Player Outlook
J.P. Crawford enjoyed a wonderful breakout season offensively after years of fantasy managers waiting for the production to catch up with the potential with him. Crawford parlayed his excellent OBP skills into scoring 94 runs thanks to a career high walk rate which helped him get on base 38% of the time. Crawford's batting average splits were nil but 16 of his 19 homers came against righties and he was a monster in the second half trying to personally will Seattle into returning to the postseason with 11 homers, 47 runs, and a .282/.401/.492 line during that time. Crawford opened the season hitting 9th but quickly moved to the leadoff and remained there most of the season. That role should continue for him as he has the best OBP chops on the roster. Crawford is one of 23 players with at least 600 plate appearances in each of the past three seasons and just one of five shortstops to do so. He was a bargain in 2023 drafts, but his price has risen significantly this draft season.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Still looking for first spring hit

Crawford, who drew two walks and scored a run in his two plate appearances during Thursday's Cactus League win over the Angels, is now 0-for-9 over his first six exhibitions. The veteran has drawn three walks, but that's been the extent of his offensive production. Crawford's early struggles aside, he's once again being counted on to hold down the fort on a near everyday basis at shortstop after slugging a career-high 19 home runs and driving in a career-best 65 RBI a season ago. The power surge helped Crawford produce a career-high .818 OPS as well, although there will be some doubt as to his ability to replicate those numbers after previously having failed to top nine homers in any season.

He's put together a solid September, batting .257 (28-for-109) with seven homers, 21 RBI, seven doubles and 18 runs scored over 27 contests. He's now at a .266/.381/.440 slash line with 19 long balls, 65 RBI, 94 runs scored and two stolen bases over 143 contests this season.

The shortstop is up to 18 long balls, 59 RBI, 92 runs scored, two stolen bases and a .264/.380/.434 slash line through 141 contests. He continues to be one of the Mariners' more impactful hitters, as he now has a hit in 12 of his last 13 games and is slashing .281/.349/.491 over that span. • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Approaching career-best RBI total

Crawford, who drove in three runs with a bases-clearing double over five plate appearances against the Angels on Tuesday, is now just one RBI from tying the career-high 54 he generated in 2021. The veteran shortstop has been a pleasant surprise for fantasy managers in a couple of different statistical aspects this season. The fact he's on the precipice of a new career-best RBI tally is certainly one, and a pair of figures that have helped facilitate it -- a .280 average with runners on base and a career-high 15 home runs -- are two others. Crawford appeared to truly hit his stride at the plate three games into the second half of the season and hasn't cooled off for any extended stretch since, posting a .285/.408/.485 slash line in the 43 games he's played since July 16.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Belts clutch blast Wednesday

Crawford went 1-for-5 with a three-run home run in a win over the Reds on Wednesday. Crawford came through with the Mariners' most impactful hit of the game, slugging a 382-foot shot to right with Ty France and Josh Rojas aboard in the fourth inning to extend Seattle's lead to 6-1. The homer was Crawford's fifth in the last 12 games, an atypical power surge that has pushed his career-high total in that category to 15. Moreover, all three components of Crawford's .271/.389/.437 slash line are also career-best figures by wide margins.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Possible waiver wire pickups

J.P. Crawford ended the weekend on a sour note, going 0 for 4 Sunday, but in the two games prior, he went 4 for 8 with two home runs. And in 12 games since returning from a two-week absence for a concussion, he's 14 for 45 (.311) with four home runs. Really, the light bulb came on for him at the start of July, his batting average having climbed 32 points since then, and in Head-to-Head points leagues, it's made for a higher point-per-game average than Bo Bichette this year. The 59-walk edge has a little something to do with it, and it's that superlative plate discipline that makes Crawford particularly appealing in that format. If you recently lost Bichette or Matt McLain and have already been scooped on Royce Lewis, Crawford makes for another fine replacement.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Accounts for only run Friday

Crawford went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and a walk in a loss to the Mets on Friday. Crawford's 413-foot shot to center in the fourth inning would end up representing the Mariners' only run of the night against a dominant Kodai Senga and two relievers. The veteran shortstop has seen his power stroke come alive of late, as Friday's round tripper was his third in the last seven games and pushed his season total to a career-best 13. Crawford has also reached safely in six of his last seven games, a stretch during which he's hitting .400 (10-for-25) with five total extra-base hits, six RBI, six walks, a stolen base and 10 runs.

Crawford went 1-for-4 with a two-run single and a stolen base in a win over the Athletics on Wednesday. Crawford plated the tying and go-ahead runs with his timely seventh-inning single, sealing the comeback victory for Seattle. Crawford's steal was only his second of the season, and the veteran shortstop has now cobbled together an impressive .294 average -- including a .455 figure with men on base -- and .984 OPS over the nine games he's played since returning from a stint on the 7-day injured list due to a concussion.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Busy in return to lineup

Crawford (concussion) went 0-for-4 with two walks and two runs in a win over the White Sox on Monday. Crawford was back in his familiar leadoff spot in his return from the injured list and played a table-setting role in the lopsided win. The veteran shortstop's multiple trips on the basepaths were fitting, considering he's now sitting on an elite .436 on-base percentage across 112 plate appearances since the All-Star break thanks in large part to a 17.0 percent walk rate in that span.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Makes return from IL

The Mariners reinstated Crawford (concussion) from the 7-day injured list Monday. Seattle has yet to release its lineup for Monday's series opener against the White Sox, but Crawford will presumably reclaim a prominent spot in the batting order while settling back in as the Mariners' everyday shortstop. The 28-year-old sustained a concussion Aug. 9 but cleared the protocol 10 days later and was given the green light to rejoin the big club after experiencing no setbacks during his lone rehab game with High-A Everett over the weekend.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Return date uncertain

Crawford may not return from the 7-day concussion IL when eligible Thursday, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. The good news is that Crawford is trending in the right direction. However, manager Scott Servais said there is still some uncertainty on whether the 28-year-old shortstop will rejoin the team immediately once he's eligible. A better picture will emerge over the next couple of days, but Crawford's absence likely wouldn't extend more than a few days past Thursday if need be.

  • Mariners' J.P. Crawford: Placed on concussion IL

Crawford was placed on the 7-day concussion injured list Friday, retroactive to Aug. 10, Ryan Divish of The Seattle Times reports. Crawford has officially been diagnosed with a concussion following his collision Wednesday with teammate Eugenio Suarez. The 28-year-old shortstop is enjoying a mini breakout this season, having registered a .266/.379/.411 batting line and a career-high 10 home runs through 107 games. He'll be first eligible to return to the Mariners next Sunday, but head injuries never come with a predictable recovery timeline. Jose Caballero and Dylan Moore will likely be the fill-in options at short.

Crawford's blast established a new personal best in round trippers and extended his on-base streak to 12 games in the process. The 28-year-old's .787 OPS is also a career high and partly the byproduct of a 15.0 percent walk rate that's his highest since his 2017 rookie season in Philadelphia.
