The Angels have recalled reliever David Carpenter and optioned starter Garrett Richards to Triple-A Salt Lake, Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com reported Thursday.

With Zack Greinke added in a trade, the Angels no longer need Richards -- one of their top-five prospects -- as their fifth starter. Instead, they opted to add relief depth with Carpenter, who has a 107 ERA+ in 38 innings with the Angels this year.

Richards posted a 4.33 ERA in nine starts with the Angels, striking out 34 against 27 walks.
