  • Diamondbacks' Juan Centeno: Sent to minor-league camp

The Diamondbacks re-assigned Centeno to minor-league camp Friday. Centeno will provide the Diamondbacks with some backstop depth at the Triple-A level again in 2023. The 33-year-old slashed .305/.355/.512 with 15 homers over 91 games with Triple-A Reno and Double-A Amarillo in 2022.

  • Diamondbacks' Juan Centeno: Cut from big-league camp

The Diamondbacks reassigned Centeno to their minor-league camp Thursday. Centeno had been attending big-league camp as a non-roster invitee and was competing for a backup catcher role, but he was never likely to join Arizona for Opening Day while both Carson Kelly and Daulton Varsho are healthy.

  • Diamondbacks' Juan Centeno: Inks MiLB deal with Snakes

Centeno signed a one-year, minor-league contract with the Diamondbacks on Monday. Centeno's deal presumably includes an invitation to big-league spring training, but he'll most likely begin the 2022 campaign with Triple-A Reno in the likely event he doesn't break camp with the Diamondbacks. A 32-year-old journeyman catcher, Centeno has appeared in 118 career MLB games, slashing .223/.278/.323 over 371 plate appearances.

  • Red Sox's Juan Centeno: Joins player pool

Centeno (ankle) was added to the Red Sox's 60-man player pool. Centeno, who is not on the 40-man roster, suffered a sprained ankle during spring training and had only seven plate appearances in camp before the season was put on hold. There has not been an update on his condition since, but the assumption is that he'll be ready to compete when summer camp kicks off later this week. The 30-year-old catcher spent the 2019 season with the Red Sox organization, mostly at Triple-A Pawtucket, and was a September call-up. Boston has five catchers in its player pool but are expected to add Jonathan Lucroy, who along with Christian Vazquez and Kevin Plawecki are expected to be the top at the position.

  • Red Sox's Juan Centeno: Diagnosed with sprained ankle

Centeno suffered a sprained ankle during Saturday's spring training game against the Yankees, Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe reports. Centeno was able to walk off the field under his own power after injuring his ankle, and it appears as though he avoided a broken bone. The exact severity is unclear, but it wouldn't be surprising to see the catcher limited over the next few days in order to prevent a more severe injury.

  • Red Sox's Juan Centeno: Leaves with apparent ankle injury

Centeno left Saturday's spring training game against the Yankees after appearing to suffer a right ankle injury, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. Centeno appeared to suffer the injury after tripping on first base following an errant throw, and he walked off the field under his own power following the incident. The nature and the severity of the injury are not yet clear. The 30-year-old signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox during the offseason and appears unlikely to make the roster for Opening Day.

  • Red Sox's Juan Centeno: Signs with Red Sox

Centeno signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Thursday, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports. The deal includes an invitation to spring training. Centeno spent most of the 2019 season with Triple-A Pawtucket, appearing in 81 games and slashing .248/.321/.350. He also appeared in seven games for the Red Sox, going 2-for-15 with a pair of RBI. Centeno figures to serve as organizational catching depth.

  • Juan Centeno: Refuses outright assignment

Centeno became a free agent Monday after refusing an outright assignment to the minors. Centeno has settled into his role as a third catcher at this point in his career. He's received at least some big-league time in seven straight seasons, including seven games last year, but has only twice appeared in more than 10 games and has never appeared in more than 55. He'll likely be searching for a minor-league deal this winter.

  • Red Sox's Juan Centeno: Moves up to big club

The Red Sox selected Centeno's contract from Triple-A Pawtucket on Sunday. Centeno will provide Boston with a third option behind the plate, but he's not expected to see much usage in September. Top backstop Christian Vazquez will continue to see the overwhelming share of action at catcher while Boston remains in the hunt for a playoff spot.

  • Red Sox's Juan Centeno: Assigned to minors

The Red Sox assigned Centeno to their minor-league camp Saturday, Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe reports. The Red Sox have yet to decide on a backup at catcher behind No. 1 option Christian Vazquez, but Centeno wasn't really a factor in the job battle while attending camp as a non-roster invitee. Instead, the choice will come down to Sandy Leon or Blake Swihart; the latter is out of options.

