Brian Wilson

It's not a surprise, but it's official: Giants closer Brian Wilson will undergo Tommy John surgery.

Hank Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle reports that Wilson, as expected, has been diagnosed with a sprain of the medial collateral ligament and on Thursday will be operated on by Dr. James Andrews. Obviously, Wilson will miss the remainder of the 2012 season at the very least.

Wilson previously underwent reconstructive elbow surgery back in 2003 while at LSU. He'll soon join a short list of two-time TJ recipients -- a list that also includes Joakim Soria of the Royals, who received his bad news earlier this month.

As for the Giants, the good news is that they have no shortage of able replacements. For now, it appears that Santiago Casilla will get the majority of the save opps.
