Former Cubs pitcher Kerry Wood  is likely to return to the team as an on-field instructor, according to the Chicago Sun Times’ Toni Ginnetti.

It’s unclear exactly what role Wood would play next season, but he would like to be in uniform. Wood was drafted in the first round by the Cubs in 1995. He played his first 10 seasons with the team before making brief stints with Cleveland and the New York Yankees. He returned to the Cubs in 2011, and struck out the last batter he faced before retiring earlier this season.

Wood also stressed that the Cubs should attempt to bring back more former players as instructors. He specifically mentioned, Greg Maddux, Mark Grace, Sammy Sosa and Ryne Sandberg as guys he would want to return to the team.
