It was announced on Monday that Matt Garza had a "stress reaction" in the back of his right elbow and that he's been shut down indefinitely. While it's unknown whether Garza will pitch again this season, Cubs general manager Jed Hoyer said that Garza "is likely to be a member of the team in 2013," reported Paul Sullivan in the Chicago Tribune.
Hoyer also said:
"And we're excited to have him. (Trading him) is the last thing we're thinking of. We're just trying to get this guy healthy."
Garza is earning $9.5 million this season and is arbitration-eligible after the season. He could hit free agency after the 2013 season.
Garza's name was heard often in trade rumors before the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline, but elbow issues took him off the market. He's 5-7 with a 3.91 ERA and 1.18 WHIP. He's struck out 96 batters in 103.2 innings this year.
