Player Outlook
Marcell Ozuna struggled to a .687 OPS in 2022 and appeared to be in danger of being cut out of Atlanta's regular lineup last season after going 5-for-59 in April, but he quickly turned things around and finished 2023 with a career-high 40 homers, 100 RBI, 84 runs and a .274/.346/.558 slash line in 144 contests. That was good for a 139 wRC+, which is a vast improvement on his 85 wRC+ over the previous two years. His 2023 production was supported by a career-high 16.6 percent barrel rate and 49.0 percent hard-hit rate, which helped lead to a .284 xBA and .583 xSLG. Ozuna almost exclusively served as Atlanta's designated hitter, as he made only two appearances (one start) in the outfield, so his positional eligibility will be limited to begin 2024. That'll hardly matter to fantasy managers if he's able to replicate his 2023 campaign, but year-to-year consistency has never been the 33-year-old's forte. Ozuna's results last season were supported by strong underlying numbers and sets him up for another productive campaign in 2024, but he still carries some risk for fantasy managers given his boom-or-bust trends the past few years.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Continues to impress in spring

Ozuna went 1-for-3 in Monday's 3-0 Grapefruit League win over the Twins. The veteran DH appears set to thrive as part of what will be another stacked Atlanta lineup in 2024. Ozuna is hitting .407 with a 1.004 OPS through 27 Grapefruit League at-bats. Ozuna belted 40 home runs last season for an offense that was clicking all season, and his spring performance has done nothing to suggest he won't be a prolific power source again in 2024.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Hits two more home runs

Ozuna went 2-for-3 with two homers, a walk and four RBI in Sunday's 10-9 loss to the Nationals. Ozuna got his day going with a three-run blast in the third before sending out his 40th home run of the season in the ninth. Ozuna finished with seven RBI over the final two games of the year and ends the regular season with 100 RBI for the first time since 2017. Ozuna also reached 40 homers for the first time in his career and has had a tremendous bounce back campaign. The 32-year-old heads into the playoffs slashing .274/.346/.558. His .904 OPS and .284 ISO were both his highest marks since the shortened 2020 season.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Sits for matinee

Ozuna is out of the lineup for Game 1 of Sunday's doubleheader against the Nationals, Mark Bowman of MLB.com reports. Ozuna started the previous 10 games but will sit for Game 1 on Sunday after he posted a .300/.364/.625 slash line during that stretch. Ronald Acuna will rest his legs as the DH while Kevin Pillar starts in right field.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Gets evening off

Ozuna is not in the lineup for Game 2 of Monday's doubleheader with the Phillies. Ozuna has cooled a bit since his recent power surge and went 0-for-4 in the first game of Monday's twin bill, so manager Brian Snitker decided to prevent him from playing a full nine innings in the nightcap. Ronald Acuna will serve as Atlanta's designated hitter Monday night, and Kevin Pillar will replace Acuna in right field.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Shows power in win

Ozuna went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, two RBI and two runs scored in Friday's 6-3 win over the Dodgers. Ozuna ended August with seven homers over his last 10 games, and he kept that prodigious power streak going right into September. Across his last 11 games, he's batting .488 (20-for-41) with 12 extra-base hits. Prior to the surge, Ozuna was batting .249 and slugging .477 -- those marks are now at .272 and .543, respectively. He's up to 32 homers, 76 RBI, 71 runs scored and 20 doubles through 118 contests.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Blasts 31st homer

Ozuna went 1-for-4 with a solo home run and an additional RBI in Wednesday's 7-3 win over the Rockies. Ozuna's two-out sixth-inning blast off Kyle Freeland was his 31st home run of the season and his seventh in the past nine games. Though he's part of a star-studded Atlanta lineup, Ozuna's contributions shouldn't be overlooked. He's produced a .301/.371/.641 slash line with 14 home runs, 35 RBI and 32 runs since the All-Star break, paying handsome dividends for those who invested a late-round pick into him on draft day.

Ozuna connected on a solo home run in the second inning off Peter Lambert, marking the outfielders' sixth home run of his last eight games. Over that stretch, Ozuna is 15-for-30 (.500) with 11 runs scored and 13 RBI. He's also collected a hit in 24 of his last 25 games and is slashing .267/.340/.529 on the season (115 games).

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Slugs 29th homer

Ozuna went 1-for-4 with a two-run home run and a second run scored in Sunday's loss to the Giants. The veteran slugger got hold of a first-pitch slider from Scott Alexander in the sixth inning and drove it over the wall in left-center field, bringing Atlanta to within a run, but the NL East leaders were never able to find an equalizer in an eventual 8-5 loss. Ozuna has hit safely in six straight games and 22 of his last 23, ripping off a .386/.457/.735 slash line during that blistering stretch with seven of his 29 homers and 21 of his 70 RBI on the season.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Homer, four RBI in win

Ozuna went 3-for-4 with a home run, a double, four RBI and two runs scored in Wednesday's 7-0 win over the Mets. Ozuna was a triply shy of the cycle, but he hasn't hit a three-bagger since 2019, so he wasn't all that close to the feat. He was again the driving force of Atlanta's offense, logging his fourth multi-hit effort in his last five games. He has four homers and seven RBI in that span. For the season, the 32-year-old is slashing .262/.334/.519 with 28 homers, 67 RBI, 62 runs scored and 18 doubles through 110 contests.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Power surge continues