  • Red Sox's Juan Centeno: Signs MiLB deal with Boston

Centeno signed a minor-league contract with the Red Sox on Tuesday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Centeno had a brief stint with the Rangers early in 2018 but spent the bulk of the season with Triple-A Round Rock, accruing a .234/.291/.307 slash line. Christian Vasquez, Sandy Leon and Blake Swihart are all under team control in 2019, likely leaving Centeno to provide catching depth should he remain in the organization through the season.

  • Rangers' Juan Centeno: Clears waivers

Centeno cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Round Rock on Monday. Centeno spent the start of the season as the Rangers' backup catcher but eventually lost the position to waiver claim Carlos Perez. His profile better fits that of a third catcher than a backup, as he's hit just .227/.278/.331 over parts of six seasons for five different teams. He'll slide back into that role for the Rangers and is unlikely to have much fantasy value even if an injury leaves an opening on the major-league roster.

  • Rangers' Juan Centeno: Stay in Texas coming to an end

Centeno is expected to be designated for assignment after the Rangers claimed catcher Carlos Perez, Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News reports. Rangers general manager Jon Daniels said it's unlikely the team would carry three catchers, but stopped short of saying there's a pending transaction involving Centeno, who is out of options. Perez is considered slightly better defensively than Centeno, but neither catcher has been much with a bat in hand. Perez was 3-for-21 for the Braves this year while Centeno is batting .162 with Texas.

  • Rangers' Juan Centeno: Makes fourth start

Centeno went 0-for-5 in Saturday's 6-5 extra-inning win over the Astros and is batting .176 (3-for-17) over four games. Centeno has played a quarter of the 16 games the Rangers have played, which prorates to 40 games for the season. He'll probably get more than that, but a career .614 OPS doesn't suggest he can help much if starter Robinson Chirinos goes down for any extended amount of time.

  • Rangers' Juan Centeno: Moving up depth chart

Centeno has the edge to become the backup catcher, Drew Davison of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. Centeno's status cleared up over the past week. Texas designated Brett Nicholas for assignment last week, then optioned Jose Trevino to Double-A Frisco on Monday. Centeno, who is hitting a robust-for-him .267 this spring, was the batterymate for staff ace Cole Hamels on Tuesday, a sign that he's the leading candidate to back up Robinson Chirinos. The Rangers' backup catching job is not insignificant as they plan to carefully manage the playing time of the 33-year-old Chirinos.

  • Astros' Juan Centeno: Outrighted from 40-man roster

Centeno was outrighted from the Astros' 40-man roster Wednesday, John Boyd of the Houston Chronicle reports. Centeno will head to waivers following a 2017 season which saw the catcher play in 22 games with the World Series-champion Astros. During those contests, he slashed .231/.286/.346 with two home runs and four RBI.

  • Astros' Juan Centeno: Cleared to work out

Centeno (concussion) was cleared for a pre-game workout Tuesday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. Centeno sustained a concussion during one of last Saturday's doubleheader games. Houston has plenty of catching options available, so there's no need to rush Centeno back to action.

  • Astros' Juan Centeno: Diagnosed with concussion

Manager A.J. Hinch reported Sunday that Centeno is dealing with a mild concussion, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. Centeno suffered the concussion when he was hit in the mask by a backswing during Saturday's game against the Athletics. His timeline for return has not been announced, but it wouldn't be surprising to see him held out of action for the next week or two, as the Astros have plenty of catching options available.

  • Astros' Juan Centeno: Exits with apparent injury

Centeno exited Saturday's game in the second inning after being hit in the mask by a backswing, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. Max Stassi came on to replace Centeno, who is being evaluated for a concussion. More should be known about his status following the conclusion of Saturday's game.

  • Astros' Juan Centeno: Sent back to minors

Centeno was optioned to Triple-A Fresno on Wednesday, Jake Kaplan of the Houston Chronicle reports. Brian McCann (knee) is expected to come of the disabled list Thursday, so Centeno will head back to Fresno to clear room. The 27-year-old went 6-for-27 (.222) in eight games during his most recent stint with the Astros. He'll continue to serve as organizational catching depth.
