Player Outlook
Adam Frazier is returning to where it all began. After moving on from the Pirates in 2021, then playing with four different teams, he's back in the Steel City on a one-year deal where he'll serve as a super-utility with the ability to play infield and outfield. Last season with the Royals was the first he didn't play regularly since 2019 as his already weak Hard-Hit rate dropped even more while he posted a career high strikeout rate. The Pirates infield isn't exactly stacked with potential All-Stars, but Frazier will need to regain some exit velocity to be anything more than an occasional fill in. Even though, he offers little in terms of power and speed.

  • Pirates' Adam Frazier: Returns to action Friday

Frazier (back) will start at second base and bat fifth in Friday's Grapefruit League game against the Phillies. Frazier hasn't played in more than a week while dealing with a back issue, but he's feeling up to giving it a go Friday. The veteran is slated to serve in a utility role with the Pirates this season.

  • Pirates' Adam Frazier: Battling back issues

Manager Derek Shelton said Wednesday that Frazier hasn't played in a spring game since Feb. 26 due to a back injury, Andrew Destin of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. The 33-year-old signed a one-year, $1.525 million contract with the Pirates in January but appeared in just three Grapefruit League games before the back injury surfaced. Frazier could return to game action before the end of the week, which would put him on track for the start of the regular season.

  • Pirates' Adam Frazier: No restrictions in camp

Frazier (thumb) took live batting practice against Pirates right-hander Mitch Keller during Wednesday's full-squad workout, Noah Hiles of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reports. Frazier will begin his second stint in Pittsburgh in 2025 after he signed a one-year, $1.525 million contract with the Pirates in January. He's projected to serve as a utility man for the Pirates, with his playing time likely to be contingent on the health of Pittsburgh's everyday players. During his time with the Royals last season, Frazier produced a career-low .576 OPS and struck out at a career-high 20.1 percent clip over 294 plate appearances.

  • Pirates' Adam Frazier: Back to Pittsburgh on one-year deal

The Pirates signed Frazier to a one-year, $1.525 million contract Tuesday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Frazier's first five-and-a-half seasons in the majors were with the Pirates before he made stops with the Padres, Mariners, Orioles and Royals. The 33-year-old slashed only .202/.282/.294 this past season in Kansas City and has managed just a .632 OPS over the last three seasons. Frazier had thumb surgery in October but should be ready to roll for spring training. He'll likely serve in a utility role in Pittsburgh this season.

  • Adam Frazier: Headed for free agency

The Royals declined Frazier's (thumb) mutual option for 2025 on Thursday, Mark Feinsand of MLB.com reports. Frazier saw only 294 plate appearances in 2024 -- his only campaign with the Royals -- his fewest in a full season since 2016. He also performed poorly by maintaining a .576 OPS with four home runs and three stolen bases. Frazier may be able to find a major-league deal due to his defensive versatility, though his days as a regular starter are likely in the rearview mirror.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Undergoing thumb surgery

Frazier will undergo surgery on his right thumb this week, Anne Rogers of MLB.com reports. Frazier strained the thumb back in June and required a brief injured-list stint at the time. The exact nature of the procedure he will have isn't clear, but Frazier should be fully healthy well ahead of spring training. The utility player has an $8.5 million mutual option for 2025.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Sitting Sunday

Frazier is absent from Sunday's lineup against Atlanta. Barring a pinch-hit appearance Sunday, Frazier will end the regular season having slashed .202/.282/.294 with four home runs and 22 RBI over 294 plate appearances. Hunter Renfroe will start in right field and bat sixth.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Sitting again versus southpaw

Frazier is not in the lineup for Friday's contest in Atlanta. Southpaw Max Fried marks the fifth lefty in a row that the Royals have faced and Frazier hasn't started any of those games. He did come off the bench with a go-ahead, two-run single in Thursday's win over the Nationals. Hunter Renfroe will occupy right field Friday.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Delivers go-ahead knock