Ozuna went 3-for-3 with a walk, a double, a solo home run and a second run scored in Tuesday's 3-2 win over the Mets. His fifth-inning shot off Tylor Megill gave Atlanta a 3-0 lead and proved to be the difference in the game. Ozuna has gotten hot again, going yard three times in the last two games and slashing .342/.419/.632 in August with five homers and 14 RBI in 21 contests. Despite his ice-cold first month of the season, the 32-year-old slugger has an .836 OPS in 2023 -- his best performance over a full season since he erupted for a career-best .924 OPS in his final year with Miami in 2017.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Goes deep twice

Ozuna went 2-for-4 with two solo home runs in Monday's 10-4 loss to the Mets. The 32-year-old outfielder got the better of David Peterson on Monday, blasting two solo shots off the Mets' starter. Ozuna's first homer marked an historic achievement for Atlanta, as it now boasts five players with 25-plus home runs for the first time in franchise history. The slugger has now hit safely in 17 of his last 18 contests, posting a .348/.419/.621 slash line with four homers, 13 RBI and 13 runs scored during that stretch.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Possible waiver wire pickups

I have to admit I'm straight-up befuddled as to why Ozuna is still available in one-third of CBS Sports leagues. In fact, his roster rate hasn't exceeded its current 67 percent mark all season. It's to the point now where the full-season numbers make the case well enough, but if you eliminate his dreadful April, he's batting .276 with 22 homers, 58 RBI, 51 runs and an OPS pushing .900. That's in 86 games, so double those numbers, and you'll be just a little off his 162-game pace. Outfield is a difficult position to fill, and for nobody else out there could you reasonably expect those kinds of numbers over such a large sample. Particularly because he's helping to anchor a loaded Braves lineup, it's time to buy in once and for all.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Big day in Tuesday's win

Ozuna went 2-for-2 with two walks and a three-run home run in Tuesday's 5-0 win over the Yankees. The veteran slugger launched what proved to be the game-winning hit in the first inning when he took Luis Severino deep to straightaway center field. Ozuna's hit safely in 13 straight games, batting .333 (16-for-48) over that stretch, and the hot streak has pushed his slash line on the season up to .245/.320/.478 with 24 homers and 60 RBI in 103 contests.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Connects for 23rd homer

Ozuna went 1-for-3 with a solo home run in Friday's 8-0 win over the Cubs. He went back-to-back with Sean Murphy in the fourth inning, crushing a Kyle Hendricks sinker out of Wrigley Field entirely. Ozuna has an OPS north of .850 since the start of May, though he gets lost in the shuffle a bit with all the great bats in the Atlanta lineup. His 23 home runs rank fifth on the club.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Power surge continues Sunday

Ozuna went 1-for-3 with a walk and a solo home run in Sunday's win over the Brewers. He took Hoby Milner deep in the sixth inning to tie things up at 6-6, setting the stage for a game-winning Matt Olson homer in the eighth. Ozuna will be sorry to see Milwaukee leave town -- he had two doubles and four long balls during the three-game series to bust out of a July slump. On the season, the 32-year-old is slashing .236/.309/.479 with 22 home runs and 49 RBI in 87 contests.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Possible waiver wire pickups

Ozuna's season has been one of extreme highs and lows. First was the .085 (5 for 59) batting average in April. Then came the two-month stretch in which he hit .304 (59 for 194) with 15 home runs and a .943 OPS. Then, right about the point when we were all beginning to trust him, he endured a 14-game stretch in which he hit .082 (4 for 49). So who foresaw him hitting four home runs this weekend, driving in six runs while scoring seven? Not those in the 13 percent of leagues where he was dropped during his 14-game skid. It's been a roller coaster for sure, but given Ozuna's everyday spot in one of the best lineups in baseball, he deserves more patience than your league-mate showed him.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Slugs two longs balls Saturday

Ozuna went 3-for-4 with two home runs, a double, three total runs and four total RBI in Saturday's 11-5 win against the Brewers. Ozuna racked up 10 total bases in the contest, doubling home a run in the first inning, swatting a solo homer in the fifth and adding a two-run shot in the seventh. The veteran had been in a prolonged slump prior to the series against the Brewers, going 4-for-49 with just one long ball over his previous 14 games. However, he's broken out in the first two contests versus Milwaukee this weekend, going 5-for-8 with three homers, two doubles and five RBI.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Snaps slump Friday

Ozuna went 2-for-4 with a walk, a double, a solo home run and two additional runs scored in Friday's 10-7 win over the Brewers. The veteran slugger hadn't had a multi-hit performance since July 5, slashing a brutal .082/.132/.143 in the following 14 games with a 3:19 BB:K, but Ozuna appeared to find his stroke again Friday. Atlanta could pick up another bat at the trade deadline to work into the corner outfield/DH mix, but the streaky 32-year-old likely still has some job security after his rampage through May and June. On the season, Ozuna sports a .746 OPS with 19 homers and 44 RBI in 85 contests.

  • Braves' Marcell Ozuna: Extends hitting streak with homer

Ozuna went 1-for-4 with a solo home run in Monday's win over the Guardians. The veteran slugger drove a first-pitch fastball from Gavin Williams over the right-center field wall in the fourth inning. The solo shot extended Ozuna's hitting streak to 13 games, a stretch in which he's slashing .288/.351/.558 with four homers and 10 RBI. After stumbling out of the gate with a .397 OPS in April and looking like his roster spot could be in jeopardy, Ozuna has completely turned things around and delivered a .966 OPS since the beginning of May.
