McGuire (thumb) was available to play Wednesday, MLB.com reports. McGuire injured his thumb while taking warmup pitches prior to the start of the third inning of Tuesday's loss to the Rays. Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Suffers bruised thumb
McGuire was pulled from Tuesday's game against Tampa Bay due to a left thumb contusion, Christopher Smith of The Springfield Republican reports. McGuire injured his thumb while catching warmup throws from Tanner Houck ahead of the third inning and was replaced by Connor Wong. There's no word on how long McGuire will be held out, but Wong figures to see more consistent starts behind the plate while McGuire recovers.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Exits with thumb injury
McGuire was removed from Tuesday's game against the Rays with a thumb injury, Ian Browne of MLB.com reports. No word yet on the severity of McGuire's injury, but the Red Sox should provide more specifics in the near future. Connor Wong entered the game to replace McGuire behind the plate.... See More ... Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Heads to bench Monday
McGuire is out of the lineup for Monday's game against the Rangers. He'll give way to Connor Wong behind the dish as Boston opens a three-game set in Texas. McGuire and Wong have been splitting work at catcher in relatively equitable fashion thus far in September, with the former getting seven starts to the latter's 10. With a .154/.241/.231 slash line so far this month, McGuire hasn't made a compelling case to push for a larger share of the playing time.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Homers in return
McGuire went 1-for-3 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Tuesday's 6-4 win over the Mariners. McGuire missed about six weeks with an oblique injury. He had no trouble getting the ball in the air in his return, popping a solo shot and a sacrifice fly to contribute to the offense. The catcher is slashing a decent .269/.310/.380 with one homer, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and nine doubles through 41 contests this season. He's likely to remain behind Connor Wong on the depth chart going forward.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Set to return for Seattle series
Red Sox manager Alex Cora said Monday that McGuire will be activated from the 10-day injured list at some point during the team's series in Seattle to begin the week, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. McGuire made the trip with the Red Sox to Seattle after he spent the past weekend at Triple-A Worcester, with whom he went 2-for-10 with a double and a walk during his three-game rehab assignment. Cora indicated everything went well for McGuire on the rehab assignment, but the Red Sox's decision not to activate him Monday may have been designed to give the team as much roster flexibility as possible leading into Tuesday's deadline. Assuming McGuire is reinstated Tuesday or Wednesday, he'll unseat Jorge Alfaro as the top backup to No. 1 catcher Connor Wong.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Close to rehab assignment
McGuire (oblique) is aiming to begin a rehab assignment by next Tuesday, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports. McGuire has missed nearly a month with a right oblique strain but is making nice progress. Jorge Alfaro has been Boston's backup catcher lately with McGuire out.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Catches side session Monday
McGuire (oblique) caught two innings for Corey Kluber on Monday, Mike Monaco of ESPN reports. McGuire continues to progress in his recovery from a right oblique strain, and he's likely closing in on a rehab assignment. However, the team has yet to officially disclose when he'll be sent out.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Doing baseball activites
McGuire (oblique) began baseball activities July 6, MLB.com reports. McGuire has been slow to recover from the oblique injury suffered while taking a swing June 21 against the Twins. These injuries typically take a minimum of two-to-three weeks to heal, but McGuire's will take longer.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: To IL with oblique strain
McGuire was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday with a right oblique strain, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. This move seemed inevitable once McGuire was designated with a strained oblique Wednesday. Caleb Hamilton was added to the roster to serve as Connor Wong's backup while McGuire is sidelined for at least a couple weeks.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Diagnosed with oblique strain
McGuire was removed from Wednesday's game against the Twins due to a right oblique strain, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. Still no word on the severity of McGuire's injury, but manager Alex Cora said a stint on the injured list is likely, per Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican. With McGuire presumably set to miss multiple weeks, the Red Sox could select Caleb Hamilton from Triple-A Worcester to temporarily serve as Connor Wong's backup.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Exits with injury
McGuire was removed from Wednesday's game against the Twins with an apparent injury, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. McGuire appeared to suffer a hand injury during a swing in the sixth inning and was immediately removed from the game, looking to be in a lot of pain. The Red Sox should provide an update on his status shortly, but early signs are not encouraging. Connor Wong entered the game to replace McGuire.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Sits out series finale
McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Rockies, Mac Cerullo of the Boston Herald reports. Though he'll give way to Connor Wong behind the dish, McGuire may be pushing his way into a timeshare at catcher. McGuire had started in three of the past four games and four of the past six, going 2-for-14 with a pair of doubles and two walks during that stretch.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Delivers winning run
McGuire went 0-for-3 with an RBI in Saturday's 2-1 win over Arizona. The Red Sox played small ball, as McGuire laid down a one-out bunt that plated Triston Casas from third base for the game-winning run. The backup catcher is going through a tough stretch, batting .136 (3-for-22) with a 39.1 percent strikeout rate over the last nine games. Despite the downturn, McGuire maintains a respectable .286 average for the season.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Back in action Tuesday
McGuire (hand) will start at catcher and bat ninth in Tuesday's game in Baltimore, Tyler Milliken of 98.5 The Sports Hub Boston reports. McGuire was out of commission for a couple days after taking a foul tip off the hand, but he's fine. He'll catch starting pitcher Corey Kluber on Tuesday while No. 1 backstop Connor Wong gets a breather.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Could be available off bench
McGuire (hand) could be available in an emergency Sunday against the Brewers, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. The 28-year-old took a foul tip to the right hand during Saturday's contest but had X-rays come back negative, and it appears he won't require a stint on the injured list. The Red Sox may try to stay away from McGuire for a day or two, but the team may not need to add a third catcher to the roster since he's still technically available.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Undergoing imaging on hand
McGuire is undergoing X-rays on his hand after Saturday's game to the Brewers, Chris Cotillo of The Springfield Republican reports. He went 0-for-2 in the loss. McGuire came in as a pinch-hitter for Connor Wong and it's unclear when he picked up the injury during Saturday's contest. The backstop should be considered day-to-day at this point.... See More ... Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Losing time to Connor Wong
McGuire is out of the lineup for Sunday's game against the Tigers, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The lefty-hitting McGuire will sit for the fifth time in seven games, with three absences coming against lefty pitchers and two coming against righties. McGuire has posted an .819 OPS over a small sample of 14 plate appearances, but his inability to control the run game appears to be the major reason why manager Alex Cora has favored Connor Wong as Boston's top backstop. Despite being behind the plate just 36 innings on the season, McGuire has allowed an MLB-leading 14 steals and has yet to throw out a baserunner.... See More ... See Less -
Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Not in Saturday's lineup
McGeuire is out of the lineup for Saturday's game at Detroit, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. McGuire is 4-for-13 to begin the season and will continue splitting time behind the plate with Connor Wong. With Wong starting Saturday, each catcher has started four games this season.... Red Sox's Reese McGuire: Sits again Wednesday
McGuire is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Pirates, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Even with the Pirates bringing a right-hander (Mitch Keller) to the hill for the series finale, the lefty-hitting McGuire will find himself on the bench for the third time in four games while the righty-hitting Connor Wong gets another turn behind the dish. McGuire remains atop the depth chart at catcher for now, but he may be Option 1A rather than a clear-cut starter or even a strong-side platoon option at the position.... See More ... See Less
