The Angels may be playing with a new shortstop for a spell ... but it's got nothing to do with next week's trade deadline.

Erick Aybar banged a foul ball off of his right big toe on Saturday and is out indefinitely. Maicer Izturis was in the lineup against the Royals in Monday night's series opener, and Jean Segura, one of the Angels' top position-player prospects, was summoned from Double-A Arkansas on Sunday.

X-rays revealed a "line" in his toe, which is believed to be a crack. But the Angels are waiting on orthopedic specialist Lew Yocum to read them and deliver his verdict. Manager Mike Scioscia said before Monday's game that Aybar could be out anywhere from "two days to two weeks."

He said it's too early to say whether Aybar, who is hitting .324 over his past 34 games following a very slow start, will need to be placed on the disabled list.

"We're going to go by how he feels," said Scioscia, who noted that the club has enough "infield coverage" with Izturis and Segura, fresh pitchers and a day off on Thursday, all of which means the Angels don't have to be rushed into a decision with Aybar.
