Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Cleared for mound work
General manager Ross Atkins said Monday that Ryu (elbow) has been throwing bullpen sessions at the Blue Jays' spring training complex in Florida, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Atkins added that Ryu "could be facing hitters and be in games" next month, though even if that comes to fruition, the veteran left-hander would likely be in store for a lengthy minor-league rehab assignment before making his 2023 debut with Toronto. Ryu had Tommy John surgery last June and is aiming to return from the 60-day injured list around the All-Star break.

The Blue Jays transferred Ryu (elbow) to the 60-day injured list Wednesday.
The move clears a spot on the 40-man roster for waiver pickup Jordan Luplow. Ryu is still working his way back from Tommy John surgery and will be out until around midseason.

Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Placed on 15-day IL
Ryu was placed on the 15-day injured list by the Blue Jays on Thursday with a left elbow UCL tear, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.
While he's only going on the 15-day IL for now, Ryu should eventually move to the 60-day IL when the Jays need the 40-man roster spot. The left-hander is hoping to make it back from Tommy John surgery by July.

Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Aiming for April mound work
Ryu (elbow) hopes to throw his first post-Tommy John surgery bullpen session sometime in April, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports.
Ryu is currently throwing on flat ground from 90-to-120 feet as he moves along in his rehab. The veteran lefty said Monday through an interpreter that he hopes to rejoin the Toronto rotation "sometime in mid-July." A mid-July debut would be 13 months after his surgery, which is a relatively fast return for a starting pitcher. The team, for what it's worth, has a "loose date in mind" for Ryu's return, but it's a "moving target," per Matheson.

Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Recovery on schedule
Manager John Schneider said Thursday that Ryu's (elbow) recovery from Tommy John surgery is on schedule, Rob Longley of the Toronto Sun reports.
Schneider also noted if Ryu does make it back late in the season, the veteran lefty would immediately slide into the rotation. Ryu has a goal of returning from last summer's operation in July, though that timetable might be a bit optimistic. The Blue Jays surely would be happy if they can get a healthy and effective Ryu back at any point after the All-Star break.

Blue Jays' Hyun Jin Ryu: Targeting July return
Ryu (elbow) said Wednesday he's targeting July for his return from Tommy John surgery, Jee-ho Yoo of the Yonhap News Agency reports.
The 35-year-old underwent the procedure in June 2022, so a return in July would be on the short end of the usual 12-to-18-month recovery timeline. Even if cleared for game action in July, Ryu could have a limited workload down the stretch coming off the injury.

Although the team's medical staff considered some revised procedures, the southpaw ultimately underwent the second Tommy John surgery of his career. The surgery will force Ryu to miss 12-to-18 months, meaning he won't be able to return until at least the second half of the 2023 season. It's not yet clear whether the 35-year-old will pitch for the Blue Jays again since he's entering the final season of his four-year, $80 million contract in 2023.

Blue Jays general manager Ross Atkins said Tuesday that Ryu will undergo season-ending surgery to address UCL damage to his left elbow, Scott Mitchell of TSN.ca reports.
Atkins said the Blue Jays aren't yet sure what type of procedure Ryu will need, but the 35-year-old southpaw is expected to require the second Tommy John surgery of his career or a revision of the one he had as a teenager in 2004. According to Mitchell, a normal Tommy John surgery would necessitate a 12-to-15-month recovery time, while a revised one would likely sideline him for 9-to-12 months. Either way, Ryu's recovery timeline will extend through the rest of the season and likely into the early portion of the 2023 campaign. Ryu, who posted a 5.67 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in six starts before hitting the shelf earlier this month, will enter the final season of his four-year, $80 million contract in 2023.
