  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Opening year in utility role

Adrianza will begin the season as Atlanta's primary utility infielder. The decision to send both Vaughn Grissom and Braden Shewmake to Triple-A Gwinnett was in part prompted by the team's desire to have maximum middle infield depth, which means (eventually) adding Adrianza to the 40-man roster and keeping him on the big-league bench rather than letting him go. The 33-year-old switch hitter saw time at second base, third base, shortstop and left field in 2022, but his .470 OPS over 110 plate appearances between Atlanta and the Nationals -- the second time in the last three seasons he's posted a sub-.600 OPS -- doesn't exactly suggest he would have been hard to replace. If Orlando Arcia gets replaced as the starting shortstop by either Shewmake or Grissom, he would presumably take Adrianza's utility role and bump him to the waiver wire.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Back in Atlanta as NRI

Adrianza signed a minor-league contract with Atlanta on Friday, which includes an invitation to spring training, Justin Toscano of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports. Adrianza was a decent super utility guy for the team in 2021 and Atlanta wound up re-acquiring him at the 2022 trade deadline from the Nationals. It seems manager Brian Snitker has an affinity for the 33-year-old, although Atlanta will hope it doesn't have to use him too much in 2023.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Activated by Atlanta

Adrianza (quadriceps) was reinstated from the 10-day injured list Saturday. Adrianza missed the last week and a half due to a left quadriceps strain but will rejoin Atlanta after a minimal stay on the injured list. He's unlikely to see significant playing time as a utility man now that he's healthy.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Placed on injured list

Adrianza was placed on the 10-day injured list with a left quadriceps strain Friday. Adrianza returned from the injured list in late August but saw minimal playing time while serving as a utility man over the last few weeks. He's dealing with a quad issue that will keep him out for at least a week and a half, and it's possible that he won't have a spot on Atlanta's active roster once he's fully healthy after Ozzie Albies (foot) was reinstated from the 60-day injured list Friday.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Comes off IL

Atlanta reinstated Adrianza (illness) from the 10-day injured list Monday. The club designated infielder Ryan Goins for assignment to clear room on the active roster for Adrianza, who should step back in as Atlanta's top utility infielder. The role is unlikely to translate to steady playing time for Adrianza, who is expected to play sparingly while Atlanta leans heavily on the likes of Dansby Swanson, Vaughn Grissom and Austin Riley in the infield as the team aims to chase down the Mets for the National League East crown.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Ready for rehab assignment

Adrianza (illness) is scheduled to begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Gwinnett. Since Adrianza has been on the IL for less than a week, he likely won't need more than one or two games in the minors to get comfortable at the plate and in the field. Adrianza will be eligible for activation Saturday and should replace Ryan Goins as Atlanta's top utility man once he rejoins the roster.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Transferred to 10-day IL

Adrianza was transferred from the COVID-19 injured list to the 10-day injured list due to a viral infection Monday, retroactive to Aug. 12. Adrianza landed on the COVID-19 IL last week but will be forced to miss at least a week and a half after being diagnosed with a viral infection. Since the move was backdated, he'll be eligible to return as early as Aug. 22.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Lands on injured list

Adrianza was placed on the injured list for an undisclosed reason Friday. The likely explanation is placement on the COVID-19 IL. Assuming that's the case, Adrianza will be eligible to return as soon as he clears the league's health and safety protocols, but his absence will leave Atlanta very short-handed at second base behind Vaughn Grissom. Guillermo Heredia was called up to take Adrianza's place on the active roster.

  • Braves' Ehire Adrianza: Dealt to Atlanta

Atlanta acquired Adrianza from Washington on Monday in exchange for minor-league outfielder Trey Harris. The veteran utility man will be beginning his second stint in Atlanta, with whom he joined during the club's 2021 World Series-winning season. Just like a season ago, Atlanta presumably envisions Adrianza serving as a backup at three spots in the infield as well as the two corner-outfield spots, but his opportunities to start will be few and far between while the team is at optimal health. After missing the beginning of the season with a quadriceps injury, Adrianza debuted for Washington in early June and slashed .179/.255/.202 across 94 plate appearances prior to being traded. Atlanta designated second baseman Robinson Cano for assignment to clear room on the 40-man roster and 26-man active roster for Adrianza.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Sits after four straight starts

Adrianza is out of the lineup for Thursday's game against the Phillies, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Adrianza had started in each of the last four games, though he's expected to fade into more of a part-time role moving forward since Nelson Cruz's (illness) return from a two-game absence will no longer leave an extra lineup spot available. Maikel Franco, who made one start as the Nationals' designated hitter while Cruz was out, will be back in the lineup at third base Thursday.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Picks up start in outfield

