Update: The Mets have claimed Shoppach from Boston, the team announced. The Red Sox will receive a player to be named later for Shoppach.

Shoppach did not pass through waivers unclaimed, as previously reported.

The Red Sox would like to commit to catcher Ryan Lavarnway but would need to deal either Shoppach or Jarrod Saltalamacchia to make room for him. Once David Ortiz returns from a heel injury, Lavarnway is the most likely candidate to be sent to the minors. By trading Shoppach, the team can keep Lavarnway in the majors once Ortiz returns.

The team considered dealing Shoppach at the trade deadline but couldn’t find the right deal. The 32-year-old Shoppach has hit .250/.327/.471 in 140 at-bats with Boston this season. Shoppach is set to become a free agent at the end of the season.