Frazier hit a two-run single, stole a base and scored a run in his lone plate appearance in Thursday's 7-4 win over the Nationals. Frazier delivered a go-ahead knock in the ninth inning and came around to score himself on Salvador Perez's single. A run of opposing southpaw starters has reduced Frazier's playing time this week, but he's emerged as a utility option in a strong-side platoon role, playing mainly in right field and at third base. The veteran has had a forgettable season overall with a .205/.286/.298 slash line, four home runs, 22 RBI, 35 runs scored and three stolen bases across 290 plate appearances.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Sitting against southpaw

Frazier is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Nationals. Frazier will remain on the bench while the Royals face a fourth consecutive left-handed starting pitcher (Patrick Corbin). Hunter Renfroe will get the nod in right field in Frazier's place and will bat sixth.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: On bench against lefty

Frazier is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. The lefty-hitting Frazier will take a seat for the third game in a row while the Royals face a third consecutive left-handed starting pitcher (DJ Herz). Frazier still looks to have a hold on a strong-side platoon role in right field, but Tommy Pham will occupy the position Wednesday.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Sitting against southpaw

Frazier is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Giants. With a lefty (Blake Snell) on the bump for the Giants, the lefty-hitting Frazier will take a seat. Frazier will give way in right field to Hunter Renfroe, with the two having seemingly settled into a platoon at the position of late.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Gaining foothold in lineup

Frazier will start at third base and bat seventh in Monday's game against the Tigers. Frazier will remain in the lineup for a fifth consecutive game, with the versatile 32-year-old having picked up two starts at third base and right field and one at designated hitter during that stretch. He's mustered just two hits in 12 at-bats with one walk over the previous four contests, so Frazier's run as an everyday player could soon come to an end if he fails to get going at the dish.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Pops solo shot

Frazier went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional run scored in Friday's 8-3 win over the Pirates. Frazier has seen minimal playing time in September -- this was his first start of the month, and it came at third base. He hit a decent .267 over 21 games in August, but Frazier has seen the least usage of the Royals' options at second base and third base. Maikel Garcia, Paul DeJong and Michael Massey are all ahead of him at this stage of the season. Frazier has a .205/.281/.295 slash line with four homers, 20 RBI, 32 runs scored and two stolen bases over 272 plate appearances.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Not in Kansas City lineup

Frazier is absent from the lineup for Thursday's contest in Houston. Frazier had started each of the last nine games when the Royals were facing a traditional right-handed starter (he sat once against a righty opener), but he'll begin this one on the bench as the Astros send righty Hunter Brown to the hill. Garrett Hampson will be in right field for the series opener in Houston.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: On bench for Game 1 of twin bill

Frazier is out of the lineup for the first game of Monday's doubleheader versus the Guardians. The lefty-hitting Frazier has been gaining traction of late in the Royals' regular lineup against right-handed pitching, but he'll take a seat for the first contest of the twin bill. Right-hander Nick Sandlin is opening the game for the Guardians, but lefty Joey Cantillo is likely to take over on the mound by the time that Frazier's turn in the lower third of the batting order would have come up. The right-handed-hitting Tyler Gentry will thus pick up the start in right field in Frazier's stead.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Sitting versus southpaw

Frazier is out of the lineup for Sunday's game versus the Phillies. Frazier will sit Sunday for the second straight game as the Phillies send another left-hander (Kolby Allard) to the mound. Dairon Blanco will take over in right field and bat eighth in the series finale.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Out of lineup against lefty

Frazier isn't in the Royals' lineup for Saturday's game against the Phillies. With left-hander Ranger Suarez set to start on the bump for Philly, the lefty-hitting Frazier will step out of the starting nine. While he rests, Hunter Renfroe will start in right field, and Freddy Fermin will serve as the DH.

  • Royals' Adam Frazier: Getting regular run versus righties

Frazier will start in right field and bat seventh in Wednesday's game against the Angels. Dating back to Aug. 10, Frazier is hitting .421 over a stretch of eight games, and he's now picked up six consecutive starts against right-handed pitchers. Four of those six starts have come in right field, where he could be displacing Hunter Renfroe as the Royals' preferred option. The Royals will make room in the lineup Wednesday for both Frazier and Renfroe, however, with the latter player filling in at designated hitter for a resting Freddy Fermin.