Adrianza will start in left field and bat eighth in Tuesday's game against the Phillies. He'll stick in the lineup for the third game in a row, with all of his starts coming at different positions. Adrianza, who went 1-for-3 with a walk, a stolen base and a run in Monday's 3-2 loss, will be replacing Yadiel Hernandez in the outfield Tuesday.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Reinstated from IL

Adrianza (quadriceps) was activated from the 60-day injured list Tuesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Adrianza was reinstated from the 60-day injured list following a quadriceps injury he suffered in late March. He will return to the major-league roster Tuesday after completing a two-week rehab assignment with Double-A Harrisburg and Triple-A Rochester. Lucius Fox was optioned to Rochester in a corresponding move Tuesday. Adrianza is set for his debut after he signed a one-year contract with the Nationals this past offseason following a 2021 season in which he batted .247 with five homers, 28 RBI and 32 runs in 109 games with the Braves.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Rehab moves to Triple-A

Adrianza (quadriceps) had his rehab assignment transferred to Triple-A Rochester on Monday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Adrianza has been out all season after straining his left quadriceps in late March. He owns a 1.238 OPS through six rehab games, so he may not need many more to demonstrate that he's ready to return to the active roster.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Kicking off rehab assignment

Adrianza (quadriceps) will begin a rehab assignment at Double-A Harrisburg on Tuesday, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Since Adrianza was moved to the 60-day injured list in late April and won't be eligible to join the Nationals until early June, he'll likely remain on his rehab assignment for the next two weeks, with a move to Triple-A Rochester expected to come at some point. For now, Adrianza will start out at Harrisburg, where he'll be able to pick up regular at-bats and prove he's recovered from the left quad strain by playing multiple spots in the field. Once he's cleared to return from the 60-day IL, Adrianza will likely displace Dee Strange-Gordon as the Nationals' top utility man.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Plays in simulated game

Adrianza (quadriceps) played seven innings in a simulated game this week, Jesse Dougherty of The Washington Post reports. Adrianza has been out all season while recovering from a strained left quadriceps. While he's yet to play in an official game, his work in the simulated game represents a significant step. He could be ready for a rehab assignment soon, though exactly when that will happen is not yet clear.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Begins running on treadmill

Adrianza (quadriceps) was cleared to begin running on an anti-gravity treadmill Wednesday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The activity marks a small step forward for Adrianza, who has been on the shelf since suffering a left quad strain in a March 31 Grapefruit League game. The Nationals moved him to the 60-day injured list a couple weeks ago, so Adrianza will be on the shelf until at least early June while he recovers from the injury. A clearer target date for Adrianza's 2022 debut with the Nationals likely won't emerge until he advances to a minor-league rehab assignment.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Transferred to 60-day IL

Adrianza (quadriceps) was transferred to the 60-day injured list Thursday, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. Ehire strained his left quadriceps in late March and hasn't made much progress in his rehab, as he's yet to resume running or baseball activities. His return timeline is still not entirely clear, but he'll now be ineligible to return before early June. Erasmo Ramirez had his contract selected to take Adrianza's place on the 40-man roster.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Rehab progressing slowly

Adrianza (quadriceps) has yet to resume any running workouts or baseball activities since straining his left quadriceps tendon in a March 31 Grapefruit League game, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The Nationals were initially hopeful that the quad strain would result in a brief stint on the 10-day injured list for Adrianza to begin the season, but three weeks after suffering the injury, the 32-year-old doesn't appear close to a return. Since he hasn't been able to do even light activities, Adrianza is likely at least two weeks away from being ready to play in a game. Adrianza's ongoing absence should allow Lucius Fox to stick around with the big club as a utility infielder.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Not yet running

Nationals manager Dave Martinez said Adrianza (quadriceps), who was placed on the 10-day injured list Thursday, has yet to start a running program, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The skipper noted that until Adrianza is able to start running again during his rehab program at extended spring training, the Nationals won't have a clear target date for his return from a left quad strain. Adrianza's absence to begin the season allowed Lucius Fox to secure a spot on the Nationals' Opening Day roster as a reserve infielder.

  • Nationals' Ehire Adrianza: Beginning season on IL

Adrianza (quadriceps) will open the season on the 10-day injured list, Mark Zuckerman of MASNSports.com reports. The 32-year-old suffered a quadriceps strain March 31 and it now appears it will keep him out of commission for the first couple series of the 2022 campaign. When healthy, Adrianza will likely operate as super-utility option in the infield off the bench for the Nationals this season. He will look to build upon his .247 batting average and 14 extra-base hits from 2021.
