General manager Ross Atkins said Monday that Green (elbow) has been throwing bullpen sessions at the Blue Jays' spring training complex in Florida, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Atkins noted that Green that he "could be facing hitters and be in games" at some point next month. Green underwent Tommy John surgery on June 1, 2022 and will require a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment prior to being activated from the 60-day injured list, but he should have a chance at being ready to make his Blue Jays debut shortly after the All-Star break.... Blue Jays' Chad Green: Vacates 40-man roster
The Blue Jays placed Green (elbow) on the 60-day injured list Wednesday. The move frees up a 40-man roster spot while Green continues his rehab from the Tommy John surgery he underwent in June 2022. While Green's two-year deal was clearly structured with 2024 in mind, the right-hander could return later this season and be a valuable contributor in Toronto's bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Blue Jays' Chad Green: Nets two-year deal with Toronto
Green (elbow) signed a two-year, $8.5 million contract with the Blue Jays on Tuesday, Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.ca reports. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic says the second year of the deal will be a player option should the Jays elect to decline a three-year team option. If both sides decline, Toronto would get a two-year club option. Green underwent Tommy John surgery in June of 2022 and won't pitch again at least until late 2023, hence the unique structure of the deal. It's a contract that should pay off for the Jays if Green can come close to his pre-surgery form, as the 31-year-old boasts a career 3.17 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 494:96 K:BB over 383.2 innings of work.... Yankees' Chad Green: Undergoes Tommy John surgery
Green underwent surgery to reconstruct the UCL in his right elbow Friday. The surgery was performed by Dr. Keith Meister in Arlington, Texas. Green will likely be out of action for 12-18 months in order to recover. He ends 2022 with a 3.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB while logging a save, three holds, three blown saves and a 1-1 record across 14 relief appearances.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Shifts to 60-day IL
Green (elbow) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Friday. The Yankees announced last weekend that Green will require Tommy John surgery, so his move to the 60-day IL is simply procedural. The right-hander had posted a 3.00 ERA and 1.20 WHIP in 15 innings over 14 relief appearances prior to his injury, but he'll miss the remainder of 2022 and likely the majority of the 2023 season.... Yankees' Chad Green: Headed for Tommy John surgery
Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Sunday that Green (elbow) will soon undergo Tommy John surgery, Pete Caldera of The Bergen Record reports. Even if the procedure to repair the torn ligament in Green's elbow goes smoothly, he'll still miss the remainder of the 2022 season and likely the majority of the 2023 campaign while rehabbing and recovering from surgery. After collecting 19 holds and striking out 99 over 83.2 innings in 2021, Green had fallen down a rung or two in the Yankees' late-inning hierarchy in 2022 with Clay Holmes and Michael King capturing more prominent roles in the bullpen. Green was still effective before suffering the elbow injury, turning in a 3.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 16:5 K:BB across 15 innings while nabbing three holds and one save.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Placed on 15-day IL
Green was placed on the 15-day injured list with a right elbow strain Saturday. Green's injury is feared to be significant, so it's not very surprising to see him land on the injured list now that he's been diagnosed with an elbow strain. The right-hander is still receiving medical opinions, but manager Aaron Boone said Saturday that surgery is being considered, Lindsey Adler of The Athletic reports. Ron Marinaccio was recalled from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to provide an additional arm in the bullpen.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Injury feared to be serious
Green's forearm injury is feared to be a significant one, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. Green exited Thursday's game against Baltimore with what has so far been called right forearm discomfort, but forearm issues can sometimes be the first sign of an injury which will require a very lengthy absence and possibly even Tommy John surgery. It looks as though the Yankees fear that Green's could be in that category, but the righty will need to go through further tests before a clearer diagnosis emerges.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Managing right forearm discomfort
Green exited Thursday's game against Baltimore due to right forearm discomfort, Marly Rivera of ESPN.com reports. Green entered Thursday's matchup in the bottom of the sixth inning but exited with a trainer after throwing just 11 pitches. The righty will be reevaluated Friday when the Yankees return to New York.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Exits with trainer
Green was removed from Thursday's game against the Orioles in the bottom of the sixth inning due to an apparent injury, Bryan Hoch of MLB.com reports. Green was effective early in his relief appearance, as he threw eight of his 11 pitches for strikes. However, he motioned for a trainer after allowing a hit and no walks while striking out one in two-thirds of an inning. The nature and severity of Green's injury aren't yet clear.... See More ... Yankees' Chad Green: Records third hold
