activities.

  • Marlins' Brian Anderson: Out with shoulder sprain

Anderson was placed on the 10-day injured list Sunday with a sprained left shoulder, Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald reports. The 29-year-old underwent an MRI after suffering the injury on an attempted dive Saturday, and he'll be forced to miss some time with a sprain. Anderson had two separate stints on the IL last year due to issues with the same shoulder, and it's unclear how long he's expected to be out this time. Joey Wendle should see more playing time against left-handed pitching while Anderson is sidelined, and Luke Williams should also have an increased role.
