Player Outlook
Charlie Blackmon missed two months of action around the middle of last season due to a fractured hand. He was reasonably productive when on the field and particularly so after returning from the injury, slashing .297/.386/.466 over his final 40 contests. That strong finish seemed to convince the Rockies to bring the 37-year-old back for one more season, as they inked him to a one-year extension in late September. With a .905 OPS at home versus just a .666 OPS on the road in 2023, Blackmon returning to Colorado was probably his only shot to retain mixed-league relevancy. Blackmon doesn't offer much power at this point in his career and he's basically a zero on the basepaths. However, he remains a good bet for average and would seem to be in line to bat leadoff again for the Rockies in 2024.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Expected to be primary DH

Blackmon is expected to serve as the Rockies' primary designated hitter in 2024, Patrick Saunders of the Denver Post reports. Blackmon signed a one-year, $13 million extension with the Rockies just before the close of the 2023 campaign. Given that financial commitment, he's expected to keep a significant role on the team. Blackmon has stated a desire to play regularly in right field, but manager Bud Black is prioritizing carefully managing the veteran's workload.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Signs one-year extension

The Rockies signed Blackmon to a one-year contract extension Friday, Patrick Saunders of The Denver Post reports. Blackmon had been scheduled to become a free agent this winter at age 37, but he'll stay in Colorado for what will be his 14th major-league season. He was selected by the Rockies in the second round of the 2008 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech and has tallied 1,688 career big-league hits, all in the purple and black. The new one-year deal carries a $13 million guarantee with another $2 million available in performance-based incentives, per Steve Adams of MLBTradeRumors.com.

Blackmon went 3-for-5 with a solo home run, two doubles, one additional RBI, one stolen base and two total runs scored in Thursday's 14-5 win over the Dodgers. Blackmon filled the box score in a productive effort that began with a leadoff blast in the first inning. He also provided an RBI double in the seventh to cap a four-run rally. The 37-year-old has hit .268 (22-for-82) in September, and his homer Thursday was his first of the month. He's up to eight long balls, 40 RBI, 56 runs scored, three steals, 24 doubles and a .283/.370/.451 slash line through 93 games this season.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Bound for bench

Blackmon will be on the bench for the first half of Saturday's doubleheader against the Giants, Patrick Lyons of TheDNVR.com reports. The veteran outfielder will unsurprisingly not be asked to start two games on one day. Hunter Goodman will handle right field in the afternoon game, but Blackmon could return to the lineup for the nightcap.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Possible waiver wire pickups

You might have assumed Blackmon had nothing left in the tank given his decline the past couple years and his lengthy absence for a fractured hand at age 37. But he's come off the IL to hit .395 (17 for 43) with two homers, two triples and a double in 12 games. Not all of that damage has come at home, but for the season, he's batting .307 with a .923 OPS there. It makes him an outfielder you can deploy situationally, if nothing else, though his high contact rate does broaden his appeal in points leagues. His 3.13 points per game rank up there with Randy Arozarena and Kyle Schwarber. It doesn't mean Blackmon should be rostered on the same level as those two, of course, but we can do better than 52 percent.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Homer, triple in loss

Blackmon went 2-for-4 with a solo home run, a triple and an additional run scored in Sunday's 10-5 loss to the White Sox. Both of his homers in that span have come in the last two games. The veteran is up to a .281/.367/.468 slash line with seven long balls, 31 RBI, 42 runs scored, 14 doubles and four triples through 62 contests this season. He's been atop the lineup in all five games he's started since his return, bumping Ezequiel Tovar to the No. 2 spot in the order.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Pops sixth homer

Blackmon went 2-for-5 with a two-run home run and two runs scored Saturday against the White Sox. Blackmon has a hit in each of his five starts since returning from a hand injury, and his long ball in the seventh inning was his second extra-base hit in that span. All five of those contests have taken place at Coors Field, though Blackmon has still successfully returned to the field following a two-month absence. He should continue to be a source of runs scored and a decent batting average down the stretch as he remains locked into the leadoff role in Colorado.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Hitting well since return

Blackmon went 1-for-3 with two walks, two runs scored and an RBI on Friday against the White Sox. Blackmon has at least one hit in all four games since returning from a hand injury, and he's reached base multiple times in each of his three starts. The Rockies have plenty of candidates for at-bats between designated hitter and the outfield, though Blackmon still looks to be in line for a consistent role and has occupied the leadoff spot upon his activation.

Blackmon went 2-for-3 with a walk and a run in Monday's 6-4 win over Arizona. Blackmon returned after a two-month absence necessitated by a fracture in his right hand. The veteran didn't show any signs of rust, reaching base three times from the leadoff spot. One of his hits was an infield single leading off the eighth inning that sparked a four-run frame in the come-from-behind victory. Blackmon began the game as the Rockies' designated hitter before moving into right field in the ninth. He'll likely work as the team's DH most games moving forward.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Resumes full activities

Blackmon (hand) turned in full workouts on the field Monday and Tuesday and could soon be cleared to begin a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. Blackmon, who has been on the injured list since June 11 with a fractured right hand, was expected to begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Albuquerque on Aug. 1, but the Rockies nixed those plans after the 37-year-old acknowledged that he was experiencing some lingering discomfort. The setback was considered a minor one, and Blackmon's ability to perform full baseball activities less than a week later suggests his rehab program is back on track. Expect the Rockies to provide an update on Blackmon's next steps within the next couple of days.

  • Rockies' Charlie Blackmon: Not ready for rehab games

Blackmon (hand) is no longer scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Tuesday with Triple-A Albuquerque, Thomas Harding of MLB.com reports. Blackmon did some pregame activities with the Rockies on Monday and apparently still felt some lingering discomfort in the right hand that he fractured back in June. The severity of the setback is not yet known, but it's safe to say there is no longer a set timetable for the veteran's return to the active major-league roster in Colorado.