Green earned a hold against the Orioles on Monday, pitching a perfect inning and striking out one batter. Green handled the eighth frame with the Yankees up by three runs, and he threw 18 of 24 pitches for strikes to set the side down in order. He notched one strikeout and has fanned at least one batter in each of his past six outings. Green has posted a 3.14 ERA, 1.19 WHIP and 15:5 K:BB across 14.1 innings this season.... See More ... Yankees' Chad Green: Collects first save
Green struck out two in a perfect ninth inning Monday to record his first save of the season in a 3-2 win over the Blue Jays. Aroldis Chapman had pitched each of the prior two days, while Jonathan Loaisiga and Clay Holmes worked earlier in Monday's contest, so closing duties fell to Green. The veteran right-hander has had a couple bumpy appearances to begin the season, leaving him with a 3.48 ERA and 1.35 WHIP through 10.1 innings, and his velocity (94.5 mph average fastball, down more than one mph from 2021), strikeout rate (22.7 percent, the lowest of his career) and walk rate (career-worst 9.1 percent) are all causes for concern, but the sample size is still small.... Yankees' Chad Green: Takes tough loss Wednesday
Green (0-1) was tagged with the loss against Toronto on Wednesday as a result of giving up an unearned run in one inning. He did not allow any hits but issued one walk. Green was solid in the relief outing, throwing 15 of 22 pitches for strikes and holding the Blue Jays without a hit. However, his walk of Alejandro Kirk to begin the seventh inning came back to bite him as a one-out error and a single after Green was relieved by Jonathan Loaisiga pushed Toronto into the lead. Green has been effective in three outings thus far, allowing only one hit and one walk over three scoreless frames on the season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Receives $4 million for 2022
Green agreed to a one-year, $4 million contract with the Yankees on Tuesday to avoid arbitration, Robert Murray of FanSided.com reports. Green recorded six saves and 19 holds with a 3.12 ERA, 0.88 WHIP and 99:17 K:BB across 83.2 innings last season, leading to a nearly $2 million raise for 2022. The veteran right-hander should remain a key piece of New York's bullpen again this season.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Earns win over Red Sox
Green (10-7) earned the win Sunday against the Red Sox after tossing 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out two. Green has now tossed four straight scoreless outings, and that stretch of four straight appearances giving up at least one run between Sept. 8 and Sept. 15 seems to be a distant memory now. The consistency has been the biggest issue with Green this year, but he seems to be gearing up for a strong end of the regular season -- he hadn't recorded this many scoreless outings in a row since early July.... Yankees' Chad Green: Picks up win Monday
Green (8-7) earned the win over Texas on Monday, allowing no baserunners over 1.2 scoreless innings, during which he struck out one. Green relieved starter Nestor Cortes in the fifth frame and allowed an inherited runner to score on a sacrifice fly but didn't permit any baserunners. He pitched a 1-2-3 sixth and was credited with the win as New York held on for a 4-3 victory. Green has worked exclusively out of the bullpen this year, but his eight victories are tied for third-most on the team. He had allowed at least one run in each of his previous four appearances before Monday, yet he has been effective overall with a 3.39 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, 18 holds, six saves and a 10.5 K/9 across 77 innings.... Yankees' Chad Green: Handed seventh loss
Green (7-7) took the loss in Sunday's 7-6 defeat at the hands of the Mets, allowing one run on one hit with one strikeout in one inning. Green was brought in to pitch the eighth inning of a 6-6 game and served up Francisco Lindor's third home run of the game to fall in line for the loss. The defeat arrives on the heels of a blown save Saturday and the righty has now permitted one run apiece in each of his last three appearances, raising his ERA from 3.04 to 3.28 in the process.... Yankees' Chad Green: Falters in loss
Green (7-6) took the loss in Sunday's 3-1 defeat at the hands of the Athletics, allowing two runs on two hits in one inning. Green entered a 1-1 tie in the eighth inning and retired the first two Oakland hitters, but he subsequently surrendered a double and two-run Tony Kemp home run to fall in line for the loss. The defeat is Green's first since July 11 as he'd been enjoying a spotless August until Sunday's outing. The righty remains an integral piece in New York's bullpen and should continue to see use in high-leverage situations moving forward.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Secures sixth save
Green allowed one earned run on one hit while striking out two in the ninth inning, earning the save in the win over the Twins on Thursday. Green entered in the ninth inning with a three-run lead and surrendered a solo home run to Miguel Sano, but he managed to retire the other three batters to earn his sixth save of the season. Aroldis Chapman was reinstated from the injured list Wednesday but struggled in his return, providing Green another ninth-inning opportunity Thursday. He's picked up three saves in his last three appearances since blowing two leads earlier in August, though he's unlikely to see regular save chances now that Chapman is healthy. Green carries a 3.13 ERA and 0.85 WHIP with a 10.4 K/9 in 63.1 innings.... See More ... See Less -
Yankees' Chad Green: Notches fifth save
Green struck out one in a perfect seventh inning during the second game of Tuesday's doubleheader against the Yankees, recording his fifth save of the season. The right-hander got the call to protect a 2-0 lead and breezed through the top of Boston's batting order on 14 pitches (nine strikes). Green has picked up saves in consecutive appearances as he works in a closer committee with Jonathan Loaisiga and others while Aroldis Chapman (elbow) is on the shelf, but he'll return to his setup role once Chapman is back, perhaps before the end of the week....
