Tucker is not in lineup Monday versus the Brewers, but the 27-year-old switch hitter will provide some defensive versatility off the bench. A former prospect of note last decade when he was in the Pirates' organization, Tucker hit .311/.419/.459 with five home runs and seven steals in 58 games in the Pacific Coast League.

Tucker will move on to the third organization of his career after previous stops with Pittsburgh and Arizona. He elected free agency this offseason after the Diamondbacks previously cast him off their 40-man roster in July. The 26-year-old utility man finished this past season at Triple-A Reno, where he slashed .237/.297/.325 with two home runs and four stolen bases over 128 plate appearances.

Tucker is still just 25 years old, and the 2014 first-round pick once had a fair amount of prospect pedigree, but he simply hasn't done nearly enough at the big-league level thus far in his career. In 469 plate appearances split across four seasons, he's hit just .211/.259/.314 with five homers and four steals. The Pirates elected to give his roster spot to Yu Chang, who was acquired in a trade with the Guardians.

Tucker was optioned to Triple-A Indianapolis on Thursday, Alex Stumpf of DKPittsburghSports.com reports.
Tucker had relatively consistent playing time over the first few weeks of the season, but he started in just five of the nine games after returning from the COVID-19 injured list at the beginning of May. Over 18 major-league games this year, the 25-year-old has hit .175 with a triple, a double, three runs, two RBI and a stolen base. He should see more consistent at-bats in the minors, while Rodolfo Castro and Josh VanMeter should see most of the playing time at second base for the Pirates.

Pirates' Cole Tucker: Gives up switch-hitting, on bench
Tucker isn't starting Wednesday's game against the Dodgers.
Tucker has gone 3-for-14 with a double, a run, an RBI and four strikeouts over the last four games, and he'll be on the bench for the second time in the last three matchups. According to Jerry DiPaola of TribLive.com, Tucker revealed Tuesday that he will abandon switch-hitting and bat exclusively from the left side moving forward, which he believes will give him the best chance at finding consistent success at the plate. For the moment, he appears to have the edge on a strong-side platoon role at second base, though he'll cede the keystone to fellow lefty hitter Josh VanMeter on Wednesday as the Pirates oppose Dodgers right-hander Ryan Pepiot.
